Here you can see the solo Tony Williams did during a workshop in Salzburg (Austria) on July 31th 1987. Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter were also teaching there. The late Austrian drummer Erich Bachträgl was one of the participiants (as far as I know you had to audition to be accepted) and he gave me a copy on vhs tape while I was studying with him in the early to mid 90s. I had completely forgotten about it for years but remembered it a few days ago during some "drum talking". So I digitalised it with the possibilities that are available to me. Therefore the quality is not the best (it also has been copied a few times till it got into my hands back in the days and the vhs tape certainly has not gotten better over the last 20 years). But I think it still might be of interest for some people out there.

god bless Tony. its great to study his footwork here. the way he used his hi hat foot to anchor of the pedal to counterweight finess figures with the bass drum foot. Also, his concept here is heavy. So many different kind of orchestrations. you could break any of them down and study for years. And his use of silence. Gave his sound majesty.

Even though he really didn't ever need one he must have just been curious or wanted to feel like he was staying modern. He was the core of Modern! May he be blessed Eternal.@@a5dr3

The stuff he does with his kick and high hat is something I have been trying to play for years. It is amazing to finally see it on video. It's like...holy shit...how does he do that?

Glad that youve enjoyed it Cynthia R. Blackman. In case you might not have allready seen it - I´ve uploaded another one. You can watch it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtSJesWQ2NXPimh0.htmlnd I do also have a 2 hour audio file of a bit of the Workshop. (not the best Quality though). I think you might have seen Tony in Person often enough that you won´t learn anything new, but if you´d like to get it I can Show you where and how too...btw. I´ve teched for you once about 20 yerars back in Graz, Austria. Unfortunately I don´t remember who you were playing with (it was a Trio-Anthony Cox maybe?). But the secoond band was Vinnie Colaiuta with David Torn and you did a Jam together in the end. You were playing a big blue sparkle ( I think) Sonor set.that I picked and set up.

Amazing that even without the CS Dot heads, it still sounds like him. I always equated those a huge part of his tom sound.

It's those Gretsch edges, die cast hoops, and high batter side tuning. I've heard his reso heads were looser than one would expect.

Sounds like tight resos as well to my ear. Check those pitches, smallest rack tom is a 13" and it sits at f3.
