Blair is a smooth talking snake oil fanatic. His tactic is to pick one positive aspect of his position and drum it home repeatedly. Notice he actually sidesteps the debate by ignoring Hitchens points and merely repeating his own mantra. That’s what he always did as a politician. @@RadagonTheRed If that were only true, you'd be one of many atheists who've seen the light. Raised in a militant atheist family, Sy Garte became a respected research biochemist with an anti-theistic worldview-and he had no intention of seeking a God he didn’t believe in. That is, until the very science he loved led him to question the validity of an atheistic worldview. These questions led him to wonder about the true nature of the world, and eventually the Holy Spirit guided him to a belief in God, and in Jesus Christ …. Alister McGrath, a historian and biochemist scientist who believed in evolution. A professor of science, he became a Christian apologist …. Francis Collins is an American physician-geneticist and atheist who discovered gene diseases and led the Human Genome Project. He investigated many faiths, and though he resisted, the evidence was clear. He converted to Roman Catholicism …. John Gurdon, a developmental biologist is known for his research in nuclear transplantation and cloning. He’s a Nobel prize winner in Physiology Medicine. He converted from agnosticism to Christianity …. John Eccles, a neurophysiologist and a Nobel Prize winner in Physiology Medicine was an atheist who converted to Christianity …. Rosalind Picard was raised as an atheist and converted as a young adult. She is a scholar and inventor who founded MIT’s Affective Computing Research Group. She has received the highest professional honors accorded for engineering skills. She converted to Christianity …. Famed astronomer, Allan Sandage, was an atheist who converted to Christianity, stating, "I could not live a life full of cynicism. I chose to believe, and a peace of mind came over me” …. Blaise Pascal was raised in a secular environment and contributed to scientific advancements in mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, fluid dynamics and probability theory. He proposed the probabilistic argument God known as Pascal's wager, to justify belief in God and a virtuous life. Not only scientists but highly educated people in general become Christians: …. Gilbert West was an eminent English poet who studied at Oxford. He tried to debunk the resurrection of Jesus but could not. He became a Christian and wrote the book ‘Observations on the History and Evidence of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ …. Simon Greenleaf, a chief founder of Harvard Law School, referred to Christianity as a silly myth. After being challenged by students based on historical evidence, over several decades, he became a believer in Jesus Christ and Christianity .… Albert Henry Ross an Englishman lawyer and journalist. He criticized the Bible and believed in Darwin. He wrote a book to disprove the resurrection of Jesus. Instead, he became a Christian …. Anthony Flew was a famous spokesperson of atheism before Dawkins and Hitchens. The world was shocked when he suddenly admitted God exists in 2004 and wrote a book about it. He based it on scientific, empirical, and philosophical evidence. If you’re an objective thinker who pursues objective truth obsessively, and in a rational way, eventually you’ll become a Christian …. Devout Muslim Intellect Nabeel Qureshi investigated Christianity for 15 years trying to disprove it in favor of Islam. Although he had believed firmly in the God of Islam for decades, after examining the evidence he uncovered, he decided to leave Islam for Jesus Christ and Christianit …. Lee Strobel is an investigative journalist. He was an atheist and tried to prove the Bible was not valid. The evidence he acquired changed his mind, and he became a Christian …. Jordan Peterson, an astute and rational intellectual and world-famous philosopher. He said the Bible has proven to be more durable than stone or an empire, and it’s a life-changing academic and historical text. He credits it with his conversion to Christianity.

Best way to become an atheist is to read the religious texts critically. Take the Christian bible. I can name 3 stories where children died as a direct result of the god from that book. 1- Noah’s Ark - when god flooded the Earth to wipe out all of mankind except for Noah’s family and some animals, it wasn’t just adults he was killing. 2- the tenth plague of Egypt - firstborn sons. He could have just killed the Pharaoh and his men, but decided this was more appropriate! Eventually killed them by closing the parted seas on them anyway, meaning the firstborns died for nothing! 3- the story of Job (pronounced Jobe) - Job’s children died in this story out of God’s pure ego to win a bet with the devil that Job would still love him after losing everything. This story is messed up and the most awful reason for any child to die! I challenge you now to read the Quran cover to cover with a critical mind. I guarantee you’ll find flaws. Not because it’s written by god, but it’s most certainly and obviously written by man. Once you’ve read through it, drop me a line with your thoughts and most troubling verse that makes you think maybe it’s not the best thing to write in the religious text?

