No one does it better. I remember visiting my friend in Copenhagen, coming from Iceland, christmas 1986 and buying this record there. I was 19 then and I still love it today at almost 56 (in few weeks).

I absolutely concur with you. his performance of Endgame from Chess is also breathtaking, especially when you hear his very last note when he jumps from F to the high Bb, it is thrilling. no one else does that in any performance I have ever heard. Outstanding!!!!

@@rateit1474 I most certainly know of Tommy Johansson! I'm a big fan and a subscriber since the early days of his channel. He's absolutely frigging amazing in every aspect. He's a jack of all trades and super talented in everything he does. Especially in singing and above all playing guitar! I just can't understand how he manages to be so productive as he is, since he's fully commited to Sabaton as well! Tommy is a beast! But remember, I wrote that Tommy Körberg is the best Swedish singer of HIS GENERATION! As for other younger male Swedish singers I absolutely love Erik Grönwall as well. I'm a member on his KZfaq channel and he's an absolutely wonderful human being except from being one of the best metal singers in the world right now. Thanks for the clarification. I just use to put Tommy Johanssons name out there since many, even Swedish ppl, doesn't know about him. Tommy Körberg is amazing too. I have him as third best singer in Sweden ever. Tommy Johansson second and Jussi Björling comes first.

Anthem is, imo, one of the best pieces of musical work ever created. It is a perfect build of vocals, instruments, tempo and production. It is a tricky song that a good singer can do amazing things with. I've heard all the others, from Bell to Groban to Ramin to others, and they all do amazing with the song. But this is Tommy's baby. This is his bag. Same with Murray Head doing Heaven on Their Minds or Odem doing Wait for It. It's their song. Everyone else just covers it.

steven rochelle Disagree strongly, Grobans version is dull, lackluster and lifeless compared to the original. Just saw him sing it on the tonight show and there's just no comparison, his version is allmost completly void of passion and feel for the piece.

Sunedosa, well in the musical Josh's voice is stronger way more powerful and if it is lifeless as you said , chech out Josh's neck on the last note, he is giving everything, unlike your inept mr korbergs version where I had to put my speakers on full power just to hear him. Jesus you really have a hardon for Josh groban haven't you ? I'm not talking about this specific version, this is 20 years after this song was written with Korberg in mind. Of course Korberg who is allmost 60 here will not have the same power as he had in his late 30*s. And to be honest, your attitude makes you just an idiot, not even a friendly one. I've seen you post the same crap in tons of Korberg videos, trying to belittle people on your white knight Groban mission but i don't think you could be less of a cunt even if you tried..

An honour to sing this anthem, and in line of many with gøød intentions.... we all fall short, there has always been songs for people like Tommy and Jussi (Björling), near exclusively. Leave them be, sing wirh them, but never challenge their talent, they are untouchables👌

I saw Tommy K perform this in London about a year after the premier I believe. The first professional stage production I ever saw. Literally changed the musical course of my life. After this, only the highest quality in any genre would do. I am blessed.

Just listened to Philip Quast, Josh Groban, and Michael Ball versions of this song, and Tommy Korberg just seems to caress, phrase, and sing this song better. I'm ashamed to say that I hadn't heard him sing before. Beautiful version.

I definitely agree with you there. I love Josh Groban and I think he did well singing Anthem, but Josh's version was done a bit too heavily. I think there was too much anguish. This rendition is just perfect. Some anguish there, but more pride and love.

I will never forget being present at the exciting moment Chess opened in London and heard Tommy Korberg sang this sung and I fell in love with it at once. The song is beautiful and I have heard many fine interpretations and loved them all. Who performs it best is subjective it is the music and lyrics that are the real beauty.

This is simply brilliant. I love the end where he goes in with all his passion and power. Whish I'd discovered him earlier and got the chance to see him live in his prime. To a certain extent, I think his voice have gained power and depth with the years.

For me he is the the one and only unbeaten Russian through all these years since 1985. Thumbs up with the three Knights who had casted him for the concept album of CHESS. Tommy was, is and will be the incredible master of this incredible masterpiece in musical songs !!!!

This is a beautiful song. The first time I saw the musical "Chess" I was in college, and attended with a Lithuanian friend of mine. We were both deeply moved by the song, it moved her to tears. Though the lyrics are written about the Russians, it could also have been written for the Baltic states that were annexed by the Soviets. After the fall of the Soviet Union, I had a chance to visit Lithuania during the freedom festivals that celebrated Lithuania's separation from the Soviet Union. Words can't describe the nationalistic pride they felt as they raised their own flag again, and were once again able to speak Lithuanian in public.

Wilkerson owns Valjean, Crawford owns The Phantom, and Tommy Korberg will forever own Anatoly Sergievsky. Other people play the part and sing the songs but Korberg actually appears to become the part. The depth of emotion he brings with each rendering leaves all the others standing at the gate. While I've learned to enjoy other versions Chess, nothing will ever equal the original cast and recording. I even get goose bumps when he sings it in Swedish!

Indeed he does. Then again it was written by Björn&Benny together with Tommy for him to utilize his voice in the best way possible so he should "own" it. But it definitely is an immense performance and, in my (not always so) humble opinion, anyone that claims that anybody else even sings it in the same league as Tommy is surely a fool. =) While others have made absolutely brilliant renditions of this song I just can't enjoy them because I can't help but measure them to this and they will always fall short.

I believe the two men who composed the composition had him in mind. This is his song .The man is the song.

Härligt, en man som kan sjunga allt...och som jämt överaskar... Härligt. En man som kan sjunga allt , och som har en känsla för för takt och ton :) "Anthem" kommer nog alltid betyda mycket för mig gällande musikaliska förebilder, och inte minst Tommy. Jag har lyssnat och sett på denna man sen jag var mindre, på konserter, på teve och i radio.

It is often said that the original is always the best and in this case, that is definately true. NO ONE will ever sing this song as amazing as Tommy does, Josh Groban did it very well. no doubt, but Tommy is still the man
