A closed airport and lack of communication have continued to hinder international relief measures on the Pacific island nation of Tonga after Saturday's massive volcanic eruption and tsunami, even as significant damage was reported along the western coast of the country’s main island on Tuesday. The New Zealand High Commission reported damage on the island of Tongatapu, which is home to many holiday resorts, and the waterfront of capital Nuku'alofa. The United Nations also said that satellite visuals showed extensive damage on the western coast of Tongatapu, with several resorts and houses destroyed or severely damaged.
The official toll of deaths, injuries and damage from the disaster is still unclear, as the South Pacific archipelago has remained severed from the rest of the world after its main undersea communications cable was cut during the eruption on the uninhabited volcanic island of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai. In the first known death from the catastrophe, British national Angela Glover, 50, was killed in the tsunami as she attempted to save dogs at a rescue shelter she had set up with her husband in Tonga, her brother said. High waves from the eruption also caused two deaths in faraway Peru, where two women drowned. The country also reported an oil spill after a ship was affected while transferring oil at a refinery. "We don't have any further information that would suggest... significant casualties, although, as you would appreciate, information is still relatively patchy," Australia's Minister for the Pacific Zed Seselja said on Nine's Today show on Tuesday.
He said the airport could likely open by Wednesday, with volcanic ash currently preventing planes from landing safely.
The UN said on Tuesday that it had detected a distress beacon from Tonga. eThe UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed concern about the small low-lying islands of Mango and Fonoi. An active distress signal was detected from Mango. "Communication is still the most challenging single issue as internet and international phone lines are still out of order," the OCHA said. "Satellite phones are the only reliable instrument for communication with the outside but they, too, do not always work reliably." Meanwhile, the New Zealand High Commission said that it was trying to establish communications with smaller islands "as a matter of priority." The eruption triggered atmospheric shockwaves and unusually large waves that traveled as far as Alaska, Japan and South America.

We are discovering that some of the islands have had every house demolished by a combination of the two effects based on overflights. At least two other Tongan islands (other than the ones part of the volcano) couldn’t be located after tsunami (they were eroded below low tide levels by the tsunami). Similar loss of power issues led to the Fukushima nuclear accident - the generators were flooded and the emergency batteries ran flat. @michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 2 жыл бұрын
No comparison because Tambora Volcano which when it erupted was rated as the only eruption with a rating of 7 on the Volcano Explosivity Index in the last 1000 years or so. It was the most destructive eruption in several centuries. The ash and sulphur dioxide was thrown into the upper atmosphere cooling the climate by a couple degrees globally. 90,000 people died from starvation because crops were ruined by ash fall. The Tonga was a massive explosive mostly because of the magma encountering sea water. Water expands its volume 70 times when converted to steam. Imagine millions of gallons of water converted to steam suddenly. There was not much ash and minimal lava from this explosion. Most of the cloud was vaporized water with some sulphur dioxide. Not near of the later to cool the climate.

The planes couldn't go any earlier cos ash clouds and airfcraft engines are a bad mix. Just ask the crew of British Airways flight 009. So, the people of Tonga got a bunch of people together and started clearing the runway for when the sky was clear, and when it was safe to land... the supplies were landed. There's no point crashing a plane and losing more people and supplies because of impatience. Impatience gets people killed.

@@ericcampbell6261 Poor argument for saying don’t build near volcanoes… Volcanoes can and do have global impacts. Yellowstone for example has killed almost all life in the continental United States - repeatedly at 600,000 to 800,000 years intervals with the last eruption 640,000 years ago. Mt Taupo in New Zealand has a similar history as does the Phlegraen Fields in Italy (if it erupted Italy and Greece would be buried).

@@allangibson2408 sooooo you can read a book or watch a youtube video. Why, that's just amazing. Still doesn't approach the point. Don't build your summer home on Mt. St. Helens........ again. Humanity is not going to dodge all the bullets. We need seaports so you're not going to avoid tsunamis entirely. Earthquake zones are so extensive that it's also tough to dodge that bullet entirely. ACTIVE volcanoes are a little different animal. There's massive scientific data to support whether they are active or not. And additional data with rolling day to day data to suggest what level of activity. In the case of super volcanoes, their long term activity is a moot point. You can't predict across a million years because there's no absolute verifiable proof that you're accurate within a hundred thousand years. It's educated guessing. Yellowstone is educated guessing. But the level of thermal activity suggests that it's a long term crapshoot. What I said originally clearly implied Vesuvius is chronically unstable. Maybe, just maybe, you shouldn't build your vineyard in Naples.

@@ericcampbell6261 A lot of people build near volcanoes because they perceive a low risk of eruption AND the climate is beautiful. Kilauea has erupted frequently however people lived in some areas for decades until couple years ago when an eruption destroyed much of the neighborhood. And many countries such as Indonesia and Philippines with dozens of active volcanoes people get a benefit living a volcano because ash can enhance soil fertility. Plus the dangerous eruptions are not so frequent and people are willing to take the risk. If there is an eruption people can usually escape without too many casualties. The issue of not living near the Tonga volcano is not the issue here of course. People live on islands 60 kms away. Again, beautiful climate and unlikely threat from a volcano. Earthquakes are a much bigger risk and of course very unpredictable though some areas are much more vulnerable to major earthquakes such as Indonesia. The Tohoku earthquake in 2011 was probably a bigger threat to Tonga then any volcano. And typhoons are much more common then either.

The images of the eruption came from the Himawira 8 satellite which is in geosynchronous orbit over that spot, but it can see almost half of the earth because of the high altitude of 35,800 kms . That satellite takes a shot every ten minutes which gives a sense of how fast the eruption occured. That plume grew to about 160 kms across in about an hour.

There's 105,000 people in tonga. They managed to clear the runway. New Zealand C-130 arrived already. They want the aid, but the personnel will unload the stuff, and let the locals handle it. It's to reduce the chance of introducing COVID to a country that does not have any COVID cases. It wouldn't be good for the older people of Tonga to survive a tsunami and then die from preventable disease.

Honestly, I'm not sure why an inch or two of ash should stop planes from landing. More likely it stops them from taking off again. It would be unhealthy to have people shoveling the runway without proper gear. Dropping satellite phones or radios, in aid capsules on parachutes is not a bad idea. We dropped all sorts of aid over Europe as WWII was ending. Likely we don't have those sorts of aid capsules ready to go because we don't typically deliver aid like that anymore. However, it would work and be helpful in this situation, so it is unfortunate it's not being done.

@@jasonlarsen4945 At times they do air drop emergency supplies and kit! It is certainly not unknown in the vastness of the Pacific. US Aust and NZ aircraft, and no doubt others have done so. Both on land and at sea! The NZ Airforce has air dropped emergency medical supplies and airmail in canisters onto the British Territory of Pitcairn Island 5,500 kms (3,400 miles) east of New Zealand. Which has a pop of around 40 to 50 people and no airport. They once air dropped a bulldozer onto the Island. So yes, it is done at times. In the case of Tonga that option was mentioned. However the primary effort by the Tongan authorities is to clear the volcanic ash from the main airports runway.
