Some American cities use buses, or trams, or trains. Peachtree City, Georgia, has a different solution: it's not quite public transit, but a hundred miles of golf cart tracks helps to keep cars off the road.

The Georgia road trip continues! Thanks to Mayor Fleisch and her team for their time. I realise that the golf carts aren't directly comparable to public transit - for a start, they're privately-owned - but I'd say that replacing cars with slower-speed, electric vehicles is at least an improvement!

I just want to make it abundantly clear that this is not the only city that does this. This is very common in Minnesotan towns, as many neighborhoods are right next to golf courses. I know this is common practice in Minnetrista, every home has golf carts.

"You can't have a quarter of a cart network" I really wish my local council were capable of that kind of logic. They decided to build a cycle path the the next town and successfully completed their plan. At no point did they ask the other town to build a cycle path to join theirs though. So it's literally a path that goes nowhere, it heads towards the other town and then stops dead on the boarder. Well done, money well spent. I'm a biker myself (although I do have a drivers license), but I definitely can see the advantages of the golf carts. For example when it's raining, you can still go out and about and be quite protected from the rain. When you are shopping, I bet you can load more bags in the cart than I can on my bike. If I lived there I'd probably use the bike on nice days where I don't have to fill my bike up, and the cart when it's a rainy day and/or when I need to shop a lot of grocerys.

@@mofo888 Yes, that's right, but there's still a (huge) difference if you build cities around bikes and public transportation or if you build them around large roads and cars. There's a few cities like this in the USA. The most well known is The Villages in Florida which is a huge retirement community. They have special lanes for golf carts and they have the right of way. It's not uncommon to get cut off by some elderly person in a golf cart when driving there (I used to all the time for business). There's also a few cities that allow them on public roads as part of the city ordinance, Lake Helen is one.

All these comments along the lines of "they should use bikes instead!" are missing the point that the city-wide network would not exist without the carts. Since the paths offer multi-mode transportation, the city was able to raise the taxes necessary to build and maintain the paths. If they had tried to raise taxes for a bike-only path network, the city government would likely not have been successful. The network is as extensive as it is because of the golf carts.

I think the other advantage is every cart on the cart path is one less petrol powered vehicle on the roads. Golf carts don't have the high barrier to entry that full electric cars have and it is extremely practical to take your golf cart for groceries / inner-city transport and use your car exclusively for your out-of-network trips.

Every used, removed and abandoned railroad track in America should be transformed into paths like this for everyone to use and enjoy. Great idea thank you for sharing. Also My property years ago boarded a railroad track that had been removed and I kept it maintained just like my yard, it was great. Had everyone maintained their portion then several subdivisions would have been able to go that route 5+ miles to the closest store or restaurant other than the Little General, sure would have been nice. Once again thanks and best of luck with all your adventures. Be safe and live a happy life.

Maximum speed limit within the community is 35 mph and the carts have lights, turn signals, horn and seat belts and a speed limiter of 25 mph. Gas carts get 40 mph with a 5 or 6 gallon tank, electric carts get about 35 mp charge, insurance can be added at the back end of your car insurance for less than $50. This saves quite a bit on car maintenance and costs. The community has everything you need except big box stores which are close but not accessible by golf cart. I'm not familiar with other 55 plus communities in Arizona that allow golf carts.

But for normal people this means the price of an average house is skyrocketing in certain areas such as Peachtree, which is a major film town, not to mention it's distance to ATL considered. I lived on an island in December 2018, until August 2020. It was inland and was like a peninsula, but it was technically an island. There were two bridges connecting, and the only reason you would go into the island would to be there for a specific reason. There was no pass through for traffic. It was called Daniel Island and was in Charleston SC. Anyway, people rode golf carts everywhere. It kind of looked like the city in this video, but it was much bigger. It had about 70,000 people living in it. Anyway, they rode golf carts on the rode, to school, and on all of the pathways too. I thought it was cool because the city in this video seems so similar to Daniel Island.

This is brilliant! Less people on the actual road , less pollution, and more paths to take with your bike , jog or just walk.

My dream was always to have a big enough house that I could have a path around the property where I could drive a golf cart. This video is heaven to me.

@The Four Horsemen Yea but these are effectively a car in terms of amount of passengers as well as luggage space but much less harmful to the enviroment. That is my point.

Almost as good as that innovative new thing (which I believe has yet to really take off in America) of putting one foot in front of another. "Walking", I think it's called.

Less carbon? maybe. I'd imagine the users own a golf cart, and a car for longer journeys. Then the cart runs on electricity so is zero emission? In the USA that electricity is probably made by burning coal, so not really, it's just moving the pollution elsewhere. Possibly still a net win as it's driving change, and cleaner energy may come later. Now if there were nuclear carts then that would be low carbon...

While impractical in most places, this seems like an excellent option for certain areas. Takes cars off the road, gives a safer place for cyclists, safer option for younger driver and all around just seems like fun.

@@Kevdama1 Section 78 - 94, Allowed "things" on paths (4) Registered electric-powered golf carts or motorized carts; (5) Registered gasoline-powered golf carts or motorized carts; So it seems that both electric and gas carts can be on the paths. A shame that diesel carts can't be on the paths. Some of those only turn on when the pedal is pushed and immediately shuts off when let off.

I'd love a road network like that and see a lot of sense in it, considering the amount of duplication going on in even larger cities. You often have blocks of housing with schools and retail centers dotted about in repeating patterns, so it's not like many people would often wind up with a 20MPH limit being a major hurdle. I'd imagine extra-long cart rides would only happen to slightly more people than extra-long drives by car currently affect in many places, and unlike the latter, the former could be bridged by public parking lots at bus stops and the like. The only proper bike trails in this city I'm in were just put in as a token gesture here and there, and the rest are confined to parks. You just can't get around via cycle here unless you live in work in very specific places, unless you're willing to commit to sharing often shoulderless roads with normal traffic. Considering normal biking speed for many is 10-20MPH, and most roads here have speed limits of 40-60MPH and not so much as a shoulder or sidewalk (city ordinances ban biking on sidewalks, but people often ignore that for safety's sake when available, and no one enforces it), it's just asking to get run over once the sun goes down. Basically, I'm radiating enough jealousy to power a small town right now.

I would suspect that many northern cities, all other aspects being equal, would be a poor fit for golf cart paths due to freezing weather or snowy conditions requiring plowing of and or salt application to the paths.
@jonmichaelgalindo
@jonmichaelgalindo 5 жыл бұрын
True. The paths are way too slick if it snows / ices, and the golf cart tires just aren't designed to handle it. Plus, your fingers already get really cold even if it's not freezing out.
