Tom, I know you won’t see this but if you do, I’m so jealous that you still get to farm and spend time with your Dad! Please Please cherish it, you won’t regret it. I would give almost anything to spend a day cutting hay with my dad. I get to do it with my son, and I hope he feels the same someday. Wishing you and your family nothing but the best, and thank you for letting us be in your lives! A humble haymaker from western Pennsylvania USA.

The mower damage can happen to anyone when the manholes are unmarked. It happens. However, you need to put some flags/markers on those manholes to prevent the visibility problem, so they aren’t hidden by the tall grass surrounding them in your fields.

I will give you a pro tip, Tom, it is also low cost to keep things like this from happening, load up a car, fourwheeler or tractor with orange electric fence poles, or take white ones and put a orange flag on them with something, so they are clearly visible After every cut, you put them up at stones and stuff like you hit, and it will never happen to you again, we farmed the same farms since the 60´s and it never happened to us after we started doing that as a tip from another farmer

Great idea an isolated object in the middle of the field when I was learning to glide when approaching to land we were advised not to aim at the lorry towing the winch cable back up the airfield however being human even on a completely empty airfield the lone Lori always ended up as the target to which you aimed for without even thinking about it it takes a lot to concentrate not to aim your glider at the tow truck. The same will probably apply to loan electric fence poles stuck in the middle of the hayfield

Thanks for sharing this. Love watching you and the Ginger Warrior in the tractors burning some diesel. AND, best of all, you are willing to use yourself as an example of paying attention and not just nodding along. The groundskeepers at the school I worked at used to walk the fields before mowing and would put in little hazard flags by drains etc. I know this rare for you, but others might want to think about something like that. Great to see as always.

Your suggestion are good but I can see a problem. While I’ve never mowed a hay/Silage, I have reaped/harvested (peas, barley, wheat, etc.) grains and trying to jocks around poles and fences off area are a pain. What I would suggest is a brightly colored pole in line with the drains at either end of the field. That way they would remember to set the Linkage higher for that row. It would keep poles out of the middle of the field so they could keep a good rhythm. That’s the way we did things out in Washington state, US. I’m not sure if their tractors can raise and lower the cutting blades while in motion like ours can. Compared to the tractors/harvesters they use here on our farms yours are smaller. He admits to theirs being a small farm. Out in the Palouse Empire of Washington our smaller farms are about 2000 to 3000 acres, I’m not sure what is common in your area of the world.

In the snow country we put thin orange stick markers at curbs and other buried hard items so snow plows do not hit them, they stick 3 or 4 feet up. Given your grass is awesomely high maybe they will work for your manholes.

Hey Tom. I reckon you should bring Euan along more often as he has the perfect timing of a "straight man" for a comedy duo and has obviously had seriously in depth training in how to deliver lines with heavy sarcasm and irony (probably due to growing up on a working farm with "working words" like the Ginger Warrior proved he could utter) 😎😂. Also you could try and persuade Joanna to get in front of the camera a little more often (maybe to show you up a little 😁...). Apart from seeing her delight at doing well, it is great to see her confidence doing "farming things" improve over time... By the way you are lucky you are only due some heavy rain on the cut grass. We had a 15 acre paddock (many years ago) that was cut, then heavily rained apon. tedded once, rained on again and then overnight was blown off the paddock up against the eastern fence before it could be (small) baled. We didn't get a good result from that crop but there was a lot more uncut grass on other paddocks.

Tom, life and jobs don't always go to plan, even for the best of people, your dad is a marvelous man for his age, his get up and go attitude is scarce in society, to do an all night shift up to 6am, a couple of hours rest and then go back out again and carry on, that what he is used to, he can't retire, it's not in his blood, hard working man, you are the same as your dad, hard grafter,, great to see you letting your partner learn the tractor and mowing operations, it would not have happened 20 or 30 years ago, even less, it's great to see not like years ago, michael IRELAND [EIRE]

I moved to the suburbs years ago. I still use the orange stakes to mark the edges of the driveway & sidewalks in the winter.

Bash a fence post in to mark the manhole or lower the manhole cover so it's flush with ground level and the mower will pass over the top.
