I was in a rut , but decided to finally get guitar wisdom last week after realizing that your videos were responsible for the few improvements I was making. Most of the time my brain shuts off after 3 min of theory. Now im practicing major scale and triads and i think something started to click. its hard but going slow and repeating everything out loud really helps. Cant wait to see where I am this time next year. Thanks !!

Guitar ruts are a true and real issue in our lives. It can definitely hurt when you don't feel like you're improving. I tend to be very gentle in my own improvement so that I can compare myself to yesterday.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe similar ways in our lives too. Yes. First, always. Don't worry! Don't compare! Don't expect too fast, Be kind to yourself. I wish everyone know that each person is so special before anything (playing guitar!) So nothing to less about at first. Guitar can be fun and can be frustrated because too many choices & no specific guidance (details) then could learn wrong ways easily without any pain. But later, get bad feeling inside.

I always want to say thank you for this video, Mr. Fujita. I always come back to this video because I feel like my guitar skills are deteriorating since pandemic until now since I dealt with my personal issue every time I want to improve again like I used to be. So actually I have my issue on my guitar playing that I am sloppy and always creating unwanted noise, because I cannot get my left hand straight and I had it since I was born 😅so I cannot do barre chords properly and do power chord position for my chords playing. And I hope the number one problem can help me with that especially to strengthen my pinky finger to mitigate the noises. Thankfully, the word "Don't worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast, be kind to yourself" really encourage me to keep practicing for better. Once again, thank you, Mr. Fujita 🙏

Thanks Tomo, I’m 60 and have only been playing seriously for about 2 years. I have a musical background, I started on trumpet in 1970 and by high school I had added French Horn, tuba and bass guitar. In the 1980’s I was a drummer in a couple of local bands. Then life got busy with family and jobs, so I didn’t play for years. Very glad I found you channel, you remind me to enjoy the journey and have fun with music.

Being self thought (before youtube was a thing) was detrimental to me for many years, picked up my share of bad habits. That wasn't to say I was a bad player, it just made more work for my hands, thus making everything that bit harder and my ability seemed to be stuck at that level. So I took it upon myself to relearn, almost from scratch, the very basics of practicing and technique and forget all the habits I had built up over years. Still have a few I'm working on but since doing stuff the right way, my skill has risen considerably compared to what it was and thats with many thanks to great teachers like Tomo and the many others on this platform. I also highly suggest guitar lessons if you have a reputable local teacher. It's invaluable and wish I had been able to do so starting out.

When I was growing up before I picked up the guitar, I was taking trumpet lessons for a while and my teacher use to tell me, if you're getting frustrated and find yourself in rut, put the instrument down and back away from it for a moment. Collect yourself and come back to it. I guess his philosophy was that if you're in rut but continue to force it, you'll only end up in even more of a rut. I find myself still applying this philosophy to guitar. Sometimes in order to get out of a rut, I need to back away from the guitar and refresh myself. I find this works even though I don't like taking time off from practicing but practicing while in a rut just deepens the rut. So to approach the instrument with a fresh mind motivated to learn new challenging things while being patient and refining the things I'm good at and paying attention to the basics/fundamentals with out convincing myself I should be better than I am, really helps pull me out of a rut and I'm able to make progress.

I really needed to see this thank you. I always try to challenge myself by trying new complex material, but i forget sometimes to go SLOW and allow time to process new infp. Ive been going back to basics a lot lately and trying to fill in the gaps that i rushed thru in my early days. Strong fundamentals are huge

Terrific. I have been playing a long time, poorly, I started over about 3 months ago. Fundamentals. My head is full of theory, but wasn't making any progress. You're very welcome! Good job! If you can try to learn "Sight-Reading" Not for sight-reading, through sight-reading and you will learn " Muting Technique" and "Patience" Those will make you better player. That's why "Hours of practice" it doest mean that much. You know what to do!

