Rift Sawn lumber is the most elite of the cuts. The log is milled perpendicular to the growth rings, which are 30-60 (ideally 45) degrees to the face of the board. It produces a linear, straight grain with a clean, consistent look

I have an L-series Strat but have never knew it has brazilian rosewood on the fretboard. Very interesting and it does, as he says, certainly have a beautiful tone! Does anyone know what the "L" stands for?

I was always under the impression that Ebony was an excellent wood for a neck. I’ve got a few guitars with ebony boards should I take extra precaution in terms of humidity? All the best!

Ebony is the gold standard on any acoustic, but often that is matched with mahogany. He was speaking ebony over maple as being difficult, and again that would be a bigger problem the more you move your guitar around to different climates, or the live where the climate chases you. I find the ebony mahogany acoustics I make a great. But mahogany is not all that strong, so if you go to a very fine neck profile a lot of ro9d action, and obviously steel strings, you are in a different design situation. There is also a ton you can do for stability in the finishing. For instance if you are going to put a film finish on any neck, you can really seal out all the moisture and defend the neck entirely against fluctuations. If you move from the desert to the pacific coast, your neck will eventually acclimatize, but that would be one time thing. But that kind of thing has to be built into the neck from the get go. And every penetration has to be dealt with. Every fret, machine head, etc... Not difficult to do, but you have to engineer the whole thing.

My Luthier told me yesterday the Mexican strat I sent him had the best looking quarter sawn piece of wood on it he has ever seen on a guitar.

One thing traveling guitarists need to consider very carefully is that many of these woods, including some very common ones are protected. There was a huge problem in the US over the implementation of the Lacey, act, and I think it has calmed down. But in a sense, it wasn't wrong, and it was terribly intrusive. Some dolt at the border could deem your wood to be of a protected species, and seize your guitar, fines were huge. You were deemed guilty. You guitar could be subject to destructive testing. A guy in a shop who just sent a customer's guitar to the US for service got charged. Total nightmare. Brazilian is the insane worst wood in that regard. Owning a Brazilian guitar (no mater how small a piece, and small enough pieces look like many other woods) should be approached like owning the real Mona LIsa as a private collector, where you can look at it in your home and enjoy it, but got help you if you take it on tour. Shell/pearl is also a problem. You can buy shell on ebay, but god help you if you order it into the states. And lord help you if you travel with it. The real mahogany is Cites protected, and for now, no problem as far as I know, but it makes me nervous building in it with the range of alternatives, and what the future may hold. With electrics were are lucky because most of the sound and aesthetics are outside the tone woods if we are honest about it. If I was a touring musician, I would get really friendly with maple and similar woods in all their variations.

Would you say that a roasted flatsawn neck is more stable than a quatersawn neck, or is it the other way around?

Hi Peter - based on the stock in my shop, I would say that once the maple is roasted it doesn't seem to make a difference! Which is fantastic.

Yeah, surely a tiny slab of wood that strings never touch will certainly change the tone and you will be able to hear a difference... So much bullshit spreading in the electric guitar world that it's disappointing as hell.
