Should You Move To North Carolina?

One of my subscribers asked "Where is a good place for a middle class family to move in North Carolina?" In this video I explain a bit about why I like the area where I live - but I also give credit where it's due to the whole of the Tarheel State. Take my advice or leave it. If you are from NC, and want to chime in, please do so. Also, if you've left North Carolina for a place you think is better, please tell us why. This will be an interesting topic for discussion.

Great video. I'm from Ellenboro (off US-74 in Rutherford County) but have lived in Forest City, Maggie Valley, Cullowhee (WCU '09) and Dillsboro. I can say that service industry is big in the southwestern part of the state west of Shelby unless you're willing to commute to Greenville/Spartanburg or Charlotte. If you really want peace and quiet, Jackson county is the place to be.

My wife and I live down here in coastal Va, but like you we used to live in Spruce Pine. We absolutely loved that little town. We had a little art and local craft gallery right next door to the famous "Gladys's Shoe store". She was a great fun neighbor and really had a wonderful dry sense of humor. I must say I'm glad she liked us. We knew so many wonderful, fun and slightly crazy people there. (Crazy in a good way). We were affiliated with the Penland school and I worked there in the mid 90's. We're seriously thinking in the next couple years with retirement fast approaching of heading back to the mountains. My wife loves Roan Mt, and I'm ready for a slower pace and the clear water and air. Enjoyed you tutorial. Be well.

Thanks so much for this awesome vid on NC! It was so informative and just a great breakdown of info on the state areas of NC and great recommendation on the city data site. We are looking to move out of Florida and more than likely to NC because the homeschool laws seem pretty comparable to FL and we just love the Carolinas mountain range. So thanks again! Great JoB!!

Move to NC! Yes, absolutely! Consider yourself lucky to be able to do so. I have lived and served my country in NC multiple times. The beaches are the best: still natural. But my heart belongs to the Foothills area, hands down. There are good & bad people everywhere, but in Western NC, you will see mostly the good. The scenery is awesome, cost of living fabulous. There is a unique slice of American culture there that will soothe your soul & bless your heart! The hard part might be employment. That is changing though. Jobs are defiantly improving. And this is a place that one must have reliable transportation too. Don't miss your chance to live among and know these sweet people!

Jeezus. That was the exact opposite of what I experienced in Western NC. All I saw was a bunch of methheads running around, looking for something to steal. I actually saw one say "Praise the Lord" after stabbing a tourist and running off into the woods. (Swannanoa)

Just stumbled on this.. 5 yrs later. Asheville if you are liberal as hell, Charlotte for city life. I was lucky, my grandparents had a large farm in Warne, on the Ga line... Loved every minute spent there. I was free labor, spent 3 weeks every summer there, two of em bailing hay and the rest traipsing through the mountains and fishing.... Franklin is where I'm gonna retire, not too far from Sylva where my dad is buried... My heart is in them hills!

This is another one of your videos that I really enjoyed. I live in Lenoir and love it here. I'm what you might call a military brat and a missionary kid. That being said, I've lived in France, Germany, Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Colorado, Washington State, and California. As far as natural beauty, I would only say that the Cascade mountains in Washington state can compare with the natural beauty found here. That is when the sun comes out, which it rarely does there. I also prefer the warmer climate that Lenoir, NC offers. I also prefer the conservative ideas and a higher percentage of God fearing people this region offers. I grew tired of the hustle and bustle of city life which has become only a distant memory since living here. The people are friendly, laid back, and polite as a whole. I love the southern hospitality, the beautiful lakes, the rolling hills, the wildlife, and this region's largest variation of plant life found anywhere in North America. Last but not least, I love living in an area where finding a good, gospel teaching church is not difficult.

I have a motto: don't go into any place, unless you want to marry into their culture. Don't be an outsider agent for the very things you left behind. Before moving to any place, research its culture, its people, their attitudes to one another and towards the life. Before moving out from your place, get to know some folks from your chosen destination, make some friends with them, invite them to your house here, go to their house there. See whether you can financially make it there or not. Don't be necessarily optimistic nor pessimistic about that place & its people. I think these are some good rules to follow about moving to any place.

Do you know where Shut-In Creek Rd. is on the Cherokee/ Maggie Valley line? There is a beautiful spot where the water runs through over the rocks. I picked up many rocks from this area. When we go back on July 2nd, we are stopping by there on our way up to our motel in Maggie Valley. I can't wait!! Guess what? I found a (crisp) 5.00 bill folded in half on the entrance of Soco Gap just outside of the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway! Can you believe that?

I love NC. Attended a month long metalsmithing session at Penland school up there near Spruce Pine, back in 1985, and have made it a point to get back to that area every chance I get. Last time I was there, played drums in the Asheville drum circle downtown. Also made it out to the coast, but not so impressive. Used to the west coast, I guess. The long muggy slope to the sea west of Wilmington began smelling like overflowing septic tanks 30 miles from the beach.

