I guess the other thing that differentiates traditional Pacific societies from Western monarchies is the social, familial, and genetic proximity of the chiefs to their kinsmen. The chiefs ('Ariki/'Ari'i/'Eiki), from among whom our monarchs are chosen, are not foreign men and women whose authority is imposed upon the common people by a foreign government (e.g. the imposition of French nobles and their authority upon the Anglo-Celtic people of England by the Norman Plantagenet line of kings). They are our own flesh and blood, and function as the heads of our families and elders of our kinship groups. In other words, they are *one of us* .

@@souveniehollande979 The Tongan monarchy is the only Sovereign independent island monarchy in the south pacific, counting Thailand and Japan (A constitutional monarchy), in Asia. Contrary to belief,, the English crown is an iligitimate monarchy because those dynesties are all German and or from Germany.

Yes. In fact, Tonga is the only indigenous monarchy in the south pacific that was never formally colonized. The head of state is his majesty King Toupu IV.