Beautiful lesson - so much useful stuff. One thing - I knew what you were getting at when you said e-minor triad with a flat fifth was not the e-diminished triad, but you didn’t clearly explain it. At least, you did not explain more until after a detour, at which point some people may have lost the thread. It was a good point - that the musical context as well as the notes determine the appropriate voicing for a chord when we give it a certain name. It bears repeating. That was the one point where you might have gone just a touch slower, to bring everyone along. Otherwise, I thought this was a lesson - or reminder - for everyone needing or wanting to get back to basics in a productive way. Thank you, as always.

Mr. Fujita, thanks again for your words of wisdom! I feel my main problem with practice routine gone wrong is information overload due to learning as I go and lack of structure as I progress. As an older veteran guitar player I have been learning the pentatonic scale up and down the neck, major scale first position and I have been learning the Triads on the lower 4 strings, hoping I can connect the two for better improvisation.

It's like meditation. You drive the car and you dont see as much as when you get out and walk! I don't do any online things on phone. I like to see. Even if you carry around a giant phone its still really small. I buy a small phone. Additionally, you pay for the internet and the phone is a little crazy if you are at home most the time. I like the minor 6 too sounds like 7th chord nice! You listen to Mattao Mancuso before? Interesting picking technique....

Hello again Tomo. Let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head with this video , its right on time for me. Picked up guitar today after a while and realized hmm this is so fun and Ive learned a ton, and love to play, so, I need to practice and play more, and more often than even before. Cant wait to catch up on the last few months lessons. Forgive me if this is not the right place, but I will ask for forgivness if necessary lol. I bought the modern method vol. 1,2,3 complete book, is there difference between it and regular vol. 1 ? Im sure there is not, but wanted to ask here.?! Thanks for everything Tomo!

Hi, great video. I like that others love the guitar like me. I have played over 20 hours straight before. I am a fanatic. I love the guitar and can spend hours doing finger exercises, but I’m learning I’m doing everything wrong! This video is amazing! It is going to change how I approach my practices!!! I used to play right handed so now I play left handed, three yrs in, self taught until recently. I want to practice better and progress! I put on the hours so it eventually has to happen!!! Thanks for the video! If I didn’t have a job I would play 14 hours a day! I do on the weekends.😊

Thanks for sharing. Less hours better for me. Practice session should have time limit and move on limit (Don't practice too much once you have learned: scales & arpeggios.) So you can practice on performing in time.(not jamming over backing tracks) Happy to hear that you love guitar so much!

Yes, but it is all I want to do!!! So I do it😊 I find long exercise sessions really get the fingers moving well more quickly. I find I experience progress breakthroughs regularly because of the time I put in. I am motivated to get back to where I was playing right handed and better with theory application. I think I will be better left handed in a couple years more, 5 yrs total, compared to 13 yrs playing right handed. I think the finger exercises is why I can get there more quickly!

It's almost like you are literally spying on me haha. I was literally binging on the Andertons Rut Busters series with Justin Guitar because I just purchased a new beginner electric guitar, and have been playing for some time on an acoustic. Fully self taught through youtube. So I have the problem of, feeling like I know somethings but at the same time feeling like I know absolutely nothing because I've just acquired theoretical knowledge for the most part without fully knowing how to apply it. Therefore, my previous knowledge and a handful of songs that I learnt by heart are pretty much all I play while barely making any progress. I have your Tomo's tips playlist, along with Paul davids channel open side by side trying to learn all I can while absorbing it :D It struck me even harder when you mentioned Mateus Asato because that is exactly what happened, I watched one of his tracks and had this sudden urge to get better instead of fooling around.

