This is the most important question humanity is yet to answer, ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?
If we're being statistical, there's no chance that we are the only life outside of our planet, but how can we know for certain?
The Great Silence and the Fermi Paradox try to answer the question of why we haven't found any aliens or extraterrestrial life.
Are the aliens hiding from us? Are we too primitive to contact them? How have they not found us even though we have been relaying radio signals for years now? How have we not found them even though there's so many habitable planets?
Who knows and let's be honest no one will know for a long time, until we have some sort of sign that can finally confirm the biggest question all of humanity has.
Humans have been always looking to the skies, searching for something bigger than ourselves, yet the only God we have found so far is ourselves.
Maybe we are actually alone, maybe we will be first ones to venture out into space and help out other life such as ours that's looking at the sky hoping that it's not alone.
There's a lack of obvious evidence for extraterrestrial life, but there's such high estimates for their existence.
This is the question of the Fermi Paradox and the Great Silence.

@@LA-dd3pnYeah I suppose you're right in that sense. It's just that most of the things we do aren't shown very explicitly in a conceptual way, so we understand what we learn through equations, and although as a math major I'm quite intrigued by this part of my study, I would also appreciate a more philosophical or conceptual understanding being presented which we don't often get. It's just weird to me that when I watch people reacting to videos like this, especially Tommy, I'm like "damn, I never actually thought about it that way but yeah, now I see it", in that I actually realize what I've been learning at uni in a more wholistic way.

@@april-gb5mm As a Psych student, I learned that knowledge is a limitation: the more you know, the less you will create/imagine. Fuck that shit about alienation and stuff, it doenst have to do with that. It's more about getting so focused on something that you lose all the creative and random ways to think about that same topic. If you are studying Maths, I recommend you getting some other thing not related to Maths. That way, your brain will feel more free and you can even find a hidden connection between Maths and your new hobby.

Tommy I think the scariest thing about the Fermi paradox is the dark forest theory ( see kurzeghast video for more detail), the theory goes that the reason there are no aliens or no detectable signs of them is because they are dead or hiding, the reason for either is that they may be wiping out each other out of fears that rapid technological advance may lead to there end if a alien civilization gets a leg up in technology, so they wipe each other out of fear that if they left other aliens alone there tech could reach a point where they can be defeat by them, and the weaker ones are remaining radio silent to avoid getting spanked by the advanced civilizations.

19:12 Yes, there is the simulation theory, an unlikely, yet still technically Possible solution of Femi Paradox, (which is like 5/10 in level of Scariness) and then there is the more probable Cosmic Dark Forest Solution to the Fermi Paradox... It's probably the most goosebump inducing, ass-puckering of all theories, that states that perhaps, Intelligent Life exists in Abandance throughout the Universe but they are smart enough to stay quiet and hide from the myriad of Horrors that actually exist in the cosmos and the unsaid rule for life in the Universe is that they are both prey and predator. The idea that the Universe is actually a Shogun 2 campaign and every other player is out to Destroy and consume you and will do so, as soon as they figure out the Pathfinding.

We're alone in the sense that there are very few, if any, civilizations roughly equivalent to our own, in this galaxy, and very few in any other galaxies, as well. We are not alone in the sense that there is probably at least simple life on a number of worlds in our galaxy. . The universe isn't really old enough to have many civilizations like ours. Only Population 1 stars can have life-bearing worlds, as any of the other two types don't have anywhere near sufficient quantities of the necessary elements to form habitable planets. They also won't have planets with magnetic fields, because they cant have a core of the correct composition to generate one under any circumstances. . Among Population 1 stars, ours is actually a relatively "early bloomer", with the vast majority of them being a good billion or two years younger. . Like it or not, all those references to the "first ones" or "ancients" that you see in Sci-fi...that's us. We're the first. Hence...the apparent Fermi Paradox...which isn't one, they just didn't understand what was going on.

Bruh, in the last part of video, Tommy literally told the story of foundation of Rus', when some "aliens" (Vikings) and local finns, slavs and others followed them.

With all due respect my kin of the universe, and I mean the utmost respect, I and presumably a majority of us would like to see, how can I put it without sounding rude, definite evidence of other life besides of those on Earth. I am, of course, not trying to say God is not real or can’t be proven to exist. Let me put it like this, we would love to see more of God’s work beyond our little home in the galaxy. The Milky Way consist of billions of planets, and presumably a couple of those could sustain life, be they single or multicellular; intelligent or not.

Biggest question isn't if we are alone or not, since it's trivial if we indeed are alone. The biggest question is what do we do if we aren't alone.

btw Contact, while a great movie, in reality if aliens were somewhere outside our solar system, they wouldn't be able to decrypt or reflect / detect our radio signals as accurately as they do in the movie. Because they fade overtime, yeah they'll get interference though but that is very hard to time.
