Bacteria Blooms crop up every once and a while. Why? Sometimes at the start up of your tank, sometimes for no reason apparent reason you can think of. In this video, Tom explains what bacteria blooms are, autotrophic, heterotrophic, how they are caused, and a few possible cures. Performed on his 10 gallon nano reef.

Hi Kaylon, thanks, that’s possible. My 20 gallon mixed always had high phosphate. It could be how much you ate feeding. Water change schedule, do you vacuum your sand bed? What test do you use? N03 gets consumed more readily then p04, that’s why it could be lower 👍🏻

Hey Johnny, thanks, my only issue with dosing Phosphate and Nitrate is, I’ve never done it before. I’ve never needed to. Make sure you have the quality tests for nitrate and phosphate. And don’t forget just because your showing zero on tests doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re zero. Corals, existing algae, and everything in your tank is using up both nitrate and phosphate. My 75 gallon is testing zero on both nitrate and phosphate and I have hair and bubble algae issues in the tank.

Hi Tom. Perfect one. I was a boom from 1 month ago. I just let my tanks absorbe the bacteria. That’s during 3 day. At the beginning I was very confuse but in fact it is nothing. Thank for the sharing.

Very good video! Just one mistake made - oxygen level doesn't affect pH at all. It's the CO2 produced by heterotrophic bacteria lowers the pH while absorbing O2 leaves it less available for other animals and can lead to suffocation in extreme situations.

Hi Jack, Oops😃 I believe I was trying to say what you said, but said it the wrong way. Haha. I had to do a bit of home work on this vid. I’ve never experienced a bacterial bloom in the 27 years I’ve been keeping reefs. I may have when I first started, but that was when just waiting it out was normal, and not researching it. 👍🏻😊 thanks for the correction.

@@TOMReefer I haven't had any trouble with it knocking over corals. They pick up little bits of shell or rock to camouflage themselves. Well this week I had a smalll piece of one of my zoanthid colonies come loose for some reason. It has like 4 polyps, and the urchin picked it up and is wearing it lol

Nice video Tom I've never experienced briopsis weird lol,so tanks back in action turns out my chemi pure packet was polluting my tank it was probably 6 months old lol I've got it on the calendar to change every 2 months that's why I lost all those clowns lol,I'm trying to slowly work my way into dosing but I can't at the moment I've been testing and my calcium is at 530 all softies doing fabulous ,my fish stores salt water I tested this morning at 552 so its the stores high calcium levels not my error since I don't dose,I wanted to pick your brain...so can I switch back to mixing my own instant ocean reef crystals eith there rodi and do a 50-100% water change or would that be to big of a drop in calcium ,I could bring it down with 2 little fishies part b alkalinity but ide like to start from a better position dosing both alkalinity is fine for now around 10.2.
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, Instant Ocean reef Crystals is around 420-450, so a 50% might bring it down a bit. You could do 2 - 50% changes over 4 days. I wouldn’t do 100% change. 😊👍🏻sounds like the tank is doing well👍🏻

Hey, how do you keep stable water parameters if you buy your water from your LFS ? I feel that’s why I have so much trouble with my 32.5 gallon tank. My tank will be a year old this September and I have literally 3 different zoas, a hammer coral, a wall hammer, a huge Kenya tree and a shrinking flowerr anemone , and I feel like I can’t keep anything else alive because I buy my water from my LFS. I also have a redsea 4 head auto doser but idk if I’m Hurting the tank dosing as well, dosing NoPox, Alkalinity, & calcium.other peoples tanks I see that are same age or younger have ridiculous corals and are way more established seeming than mine
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Travy, you would have to test your water every time you buy from your LFS. Why can’t you mix your own? If your dosing, you should test calcium, alkalinity, ph weekly until you continue to get the same measurement for a few weeks in a row. Then just keep the same maintenance practices each week. If you watch my videos from the beginning, 2 years ago, I give you all the beginners requirements to get a tank going and stabilized. 😊👍🏻

JUST SUBBED 😊What is a way to conquer my Cyano outbreak? I’ve been doing 25% water changes weekly the past 1.5 months (used to do 10%). My tank is a 38 gallon FOWLR tank. My water parameters are 1.023 salinity, 0 Ammonia, 7.8 PH, 0 Nitrite, 0 Nitrates. The tank has been set up since beginning of Feb. the Cyano has most the rock covered and areas on sand bed. The past week I’ve been using a 1/2” wide clear tubing to suck off chunks on the rock but it grows back. The fish store told me to Chemiclean it like most people do. I’ve only been hesitant to do so because someone said doing that will also kill all your beneficial bacteria.
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer Жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, sometimes cyano can crop up for reasons we have no clue. Sometimes it can be low flow. Water change won’t get rid of it. Test your phosphate and see what that reads. ChemiClean has always been my go to for cyano. It won’t kill your beneficial bacteria. Just follow the directions. It works really well. 👍🏻thanks for the Sub! 😊

@@TOMReefer oh that’s great bud! Thank you so much for your help. Love your video. I have a powerhead on each side of the tanks across from each other. One pointing a bit down and the other pointing a bit up. There 528gph powerheads. I tried putting a third one in about 4” off the bottom and all the fish hid in the rocks. So I took it out of the tank and running the 2 again and all fish are out swimming around again.

@@paularamos5752 been in the hobby for over 7 years. Never had a tank like this it’s crazy. I will never ever ever ever start with dry rock again. All my other tanks were live rock. These diatoms are really getting worse on my sandbed. I need a silicate test but idk where it would be coming from. I’m hoping to jus run them out and they burn out. I see my corals doing well and coraline getting a nice foothold which is a great sign it’s just this diatom bloom that’s left.

@@paularamos5752 sooty I missed this! Sometimes when hair algae takes a hold it will always be there. Then grows back in the same place it was before. If it’s really bad, and it’s a small tank, it’s got to be hermits. 2, even 3 per gallon, and manually removing along the way. Once it’s gone, keep up on the hermits. But most likely, over time it will come back. Sometimes it’s a constant battle with certain tanks. 😏