Dated as it is now I think I will come back to this for years to come. In my opinion Hitchens was superior but Blair represented his position well. Each orator was defending the dignity and humanity of their side; Hitchens on the ability of humankind to overcome the shackles of intellectual servitude and "stand at our full height" and Blair defended the good of the inspired to advance the world by sincere love through true faith. The debate will stand for me as a testament to the power of a well reasoned debate- i.e. raising our intellect by the contemplation of different points of view in pursuit of a higher goal, sorely lacking in the present day USA. Thank you Munk family for using your prosperity to give the world this gift.

Tony Blair really is some sort of Gollum.... perhaps consumed internally by the enormity of his own crimes... during his premiership, he took precisely the role of the clerics/arbiters of divine will that Hitchens so well describes...denial is a powerful thing. He's so desperate to believe in something... perhaps the alternative leaves him unable to accept the enormity of his own actions..... a tragic figure indeed.

Christopher Hitchens' entrenched opposition to Christianity seems to never be considered in light of some very compelling, and telling, facts of his formative years: 1) His mother, Yvonne, whom he understandably and admittedly adored, was Jewish. 2) She died in a suicide pact with her adulterous lover, a man who was ordained as an Anglican clergyman. These are reasons aplenty for Christopher to vehemently oppose the church, as he did. But I find it particularly sad that in this debate about "religion," when Christopher was already diagnosed with a fatal illness, no heartfelt plea was made to him to accept the Jewish Messiah, Jesus, as personal savior. The following segment is from Christopher's autobiography, Hitch-22, and precedes his account, in that autobiography, of his mother's suicide along with the former priest: ...throwing all caution, as they say, to the winds - she told me she had had an abortion, both before my own birth, and after it. The one after I could bring myself to think of with equanimity, or at least some measure of equanimity, whereas the one before felt a bit too much like a close shave or a near-miss, in respect of moi . But this was the laid-back early 1970s, and I had neither the wish nor the ability to be “judgmental.” Yvonne was the only member of my family with whom I could discuss sex and love in any case. I was then informed that her lover Timothy had once been an ordained minister of the Church of England (at the famous church of St.-Martin-in-the-Fields, off Trafalgar Square, as I later discovered) but had seen through organized religion. Both he and she were now devotees of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: the sinister windbag who had brought enlightenment to the Beatles in the summer of love. www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/202805/hitch-22-by-christopher-hitchens/9780771041150/excerpt#:~:text=She%20had%2C%20with%20her%20lover,himself%20in%20a%20hot%20bath.

Atheism is not a religion by any stretch of the imagination, it is the absence of religion and the acceptance of reality. Ignorance is a gift to realists as it makes the wise strive for knowledge. Have to confess, I can't say I thought I'd ever be agreeing with Tony Blair on anything and I'm not a religious believer. I think it was ignorant of Christopher Hitchens to dismiss religion as just a moronic belief in a man sat on a cloud telling us all what to think and do. Think of all the major civilisations of the past and present: Egyptian, Roman, Greek, "The West", Chinese etc., all of whom made major contributions to help get us where we are today in terms of technology and thoughts. What underpins them all? The answer is an organised religion of some sort. Until recent history, religion underpinned everything we do in the west from laws to daily routine and shaped our ideas about beauty, logic. It was certainly not the best system, but it kept life organised to some degree for the vast majority. Granted, religion certainly did not directly create many of the things we have today, but they were certainly created by people with that mindset. The difference today is that the same religion-based underpinnings are used for modern life, but without the acknowledgement of where they come from or why we need them. I think this is what has made the world so disjointed and unsettled.

Religion has been responsible for so many things in the past such as the establishment of schools and was man's early attempt to understand and explain the world around him. Today religion should be regarded as a scaffold that has been in place for the construction of modern understanding. Once our modern understanding is established and sufficiently advanced, the scaffold can be removed and the true splendour of the universe and our existence observed. Some societies are not advanced enough to allow for the removal of the scaffold and some have foolishly built the scaffold into the structure of their respective societies rendering its removal very difficult, painful and costly. Societies have to have the education, understanding and confidence, that their social structure if properly formed, can and will stand on its own.

I would say that religion is quite the opposite, or at least Christianity. If you follow the progresses made from Ancient Egypt to Greece to the Roman empire, we moved from strength to strength. Only for religion to come along put us in the dark ages and make sure that we stop progression. That god needs us to worship him not improve ourselves is what we were told.
