Toni Kukoc Spurns the Bulls to Sign with Benetton Treviso (1991)

May 11, 1991 - Despite being drafted 29th overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1990, Toni Kukoc remained in Europe until the 1993-94 season, earning back-to-back EuroLeague Finals MVP awards in 1990 and 1991 with KK Split before signing with Benetton Treviso, where he was once again named EuroLeague MVP in 1993.
Kukoc finally arrived in Chicago for the start of the 1993-94 season, the first season following Michael Jordan's initial retirement. In Jordan's absence, Kukoc took advantage of his opportunity to develop at the NBA level alongside Scottie Pippen, acclimating into a critical supporting threat in the Bulls' second three-peat championship run between 1996 and 1998.

Many people don't realize how skilled Kukoc was. 6'11" with handle like a guard, can shoot from anywhere, post game, and the best part of his game was his passing. It's why they called him the waiter.

Today I can't really imagine a perennially contending -- championship winning ball club then also somehow adding the best player in Europe on their roster, that's insane.

@@mattm3729 That was when Jerry Krause was in his prime as the GM. He had the roster assembled really well to succeed for a long time around Jordan. I'd say after the Rodman trade in 1995, Krause went on a huge decline as GM mainly with the way that he handled Jackson, Jordan, Pippen, etc.
