Tony Rinaudo, known as the “forest maker”, has spent the last 25 years working with communities to fight climate change in the world’s poorest countries. His revolutionary approach called “Farmer Managed Natural Restoration” was instrumental in pushing back the Sahara Desert in Niger, bringing 200 million trees back to life. The technique has since spread to 26 African countries, restoring 15 million hectares of farmland in West Africa alone. In this video he tells Michael Messenger, President & CEO of World Vision Canada how FMNR can be scaled up to prevent the next hunger crisis by mitigating the impacts of climate change on the most vulnerable people, increasing their ability to adapt and build their resilience against the shocks that lead to famine.

Thank you for this excellent presentation. Unfortunately many Christians have been reluctant to admit to the reality of climate change. As though 'the world is going to hell in a hand basket', rather than creation's being entrusted to us to care. The proof of our love for the Creator, is the love we have for his creation. Anything less is to betray our Creator.

Love of creation may be evidence of faith in Jesus Christ, but not necessarily. "By this shall all men know that you are my disciples- that you love one another as I have loved you." But some Deep Ecologists claim that their passionate love for the natural world necessitates the culling of humanity. That's very different from Christ's love of humanity, which may be expressed in activities such as this teaching and assisting soil regeneration. But activities like this aren't necessarily proof either.

I read about this about 10 years ago. For the last 2 years I’ve been using this method to help the remnant bushland re establish and my small 1/2 acre in Rockley, rural NSW. Great to see the progress!

Tony. Thank you for what you are doing. Your childhood prayer has been answered. I am a Permaculture designer certified with Permaculture research Institute. I hope I can meet you someday. And even work with you someday. I currently sponsor only 15 children with World Vision. My goal is 100.blessings on you for everything you are doing. I hope we can meet soon. Blessings. Kell Horton.

Good on him for bringing this to Africa. Sugar cane farmers in Queensland do this ratoonly - quite a common farming practice. They also will need to learn to rest their fields, and rotate crops too.

He dint bring this technique to Africa, it’s a technique came up with and developed whilst working in Africa and now the rest of the world adopting this technique. So if they are using it in Queensland they are adopting the technique that he created. Look up this technique, his work and his explanation of why he created it. He grew up in Australia and dint like how they were managing agriculture…….FIY Africans already know and having been practicing resting of fields and crop rotation for centuries……
