HBCUs prepare you to excel in any environment. The message from day one is that you matter in this world and belong in any hall or corridor of power that you choose. As a HBCU graduate, I’ve never had a problem adjusting to any environment. My professors had all been where I wanted to go and knew how to get me there and keep me there. Another benefit of HBCUs: Black professors in every program of study on campus-who’ve made their mark in their respective fields and have come back to show the next generation of Black students how to do the same. I did not truly understand diversity until I attended an HBCU. To be surrounded by the best and brightest young Black minds from all over the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe, is something I will never ever forget. Attending an HBCU is so much more than obtaining a degree, it is to both literally and figuratively join, and continue, a legacy of Black excellence.

@@tiago7160 I agree with you. It's the same here. Whites will say "yea I'm poor, but at least im not poor and black. "Sadly I feel that racism has become such a deep part of identity in some that they'd feel lost without it. Entire societies and cultures have been created around racism. Same goes with oppression in blacks. We have become used to the narrative of being victimized to the point many can't see themselves as anything other than victims. Which is detrimental to one's ability to move forward and progress. I pray for healing on both sides.

Absolutely true statement for many African American families, particularly in the Midwest: Yes, we've always known we have the moral high ground. It's quite plain. And the horror and the shame of the racist is that they know, we know who is morally superior.

However, this woman has helped me more than anyone deconstruct my own biases enough to look more to the humanity of someone rather than what they look like. I wish she got more recognition than she did in her life to be fully honest. She broke through a huge glass ceiling and she went to the stars with her ability to simply break down racism and cut it at the core. Bless you Ms. Morrison.

Racism is destructive, and it can take on many forms, however the confusion or misconception that I find often surfaces around thinking about racism, is the single idea that racism simply connotes an interpersonal conflict, rather than a structural and existential construction which at the very core is about POWER. Who has the power to wield multi-dimensional forms of anguish and destruction, material and immaterial, on huge populations and cultures of people? It's not black people.