If you like traffic, congestion and hoardes of people come to Charlotte. If you need a job come to Charlotte. I've lived just outside most of my life. It's cool that in 3 hours or less you can be in the mountains or walking the beach. If you are nearing the end of a career and looking for adventure & beauty and seeking a certain non-urban lifestyle, steer clear. The NC mountains and coast are 2 of the best spots on the planet.

I live in Portland Oregon but I'm originally from the east coast. I would say Seattle and Portland are two of the most beautiful cities in America. In Portland, you're only an hour from the beach and Oregon beaches are gorgeous (but cold) and then you're less than an hour from the cascade mountains which reach heights of over 14,000 feet. However it's expensive to live here and I definitely miss home. Plus it does rain a lot which doesn't bother me too much because it makes everything so green but I miss having snow regularly. Idk why though but it just doesn't feel like home. Can't wait to move back. Definitely looking into Charlotte. Which is better though, Charlotte or Atlanta?

I live in Maine. Born and raised. But I have some southern roots in NC, SC, and AL. I am looking to buy or build a forever home and I am just SO torn on where I want to be. I LOVE my state of Maine. The nature is just beautiful, life is slow paced and calm (at least where I live), and I love that I get the full effect of all four seasons. Winter and Fall being my favorite. But when I visit the South to see family I am just in love. I can breathe better (my year round allergies are bad in Maine), the people are wonderful, cost of living is CHEAP, and Eastern NC (my favorite part of NC and where Im considering living) reminds me so much of Maine, but you can tell its different. I grew up on a farm and live in an agricultural part of Maine, and I just love the agriculture in NC too. They just take it to the next level and its SO beautiful. Im doing my research and Im looking into smaller rural towns in Eastern NC. Im looking for towns similar to my current town. Its smaller, everyone has their privacy and space, but neighbors are still there and are nice. I want to be far enough out the city where I dont have to deal with the city life, but I dont want to be too far out where its a long haul to get groceries. (Currently I'm about 15-20 minutes away from the closest city). Im sorry this is lengthy, but I am just SO TORN!!

I lived in Wilmington, NC for 5 years (2009-2014), it was ok, perfect size city (not too small or too big), cool up and coming downtown area, beautiful parks and green spaces, but as a single guy in his early 30's, I think Wilmington is more suited for retirees because of the nature of it's low paying job market and high housing prices, and also I felt too isolated from the rest of the state. In 2014, I moved to Orlando, been here for 2 years and I HATE IT!!! Horrible traffic all day!!! Rude people!! Crazy drivers!!!! and more of the low pay/high housing costs problem. What I miss about NC: friendly people, hyper-political environment (in Florida everybody just wants to go to Disney or the beach, not much of an intellectual scene here) pork bbq, lower grocery costs/more competition, (Florida is run by King Publix and Queen Wal-Mart). In conclusion, I hope to move to the Triad area in 2017, in my internet research, I like the central location (relative to the rest of the state), low cost of living/decent paying jobs, low traffic congestion (not tolled to death like Orlando), plenty of cheap things to do, lots of museums and universities and a good intellectual scene.

I dont see much change in that area except many of the dirt roads are now paved. My uncle lived all over southeastern NC , so I got to see a lot if it growing up. I love the peaceful farms and nice folks around there . I love the whole state except the big cities.I personally would like to live in the piedmont where I can just see mountains on the horizon, hear crickets every night, and not have too many nieghbors, and have a good church fairly close. I enjoyed your post, but I wouldnt be trying to get more people to come there. They did that in Florida, and in 40 years my hometown grew × 4. I've lived in Charlotte for 40 years. I'm at the outer edge of it with Matthews, about 50 feet into my backyard and over the creek. We were annexed into Charlotte 39 years ago. North Carolina allows cities to annex unincorporated areas when they have 2 persons per acre. I liked the area when I cam here. It was rural. Now It's all developed around me with all the roads expanded and expanded with apartments everywhere even a Super Walmart a mile away. I've grown to hate it. But I do have another home in Emerald Isle. We rented the hose out every summer and paid all expenses including renovations and upgrades, the mortgage and taxes from the renters. We're about 10 miles from Camp Lejeune and sometimes it's noisy but we love the beach and it's worthwhile. We go there during the non-summer months. The real difference for me is the culture. Charlotte is loaded with Liberals who spend like there is no tomorrow. Carteret County is 80% Republican. We have very little debt, it's clean and virtually no crime. I can't wait to finally leave Charlotte.

Well, thank you, Tony Lee! I should have been there last week, but I am a disabled vet & the driver I needed for my moving truck suddenly needs to stand by here in Florida for a relative with a serious medical situation. So, hunting a new driver, then after the holidays, "Plan B". Hey, we hear down here about the hard work your leaders are doing to bring back jobs to Morganton. Way 2 Go! You have a joyous Christmas holiday and I will be up there soon. Lunch at my fav BBQ place 1st thing...lol. Bye!

