It does get bashed a lot, and while I do see it's faults an weaknesses, it's still a very tight, slick and enjoyable Bond movie. Then I see The World is Not Enough often getting a lot more praise when that's an absolute joke of a story with horrendous characters and really lame dialogues and acting throughout. In fact, Tomorrow Never Dies could even just about squeeze into my top 10 Bond movies (just!). Goldeneye and Licence to Kill are my two absolute favourites, though really it totally depends on my mood.

He also had the best facial expressions in life or death situations. Non-verbal acting is some of the hardest to pull off, imo. This scene is a prime example. Bond legit looks in fear that he could die at several points in this scene. Brosnan should have got 7 movies like Connery and Moore, but I guess he didn't want to play the role anymore after Die Another Day.

@@drlee2 He was still in talks for a 5th Bond movie after 2002's Die Another Day, but the studio wanted to take the franchise in a different direction because even though Die Another Day was financially successful, it received negative reviews from critics and is generally regarded as being too over the top and unrealistic. Nobody goes to a Bond movie expecting top notch realism, but there are still certain points where we need to draw the line and Brosnan's last outing as Bond crossed several of them. The Bourne Identity also came out around that time and shifted the paradigm of what we expected from action focused spy movies. So, with the producers wanting to take the franchise in a new direction, the negative views on the latest Bond movie and Brosnan's salary being on the high side at the time (he did play Bond in 4 financially successful movies, so that's understandable), it felt like a perfect time to switch to a new Bond while they revamped the franchise. It would be cheaper for the studio and fit in with the change in direction they wanted to take. On the one hand, yes, I'm a bit miffed that Brosnan didn't get a proper last Bond movie to bid farewell to the fans He is my favorite Bond and I would have loved to see in one more Bond movie before Craig took over. He was young enough to do one more, at the time. On the other hand, Craig was really good as Bond in Casino Royale and its success blew up more than a lot of people were expecting, so you can't complain about the results. Clearly, it worked out. At any rate, it's not Brosnan who didn't want to play the part anymore, it's the studio that wanted to change direction and took that opportunity to look for a new Bond at the same time, since they were faced with times where people were ready to go back to more grounded and gritty spy movies, mostly jumpstarted by The Bourne Identity and with the Craig movies following suit in that same style of gritty and character based spy movies, compared to the gadget heavy and almost surrealistic mess that was Die Another Day.

I always had the impression that this was Gupta's safe and porn/drugs. German porn for a possibly German guy . . . makes sense. Doesn't seem like Carver's bag. Although you might have been talking about him anyway.

DaveDexterMusic agreed. It was clearly Gupta’s safe, not Carver’s. And Gupta was hardly an evil villain. More like a lieutenant henchman. A bad guy, to be sure, but a guy you could count on to die a relatively uneventful and early death.

Would've been 1996 at the time of the filming... I'm not sure it ever had an actual colot display though.. Nokia Communicator that was released in 1996 was an actual release that mimicked the features of this, just without a color screen. This phone was released as Motorola R380... A bit different to the one in the Bond movie.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 did have a self destruct feature! Although they never did get it to stop auto-activating.

The thing is Brosnan has a under cover casual quality that secret agents are expected to have, Craig on the other hand looks too suspicious & bang bang loud to be a secret agent there is nothing secretive or unassuming about that fellow and he gets easily caught in most instances!.. To me watching this scene sure made me feel Brosnan is always the true mastermind bond because of how he smartly operates in the shadows like a real secret agent should plus he is simply too good looking on camera.

What kind of James Bond is that..... Could you ever imagine Connery, Moore or Brosnan doing anything like that... If you want the Bond from the books then watch the Dalton or Craig Bond, he used to have charisma and humor in the form of one liners, was suave, sophisticated, killed the bad guy and most importantly chased the women,( the eye for the ladies) all while saving the world, If you don't have all these qualities then how can you possibly still be James Bond anymore.... Bond isn't an icon for being Joe average secret agent Connery set the scene and it was continued through Moore and Brosnan, This is what separated him from all other action movie characters and why every guy wanted to be him.... I love the Bourne movies and have watched them all many times but if Bourne suddenly started chasing the women, developing a sense of humor or began being suave and sophisticated I'd be totally put off the character and that's why I was put off Craig from the beginning It's why Moore, Brosnan and Connery were brilliant and Craig is nothing more than discount Jason Bourne.

Pierce Brosnan shows that as James Bond that he has nerves of Remington Steele!

The script for TND was in scripting hell right up to filming, and even then was rewritten several times over. Pryce and Hatcher were used like cheap C-listers during the early rewrites, forcing the writers to redo it to improve things, but Hatcher was still used poorly. She regretted taking the role.

I think Pierce deserved a 5th film. Shame his movies went down in quality as time progressed. Even though I dont hate any of them, even Die Another Day. Even that one has a few great moments.

I actually like Tomorrow Never Dies better than Goldeneye....Goldeneye to me is ruined due to the cheese of the therapist in the car and the wall bending at the Chemical plant when he leans his back against it, the cheese is too strong. Granted Goldeneye on N64 is was one of the greatest videos games of all time.

Namely the first Phoenix Tower mission, the one where you stealth around and climb up and have to only KO guards instead of kill them. Night Shift, that I had to look up because I rarely replay it. I hate stealth so I used the level select cheat as a kid, haha.

TND was relevant in hindsight and a major talking point during the Brosnan era as during his final film he tries to reassure the Chinese government that the Brits isn't trying to take the port back
