"She needed a hero, so she became one."
During the Reign of Terror, Jean-Paul Marat called for the deaths of "enemies of the people," fueling the fire of fanaticism as heads rolled from the guillotine. When no man had the courage to stop him, Charlotte Corday assassinated this bloodthirsty Jacobin fanatic. While she was sentenced to the guillotine for her actions and Marat was hailed at the time as a revolutionary saint, Corday has since been hailed as a hero of France.

Unfortunately Corday's actions were based on the naive and false hope that the killing would stop after Marat's death. It didn't! Marat became a martyr instead. It took a few years until the tide turned and his body was thrown out of the Pantheon.

The thing is that most anti-revolutionaries were rather poor or marginalized. Simply the end of infamy ment a great loss of capital due to job competition for those practicing "badly viewed jobs". And for exemple, the aristocracy and the fashion industry did feed many mouths. So someone who worked as a lace maker for exemple was now begging in the streets. Of course they would resent the Revolution. The abolition of privileges also ment many provinces lost their cultural, economic and linguistics rights. At least, during the monarchy they were free to speak their languages and to exploit a series of ressources as long as it was done within certain rules.

Marat had a massive commitment to the labouring poor. I dont like his maniacal politics, but his one redemption was his love for, and championing of the poor.

Thank you very much, I am French and I have to give a presentation on the assassination of Marat. Thanks to you, I am now absolutely certain of my conclusion that Charlotte Corday was a poor girl who let herself be bamboozled by false words. And yes, American friend, when you don't know your subject, it's better to keep quiet. Charlotte Corday was a Girondine (in the sense of the political current of the time). the Girondins were liberal and capitalist bourgeois, which is why they were supported by the English. They claimed that only the wealthiest citizens, the “active citizens”, should have the right to vote. they were opposed by the philosophy of the "montagnards", of which Marat is a part, which believes that the people as a whole should be able to vote (which includes black men in the colonies) according to the concept of a sovereign nation. your dubious parallels and your lack of historical rigor concerning my national history are purely outrageous!

@emmabertrand9970
@emmabertrand9970 Жыл бұрын
@@dundundun7215 who didn't support women rights ? Montagnards? Yes they were not particulary feminists, like 99% of men at that time, their political ideas were no less revolutionary from the point of view of the struggle for equality. The montagnards were in a political struggle to the death. Corday was not the only one to be sentenced to death, and not because of her gender. Certainly, the events that occurred during the terror are open to criticism - even if understandable with the historical context - but that has nothing to do with sexism. Analyzing political developments based solely on gender relations (even if this is important) can show a profound lack of a critical eye on history.

Poor Charlotte Corday - hailed as a heroine who got rid of a horrible man, but was in fact a misguided woman who thought she would stop killings by killing Marat. Not as simple as that, lady! In fact, it sounds like her action made the French Revolution even worse.

Mr. Richey - another interesting (and somewhat relevant) story of a woman "doing awesome things with men trying to discredit her" is Agnodice in Ancient Greece! She was the first Athenian midwife (in disguise of a male physician) , and was so successful that she put other male doctors out of business. The rest of the tale is hilarious (I don't want to spoil), so I hope this would be something you'd like to read about.

Comrade Bill Marat ordered the deaths of so many people Charlotte believed she was saving thousands of lives by killing him. But yes, she brought on the Terror instead. Among those killed was the man who prosecuted Marie Antoinette, the shoemaker who was her son's cruel jailer, and the infamous Robespierre. Well, they say what goes around comes around.

I love all the feminine fawning over Corday. The aristocracy wasn't so great, either. Surely you all remember "Let them eat cake," spoken by another famous femme. If you're capable of unpacking that sort of injunction, and the sentiments embodied by the Second Estate, then one ought to be cautious when heroicizing anyone, really. Note: I simply came upon this video, I haven't seen all the other segments, so if my thoughts are represented elsewhere, then that's that.

Knifing somebody doesn't make you a hero, it makes you a murderer. Even if somebody is a wicked person doesn't mean you can justify a kill by your self. If such a person is trialed and proven guilty and put to death by s state, that is justified.