Hi Tony, We’ve watched all your videos. They have been really helpful. We are coming to NC in Sept. to check out the state. We’re driving from Raleigh to Asheville to Charlotte to Pinehurst to the Outer Banks in 7 days. We are from Northern California and want to be closer to our daughter in New Jersey. We are retired and are looking at the areas I mentioned. I’m really interested in the West, but my husband is thinking Wake Forest/ Apex/ Chapel Hill might be better. He was intrigued by the Outer Banks, but is kind of worried about accessibility to shopping/airports/.medical care, and of course hurricanes. We also thought about the Pinehurst area. We want some privacy on about an acre of land and we want to be in a small town, but not too far from airports, hospitals and shopping. What would you recommend? Thank you! Lyn Brock

I live in Charlotte NC the biggest population of NC. I go to the city area about 3 times a week. The Panthers stadium is there and I met Cam Newton. There's not much pollution which is good. The thing is there's the Ghoul of Charlotte which is where many ppl get murdered or shot but it happens almost everywhere. Another good thing about Charlotte it's only about half an hour way from Carowinds, a really fun theme park that my family and I go to every weekend in the summer. Wilmington is also a great to live because u are pretty close to the beach. So I think Wilmington or Charlotte!! Hope this was helpful to anyone!!

Thanks for your video Tony, I think you do a great service for your state and its people. I am in Miami florida, originally from Colombia, middle age married guy. I am a Registered Nurse talking with an agency to do some Home health in either High Point, Durham, Winston Salem and Greensboro. Honestly I am suffering from chronic Miami fatigue, severely. Horrendous traffic, very expensive, rude people, and suffocating-lly over populated. If you could give me some pointers about those towns I would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

+Al Vlz We have a huge nursing shortage in Asheville at Mission Health (I work there). So many people have been moving to Asheville because it's made over a dozen "Top 10 Places to Live In America" lists. They come and have healthcare needs. Send me an email so we can discuss opportunities. Winston and Greensboro, etc. are great places - but Asheville is really something kind of magical. Here's the email: tonyleeglenn@gmail.com

I was figuring the Georgia/NC border would be what were looking for??????? We love to go 4 wheeling and have 2 horses, so a place with trails would also be something we love to be near. Any recommendations??????

I moved to the Lake Norman area in 2002 from Pennsylvania, at first I loved it but around 2006 smart phones came In our lives. The population exploded and with that the traffic became unbearable and every one is looking down at their phones and not on the roads. The NC people that are not still sore over the civil war were very nice but the rude transplants moved in wanting to bring their B/S with them. I still will say NC is beautiful and I miss it except for the traffic. The weather is better but I believe I get more time out doors in the north, yes we are in crap weather four months a year but the spring, summer and fall are beautiful. The summers in NC are to hot and you still get winter but I’m sure on average the weather statistics are better but for me I was forced indoors more in NC. I moved back to the Pa mountains in 2017. No place is perfect but now when I get on the roads I don’t have all the traffic although people are still stupid with their smart phones it just a lot less of them. If I could’ve found land in the NC mountains that would’ve been ideal but I owned a place in PA so it was easier to return. So to all you NC natives I feel your pain with all the Yanks moving down and screwing up your lives in a beautiful state but now you have one less to deal with although my two children call the south their home now and they stayed.

My husband and I have been to both Cherokee last Nov. and back to Cherokee and to Maggie Valley, NC in Mar. I personally fell in love with Maggie Valley. What do think about purchasing a piece of land there or perhaps it would be smarter to just buy a house. I found one we really like in Sylva. We are in Florida and with all the 'talk' about SHTF, I'm seriously considering a move up there in the VERY near future. Any suggestions are welcomed! Thanks.

+mountainsandsea Well you have good taste if you like Maggie Valley. It's gorgeous there. I think you'd like it, and it's an easy drive to Asheville if you like high-end shopping/dining/entertainment. Not sure what to recommend about buying land or house. Probably better consult a realtor about options. I just know I love that Lake Junaluska area. Nice folks for the most part around there too.

Jose Wojciechowski For my money some of the prettiest farmland I've seen is in Lincoln County. There's a pretty little town called Cherryville there, and Charlotte is only about 40 minutes away. This is just one of many possibilities though. It's a good balance between rural life, and the many jobs of the big city.

Durham is pretty cool. A lot to do there and in the surrounding area. It's flat and hot. I prefer the mountains or foothills, but there are better jobs down in the Raleigh/Durham area. Crime rates are a bit higher there too. Most of the people are great though. You should just visit and see what you think. But also consider Hickory/Morganton area - or Charlotte if you like bigger cities. Asheville is cold in the winter but very cool. Wilmington is great if you like coastal areas.
