In this video we take a look back at the last 2 years of game dev, which I spent making a multiplayer pirate game. From the early beginnings of working with a console app-based server and BepuPhysics, to experimenting with shaders, water simulation, and island generation, to the more recent additions of grappling hooks, this video summarizes the entire journey so far and shows what 2 years of indie game progress (might) look like.
If you're new to the channel, this is a great way to get up to speed on development without having to watch ALL of my existing devlogs (although the last 2 are definitely worth checking out!). Working on this project has been a wild ride so far, with lots of mistakes and lessons that I learned along the way, and I can't wait to see what the next 2 years will be like!

As someone who just started unity courses to try to recreate last oasis, I appreciate these videos. Glad to hear it! Sea of Thieves has come pretty close to the game I've always wanted to play (and I've played it quite a lot), but there's a bunch of things I wish the game had or did differently which will almost certainly never be implemented. So now I'm building this :P
@shaake6887

@@tomweiland I can see. You basically turned it into last oasis and what last oasis originally was. Grapple hook, wingsuit, even though you aren't planning that, and full survival but with directional combat. My issue with it is, the devs have completely destroyed the game I love and changed it from its original state so much, that it doesn't resemble what it was in its glory days. Best of luck to you! Can't wait to try it out!

Ways to make a good pirate game 1. Full PvP server for people that just want to plunder and steal from one another 2. A story mode for people that want an adventure involving pirating. 3. Put a market out that players can trade with one another (in PvP servers would be interesting how they gouge each other for prices and try to nab things to have an advantage over others) 4. A pirate crew as a guild though you can still mutiny against one another. 5. All needed hands and roles for driving the ship. People to manage sails, the helmsman, a ship doctor, ship cook, powder monkey (cannon manage), captain who leads and distributes loot. Pirate captain starts the crew and can choose a quartermaster and first mate who has some levels of authority in the crew. 6. Requirement to eat and drink to put challenges of carefully managing supplies before you go out to sea. Ammunition and other things are also things to limit how long you can stay out in sea and plunder. 7. In PvP servers, players can also side with the Navy to capture and attack pirates for loot if they're better at such things. 8. Third person 9. Ship can be destroyed or drifted and lost in the vast sea. You can take refuge at an island and rebuild a new one if you got enough wood. This would require a shipwright and tools of course. Or get one built at a town. 10. There will be neutral towns which you can sail to and start trading and do quests. But you can also get into fights with other pirate players (long as it's PvP server) but be warned you get attacked by the town guards as well. Just think WoW goblin towns

1/2. I don't really intend on splitting things up that way, but there likely also won't be much story content-certainly nothing as extensive as Sea of Theives' Tall Tales. Unfortunately story content takes a lot of time to develop and is something with comparatively low replay value, which isn't exactly the type of thing I can afford to focus on as a solo dev (or even as a small team). 3. Agreed. A player driven economy/trade system would be cool. 4/5. It sounds like you're talking about crews as a group of AI controlled characters, which is not what I've been envisioning. So far the plan is to have you crew your boat alone or with other real players (much like how Sea of Thieves does it). You can arrange "roles" with your crewmates if you like, but that probably won't be something that's enforced through a game mechanic. 6. I definitely want to include some survival mechanics-eating, drinking, and perhaps even fending off certain diseases (scurvy?). 7. Again, I don't intend to split things into separate PvP and PvE modes, but mercenary/bounty-type quests are something I'm definitely considering. 8. Highly unlikely. I definitely want first person to be a thing, and I'm not going to have that _and_ third person as it'll complicate virtually everything. 9. I'd like to make you steal your first ship from an NPC or something, as your first act of piracy. I'm not really sure yet how I'll handle sinking and getting a new boat. 10. Towns & trading quests will definitely be a thing. Thanks for the suggestions :)

Hey man, been enjoying your videos, especially the tutorials. But I have to say, you are being too hard on yourself! Making mistakes is what makes us go forward. And also, I don't think any of the things you mentioned were boring. I love to know about the super technical stuff that everybody seems to want to avoid. Anyway, hope this comment can lighten up things for you. Good job and keep it up! Ah and if you would like a better model for the character that hunts our dreams, I could make you one! I like talking about the more technical stuff too, but it's really hard to make that stuff interesting for those that don't know as much about game dev, and on a platform like KZfaq where average view duration is absolutely essential for having your video pushed out to more people, leaving it in could single-handedly kill off the video :/ I appreciate the offer for a new model, but I'll decline for now as I like the change of pace that modeling provides, and we'll probably overhaul the player model on stream soon.

@VancoldGH
@VancoldGH 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomweiland not in particular, but i thought that a lot of pirate games focus mainly on naval battle but resources and other stuff always is second. Puzzle pirates had a resource system that was based on what you foraged and where you sold it. Each item needed to be crafted by a shop meaning that if you had a job and people would gather a lot of resources and sell it to your homr island you'd charge less for something but at a good price and people would pay for it or you could specialize in somrthing etc etc. So the item prices were player driven. Players could be citizens of certain island, those islands had a player mayor taking care of stuff. You could create money out of nowhere but 90% of the time it was a closed loop and i liked that. You had a great impact on the economy of an island in how you did things / your pirate alliance. Also you needed to travel to islands to visit shops. All shops / ships were super customizable (its a 2d game)
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
Economy-wise that sounds kind of like what I have in mind, except for maybe the players-having-jobs part. Not sure I want to force people into picking a certain role, not to mention that I'm not even sure how that'd really work in an instanced world (where not everyone is on the same map).
@VancoldGH
@VancoldGH 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomweiland yea i mean they are not forced they were there if you wanted. I had a prototype and what i tried back then was to have a global database for all sessions and players could either increase or decrease certain goods and trade / loot them. Yeah, the other part is that I was just fed up with school when I graduated. I couldn't imagine doing 4 more years of taking classes, dealing with homework and exams, and this time _paying for it_ :P Adding extra cannons will definitely slow your ship down-I want to keep ship modifications relatively balanced so that they simply serve different purposes/accommodate various playstyles instead of being objectively better/stronger than other ship builds.

I mean to be fair the game _does_ look similar to Sea of Thieves in several ways. Do you mean allowing the grappling hook to attach to a cannonball that's flying through the air or just to the actual cannon (because it already does that, and I'm not sure what would be cooler about that than grappling onto other things). If you meant the actual cannonballs, that probably won't happen-it'd take a lot of work to set up and it would be nearly impossible to actually time your grappling hook throw to hit the cannonball midair (and even if you managed it, it wouldn't be particularly useful).