And yeah its almost like no matter what Pete plays it just sounds like magic to my ears, I guess because we're both into the same kinda thing. music is supposed to have fun. that is where i failed it became a burden early in my organ playing days. wa s assigned to head a church choir so early on my training till burnout hits me. made me a little depressed. never touch a keyboard for more than 10 years. i love music but no more serious piano/organ for me now. it reminds me of those times its guitar era now

I did your chromatic scale exercise today and, I know you say slow, but I was surprised I was able to move so fast while keeping finger pressed on the strings, Lifting the fingers and not sliding down the strings, and transitioning pinkie to index cleanly and quickly! It was a lot of fun!!! I enjoy repetitive finger exercises! I like training my fingers. I do at least 2 hours of finger training not in the guitar neck everyday. I think it makes a positive difference in my playing this last year!!! I will continue my finger training as long as I play guitar. I want to basically have rhythm in my fingers and get them to move independently from each other in unison while staying in position, close to the fretboard and not flying back. I’m 1.5 yrs into picking notes and I’m able to keep my pinkie and ring finger right on the fretboard. Can I ask, why do you keep fingers on the string? What is your theory behind this? I do something similar with my finger training that I think I benefit from in a number of ways!!! Wondering what the idea is behind leaving fingers on the string. Thanks! Is it for spreed? I think This is what I heard you say. Thanks!!!

Thanks for sharing. As long as you don't hear any strings noise or finger noise. Record yourself. Then you know correctly. You cannot understand if you don't record (apply to everyone!) Set your amp, a little loud, more treble and less bass. (Do this exercise with treble 10, bass 0) Very important, NO REVERB all the times. (Should believe that REVERB is not exist in this world!)

I do 2 hours of finger training not on the neck of guitar every day driving to and from work! I will follow your instruction! I subscribed to guitar wisdoms. I practice everyday learning triads, songs, chords and progressions, I want to know all notes by sight so I always know what I’m playing. I’m going to tackle all of your guitar wisdom videos. I am so motivated to be a proficient guitar player and know how to apply theory! I am taking lessons from two instructors. You are going to help me reach a life long dream to play guitar. Thank you so much!!! I would not be able to get this type of instruction, information, wisdom, guidance without this. Your approach fits my approach better than anything I have found on KZfaq. My goal is to improvise for hours. Crazy maybe but I love improvising and love noodling for hours! It is so enjoyable. Keep up the great work!!

I think a good takeaway I had from this video is: A guitar player who has learnt their fundamentals will learn their favourite songs in a few days, meanwhile a guitarist who hasn't learned them will learn their favourite songs in a few weeks.

What happened to that guitar? It seems to have been in a scrape! Guilty on all 7 charges... although I am getting better at paying attention to the directions. I think this is why an undisciplined student needs a teacher, in person. When a teacher says, "no, do it this way", the student can ask and teacher can explain. Players like me are doomed to repeat video lessons before we pay attention all the way, because we always think we can improve a fingering or make something easier and more comfortable and "discover a shortcut". Plus, try to play slow and have 3 cups of coffee-that is really hard to do! Need less coffee, more meditation to to pay attention at a slower pace. I'll add another chord shape to the mix. I've recently learned a minor 6th voicing on the bottom 4 strings and it is exactly the same shape as the diminished chord on the middle four strings! Everything repeats, but changes, too. Maybe this is why bass has only 4 strings; it is less confusing! Another problem I had when I was younger is putting the D "triangle shape" on the second 3 strings and getting the F# dominant sound when I wanted the D major sound. That's a big surprise! Of course, that's a cool trick later on, when you do it on purpose to get a Dominant sound, but it is a struggle in the early days of learning. Anyway, another great lesson. And you're never too old to review foundations and get better.

2014 Kanji Guitar...I practice my R37 Swing Groove with that guitar so... Thanks for sharing. Some people before they become guitar students. They don't have good work ethic simply because they did not have a chance! So anyone can notice these details and points. Foundation is so important! I don't use any diagrams or tabs. I want people to hear as if your Stevie Wonder or Ray Chales! Intervals = imagination of colors! Triangle shape is find at first stage.Then you can hear as 5th R M3 so the middle note is the root! Yes absolutely! Never too old to review foundation! This way, it's gonna be a lot of fun.... waiting! Thank you so much!

I still say, All serious musicians should take at least basic martial arts class, even if only to learn patience. Slow is Smooth - Smooth is Fast. Learn to throw a punch and take 30 seconds to make the arm's full extension. Then another 30 seconds for full retraction.
