In the 1980s when I lived in Ottawa, Canada, I subscribed to the New Yorker so I would know from the On the Town section when Tommy Flanagan was playing in the Apple. I would then take the Greyhound bus to NYC (a 6 or 7 hr trip each way) and walk to the Village from the Port Authority, where, having a return bus ticket, I could sleep after the gig in the cheapest digs in the City (free). With most jazz musicians, it's always, "Here's so-and-so playing such-and-such a tune." With Flanagan it's always, "Here's such-and-such a tune, played by Tommy Flanagan." Still, in a blindfold test, he was instantly recognizable by his exquisite touch, and the inner voicings of his chords.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and working w/ Tommy Flanagan on "TALMAGE FARLOW", my documentary film about the jazz guitarist, Tal Farlow. Tommy brought so much to the trio Tal formed for the film, which also included Red Mitchell on bass. A formative and totally memorable experience for me, then a first-time filmmaker. RIP Tommy. Your music & the memories I and so many others have of you & Diana live on... Lorenzo DeStefano

Tal and Tommy sounded great together. Their album "Chromatic Palette" was a highlight of Tal's later years. I would have loved to have been in the room with those two and Red, spending the afternoon listening to music making at that level in such an intimate setting. Great film. Seeing it on PBS in 1987 is pretty much what got me listening to jazz as a 15 year old. Suddenly Rush and Led Zeppelin weren't the whole universe to me, and a couple of months later I was listening to Miles and Coltrane and headed towards Ellington and all the rest.

Tommy Flanagan was the first piano player I started listening to when I started listening to Jazz 26 years ago. I never get tired of his music, delicate, elegant classy. Bop with a very lyrical but personal touch. His trio albums are masterpieces (on Enja Records) + Jazz Poet on Timeless Records are really 'must haves' for any Tommy Flanagan fan.

Pure poetry and a supremely effortless touch. When I was living or playing in NYC between 1991-1998 I would try to hear Mr. Flanagan as much as possible; for some reason I'd also see him out and about around Manhattan quite frequently, saying, "God bless you, Mr. Flanagan" and getting a polite nod and wave in return. His album, "Together," with Kenny Barron, is still at the pinnacle of duo piano artistry.

Rather, "THANK YOU"! This glorious concert, for one great example, is PURE GOLD, nothing less!
I heard and met Tommy several times in Detroit (Baker's Keyboard Lounge) and Chicago in the 80s and 90s. I have learned so much from him. His solo on "Blue Bossa" is a master class. Someone once said that his solos are so beautiful and logical that they seem to have been written out beforehand.

AND HAVING HAD THE NERVE AND AUDACITY OF CALLING MYSELF A JAZZ VOCALIST FOR SO MANY YEARS!!!!!!!
