Sensation
In just a year, Tommy declares himself a "sensation" and begins to have a profound impact on people whenever he nears them, including motorcycle gangs (played by The Black Angels Of The North East Coast) and slot-machine gambling Teddy Boys. Flying above them in a hang-glider, Tommy's mere presence converts them and many others to a new life according to his beliefs, as opposed to their previous wicked ways.

I wish Roger would’ve sang this on the original Tommy album. It’s coming from the point of ‘Tommy’ and also, his voice is so darn good on this song. He absolutely kills it! It’s great to have both versions I suppose.

Yeah this is a consequence of the confused nature of the original album's development--initially it was decided that Townshend would sing the songs sung from Tommy's POV (hence him singing "Sensation" and the "See Me, Feel Me" portion of "Go To the Mirror") but then it shifted towards Daltrey singing Tommy's POV as well as Mrs. Walker's; so the final album ends up pretty confused, and live performances depend more on who needs a vocal break for a given song

The glider in this clip is a Birdman Hawk, and the real flier is the Birdman test and development pilot Dave Raymond. The takeoff from the tower was actually very dodgy, as he had to go when it suited the needs of the director, Ken Russell, and not the needs of the pilot! Ken was interested in the light, and visual attractiveness of the shot, not the wind speed and direction... Hence the glider diving quite a bit on takeoff. Afterwards, this glider - signed on the leading edge by Daltrey - ended up in Scotland, where I flew it a few times...

I'm 53 and watched a lot of movies from The 30s to The 70s. I was at a drive-in in 1975 that had two screens. I was promised to see "Tommy" but my sister and brother-in-law opted for "Walking Tall : Part 2". I finally saw Tommy in 1981 at a drive-in twice. Both times with "Heavy Metal".

@WinChun78
@WinChun78 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Teds or Teddy Boys were the 50's types. similar to greasers in America. There were still a lot around even in the 1970's. The original rockers that we had here in the 50's/early 60's here, rode British motorbikes and were probably more similar to American greasers in style though.
@kencoakley3959

Teddy Boys were very tough guys. They loved to administer beatings. I was rather impressed with the way the Teddy Boys were dancing like that. The one that was on his hands and feet and flipped over looked like he was inventing break dancing. I was a greaser punk 20 years ago and my American friends said that looked like a Teddy Boy but I hadn't adopted the Edwardian style of dress.

Hells Angel type patch clubs used to fight each other and rip off each others colours, back in those days. Went on a lot. Nothing to do with mods and rockers, there's not a mod in sight, and these were patch club bikers rather than the ton up boy rockers of the 1960's...
