The Bells Go Down (1943) told the story of firefighters during the war, including James Mason, Tommy Trinder and Philip Friend. In the memorable climax, the brigade are called to a hospital bombed during a raid, only for Fire Chief Finlay Currie to be caught in the building when it collapses. Tommy's character goes up in place of James Mason to rescue him, but upon finding Currie the floor gives way and they find themselves trapped. I remember seeing this as a kid and this scene has always stayed with me, especially when Tommy offers Finlay a cigarette, knowing there is little hope for them. It still has the power to move now, which is why I've uploaded it to KZfaq, as the film is so rarely repeated on TV.
