@@jaewoopark3144 I agree, the problem is that he is presenting this educatively as an example specifically of rythmic lead-follow, where he fails to follow very noticeably. I'm sure he is a great musician with a ton of experience, and I'm not disputing that. But it's not like they're playing live, he could have easily done other takes and used a better one.

@@shoganflamemasta3975 I’m afraid I have to disagree with your view that he fails to follow the lead. The lead-follow relationship is significantly different from a dominate-obey, which I think is what you’re looking for. If he were merely to comply with the lead, it would reduce him to an accompanist. I believe the demonstration is good enough to show what he wanted to say. There’s no need to re-film it.

When you play in amateur big bands with people NOT reacting to one another, you start longing for such a great player. This is music lesson number one, after learning how to play the instrument: do listen and know who you should follow. Even if you don't like piano or cello or this music style, this is a great example. Playing a jazz classic, they can show us the same, be sure of that.

Furthermore, the last 2 cello sonatas, op. 102 were published in 1816 as "Deux sonates pour le Pianoforté et Violoncell". I think that, for just this short, here, being in tune, it's not the main point. It's just a rehearsal, he doesn't need to concentrate on being in tune. My current cello teacher does the same sometimes. Moreover, when you are a teacher you don't need to be the best concertist. you CAN be both, but it's not at all necessary. My classical guitar teacher played worse than me when I finished my music studies, yet he was the best teacher i ever had. It's not an age problem, even if if you have hearing or muscular impairment it may be an issue of course.

When I was learning to accompany soloists, I was taught that two instruments are equal, i.e., they work together as equal partners. However, when accompanying a voice, you must let the singer take the lead because they are dealing with breathing issues that obviously, you, as the accompaniest, don’t have to worry about. ☺️

They would have needed more rehearsal time. The accompanist was well within her right to bend the phrasing how she wanted for the repeat, but given that they have the melody in unison it takes a good deal of time playing together to really understand the other's tendencies, which they don't seem to have here. The ensemble faults don't lie entirely with one person--they both have responsibility!
