This is one of most asked questions. How to play blues phrase? Not all about scale shapes but more about playing good rhythmic melodies over blues chord progression. I made a few good examples around those popular blues melodies. I also made a bad example! Hope you enjoy this!
Intro 00:00
Bad concept with scale shapes 02:54
Milt Jackson's Bag's Groove Melody 03:23
Walking Bassline & Singing Melody 05:35
Count Basie's C Jam Blues Melody 07:38
My Blues Melody 08:18
Shuffle Bassline & Singing Melody 10:15
Important bad example 12:35
Good Example 13:28

Tomo’s book and videos are the best resource that really train my ears, I have a lot of courses but they ignore the basics. I love how practicing shell chords and rhythm guitar, triads really allow me hear the chord change and play the melody. And I play much cleaner than I used to. Just trust Tomo, do the basic things everyday, 1-2 years your musicality will greatly improve.

Thank you so much! So happy to hear that. The foundation is the key! Easy to just show what they are... but you cannot apply things to music. Simplicity & Limitation ... I love! Please join my Guitar Wisdom. I teach a lot more details on those lessons. Yes! One year of a lot of efforts will change a lot!

大変楽しい講義ありがとうございます。ES-335いいですね。1979年群馬県からバークリー音楽院に行ったEさんにアメリカでレスポール買ってくれるか聴いたら、送ってくれたのがES-335でした。STRATが450ドル、レスポールが600ドルくらいだよ。と教えてくれて、レスポールが欲しかったのですが、送られてきたのは古いケースに入ったES-335でした。後年1963年のES-335だと分かりました。ボストンから送られてきました。

Hey Tomo, I often also comment on your Facebook and appreciate your responses. I recently started doing jazz jam sessions in Osaka. I played fly me to the moon, Alice in wonderland and all of me in a gypsy jazz style. My question is, what are some blues that I must know for jamm sessions, not only in Japan but, immediately as a musician I should know aside from Bblues and Fblues. Any songs with a strong melody in mind?
@TomoFujitaMusic

Thank you so much! First learn songs with R 3 7 chords then go through with triads so you can hear those chord changes. For jam, must know "Back at the Chicken Shack in F" " Blue Monk in F " " Straight No Chaser in F " "Billies Bounce in F " " Tenor Madness in Bb "

@@TomoFujitaMusic I have a 1969 ES335 that I use EXL115’s on. I have tried .010’s but they just sound too floppy. Maybe the extra length due to the trapeze tailpiece on your 335 makes the difference. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Yours sounds great!

Each guitar is totally different & different set up makes different feel. Maybe you set your string height is a little lower? You can try this set www.daddario.com/products/guitar/electric-guitar/xl-nickel/exl110-nickel-wound-regular-light-plus-10.5-48/

I remember hearing that in Japanese culture they count on their fingers by curling them up starting on the pinky. Westerners open them up starting on the index finger. Interestingly, native Americans including in South America do it the Asian way, providing evidence of immigration over the land bridge...at least that's what I was told! Oh and inspiring lesson, a lot to listen to and take in!

My first Gibson ES-335... I stared working delivering newspaper (back in KYOTO JAPAN) at my age 13 to 16. Each month I made about 30000 to 35000 yen (= A little over $200) so I paid my musical instrument from that job for 4 years. I have worked for 4 years (newspaper route job).

I like how you use melody whit your phrases, but I think a lot of people enjoy a guitar sound with more vibrato on notes and also exaggerated bends . And also the bending of chords, not full chords half chords , two note chords. It’s closer sounding to the voice to hear notes stretch to the next. Just hitting most of your notes with no vibrato or bends, kinda sounds like playing a keyboard , that doesn’t sound as good as an actual keyboard.

You can add more spices later. This example is more toward "practicing" than "Performance" Once people learn foundation of phrasing then adding more vibrato expression is good! Thank you!

Hi Tomo, could you do something about the way you record your voice, make it more crisp or something? With all respect to english not being your mother tongue/language, you have a tendency to mumble (a little), it makes your talking kind of hard to follow. Groeten from Almen Netherlands!

Blues phrase with a minor pentatonic / blues scale and a little more chord tone M3, b7...then I can add 9th & 6th etc. I never think about "Mixolydian" scale shape etc. I think more blues language that came from old records. You can analyze any notes that you are interested in.

@@williampimblott8373 I disagree, you could have put it simpler in that short lesson. By the way , I do think that you're talented . Playing the guitar well and teaching is a whole lot of difference .
