We had a couple of neighbours who had just moved in and lived next to one of our fields. During harvest they called the cops as we worked late into the night best time was slurry though they made more of a stink that the slurry did. Police came and said to them how do you think food grows. Next time don't get a house backing onto agricultural land lol.

It's good that you are trying to be a considerate neighbour, however, if someone has bought a house in the countryside then they have to expect countryside activities (like farming) to take place. The UK 'countryside' IS a manufactured environment that wouldn't be the classic image people have of fields/hedges and animals if it wasn't for farming.

I’m surrounded by farmland and sometimes it smells and sometimes it’s loud during the day and sometimes the farmer is on his motorbike at 4am outside my place and I wouldn’t change it for the world The farmer keeps an eye on my house so I get extra security I keep an eye out for stock in distress or escaping stock it’s a win win

In fairness to most farmers if a neighbour has a good reason to ask most farmers could delay the job for a day or two and do, a homeowner who joins my land asked me not to spread slurry on a silage field last may because he had organised a family barbecue for the next Sunday and was surprised that we had cut the field a week earlier than usual, which we had and I said no problem basically because the guy was observant enough to know what we usually did and organised things so that he would not have to ask, it was not his fault that we had gone a week early and I had no problem leaving the field for an extra few days, also he asked nicely which is a huge help when asking for a favour. He also asked when I agreed if it would be ok to let the bigger kids play football in the field since it was mowed as there was a good few little kids and it would be great for them to have the run of the garden without having to worry about the big ones running over them again I said fine. Everyone happy! Bonus for me about a month ago someone left a gate open and a bunch of cattle got to the road, same guy and his two teenage boys got them back in and tied up the gate and I only heard about it a couple of days later when I bumped into another neighbour who had come on the scene. What goes around comes around and most farmers are very well aware of that so ask nice and you would be surprised how accommodating your local farmers can be!

We moved about 15 years ago to a nice area, with lots of fields and farms. Our glorious ( NOT} council decided that a new housing estate would be a great idea! now, we have over 2000 new builds matchboxes where the open fields used to be. Best of it is we have a few old mill sites and a disused coal and gas site that no one wants to develop! Our house is a terraced old mill workers house, built properly not thrown up.👍

It's upsetting that a lot of people in the comments are immediately trying to frame your neighbors as people moving somewhere where they don't belong when they weren't the ones who had the problem with the smell. I get why they would ask you to wait until the city folk left and I think it was also very nice of you to compromise. As long as they are not constantly complaining about the smell I don't think it was rude of them to nicely ask for you to wait a bit to spread slurry. Hopefully, your kindness goes a very long way and you have a beautiful relationship moving forward.

Tom, just this once, if you could get the services of a tanker fleet to quickly empty the slurry pit, that would buy you some time to rectify the problem of extra rain water increasing slurry volume. And, the solution should be a permanent one, not temporary. Temporary fixes tend to cost more if the original issue is not fixed.

You definitely need to do something to reduce the amount of rain water going into your slurry system. Covering the clamps wil clearly help recue it, maybe also covering the yard in front of the new parlour and/or the muck yard. one after the other, this can be done in separated parts and will not block your operations like the parlour did. Good effort though.

Worked at a large beef slaughter house ( steers, bulls, sheep & lambs ). I had to do a walk thru in stock yard that had covered roofs to check supply & exhaust fans. Steer manure did not smell too bad. Worst was the rendering room where they cooked guts, scrapes etc 24/5. Only had to spend 30 seconds in that room and your clothes and skin had a bad smell. Would wear shoes from work to front door the take them off outside after spending time there. Pig manure along with just pigs are the worse smelling things for sure.
