I started with a F-1 in 1975, upgrading from a Pentax Spotmatic. I got a second F-1 in 1984 (still have this one). The AE-1 was quite amazing at the time. During the time the AE-1 came on the market I was working at a camera store, and in just over a year, I must have sold a couple of hundred of them. (Received several awards [prizes, kickback whatever you want to call it] from Canon for my efforts) At the same time as the T70 they released the T90, which was another revolutionary camera. The T90 was my next camera. It was the first of the smooth body Canon's and is still a design style used today. The EOS mount almost took the company down. Sales dropped dramatically, and it took some fantastic lenses with some low prices, coupled with the the EOS-1 to bring the company back from the edge of failure. There was several digital cameras before the D30. But the D30 was the first of the popular DSLRs. There is also a lot of history in the non-interchangeable lens digital cameras, my first digital was a G3 which still takes nice pictures and gives me enough control to be creative. I also agree with your final conclusion, Canon are in a bit of a creative lull, but they still make great stuff!

Talking about eye-controlled autofocus... After my experiences with a Canon 50E, I can ensure you that once you "teach" the camera to recognize your eye and where you are pointing it at, it is suuuuuper awesome to just look at a focus point, half-press the shutter and... Boom! Focus locked... Give it a try!!

When I moved from Russia to Canada in 1997, I bought a 35 mm Canon Camera.. I think it was a Rebel. I joined New York Institute of Photography and had fun learning photography with this Canon. It was an expensive hobby, because of the price of all the chemicals, film, paper etc. After that I switched to Nikon, but now I'm back -- shooting wildlife and KZfaq videos with a Canon 6D Mark 2. My three favorite features of my 6Dm2 camera are 1) Dual pixel Auto-Focus 2) Touch screen focus 3) Flip screen for KZfaq 'selfie' videos.

Great walk down memory lane. I bought my first Canon camera (A-1 not AE-1) in 1983. The A-1 had shutter priority and apature priority. You could also get the optional electric motor. I believe it was good for 2 1/2 frames per second. After all these years it still works. I always enjoy watching your videos. Thanks

+Travelerfour Ever The motor drive for the A-1 was even faster: up to 5 fps! It also had a vertical grip/release, and a really cool feature I've never seen anywhere else: an instant HiSpeed button right under the baby finger. You could be in any drive mode and then immediately call up the highest possible speed for a quick burst. The button even had a lock to prevent activating this feature by accident. Very clever!

cannon with 2 ns would be an instrument of war, canon with 1 n is something completely different. With 1 n that would be "a general law, rule, principle, or criterion by which something is judged."

Missing the A1 and the T90. 2 of the most iconic film SLRs.... The A1 was the first camera to have Shutter Speed Priority, Aperture Priority and full auto exposure modes. The T90 body was designed by Porsche Design and it set the basic body design mold for all modern day film and digital SLRs.

Actually the Minolta XD5/7/11 that came out in 1977 the year before the A1 had Shutter Speed Priority, Aperture Priority and full auto exposure modes, but Minolta called it "Automatic Shutter-speed Compensation system (ASC)!" www.shutterbug.com/content/classic-cameras-minolta%E2%80%99s-xd-11-wait-%E2%80%99til-you-see-how-good-you-can-be-minolta-page-2#t174rzHUvb7wK3Jd.97 I still have my XD7 9, still going strong, it also had a vertical metal bladed smooth electronic shutter. Not by Porsche Design. It was Luigi Colani who did a design study with Canon and pretty much created Canon EOS ergonomics. 1D series have pretty much all the same buttons and dials after 32 years. Also AFAIK it had the first multipurpose control dial, something which every single camera has these days.

@@forsterl.stewart414 Sorry Forster Stewart, Minolta "XD,XD-7,XD-11" 1977, Canon "A1" 1978 & Canon "AE-1 Program" 1981, "AE-1" non Program did come out in 1976 but didn't have the Program feature, it only had Shutter priority or manual modes. The Minolta "XD,XD-7,XD-11" had Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority & Manual Modes on the dial, but if you set the Aperture to f22 (or your lens minimum) & Shutter to 125th, both labelled in green, you entered Automatic Shutter Speed Compensation (ACS) mode which is what Program mode is as it controlled the aperture & the shutter speed automatically with a slight bias towards the shutter speed.

I collect older film cameras and have three Canons: the FT QL, the A-1, and the EOS 3. It was really interesting to go and link the years of those cameras to the timeframes as you described them. It really brought those cameras to life for me. Another interesting post WWII camera company story is that of Zeiss Ikon. They had to come back to life despite their machinery being claimed by the Soviets in reparation to their camera makers for wartime destruction. By the way, I fell apart watching Tony's reaction to the Rebel commercial. Hilarious.

You guys are amazing. I've learned so much today, watching your Canon-Show and decided for myself to stick with Canon for now. There is kind of a Sony hype going on, but Canon lenses are used on them, needing a special mount..... it's definitely a plus having a compatible lens mount thru the years and models, I never realized that because it always fits. Having all the technical elements inside the Canon lens, another big point. You make me better understanding my gear and even more value it. Thanks for the video

Just a side note, you talked about wooden factories in Tokyo 11:00. The base I served on in the 80's, we worked in a wooden building. With writing in the rafters not too friendly towards Americans. But it was during this time, while in Japan, I bought my real 2 cameras, (Had been using the disposable cameras, sold everywhere.) Canon AE-1 and a T-7O. Both still work to this day. I found out that my T-70 with its digital readout and settings failed in my 1st climb on Mt. Fuji (too cold). Took my AE-1 on my next climb. Just got lost thinking about it.

Very interesting. I can tell that doing reports was Tony's favorite school activity. One small nit to pick, no mention of the Canon A1, which IIRC introduced the program "Pro" mode to SLRs, with the idea of making them much more approachable to novice shooters. Then the AE-1 Program brought it to the consumer level market.

I absolutely enjoyed the Canon history lesson. I am old enough to remember many of their film camera innovations. I agree with the others that you're on a roll and should do the same thing for the other manufacturers. It is always interesting to learn how some of the big photographic players got to where they are today. If I remember correctly, it was Kodak that actually invented the digital sensor. Kodak has obviously hit some bumps in the road and it is clear that some of the corporate direction decisions can make once profitable companies into financial disasters. Innovation seems to be the key especially when marketing to the "Gear Acquisition" people. As an aside, I was reminded of the two "Bobs" from the movie office space. Thanks for that "value-added" chuckle.

just found your channel and being a canon shooter since 1976, i had to see this video. just a couple thoughts, if i may. canon made the EX-Auto which was a shutter speed priority body with a proprietary lens mount that wasnt the FD. it was introduced in 1972 and was the first SLR i ever shot with in Junior HS for my yearbook. the AE-1 was my go to camera for my college newspaper and when i worked for Gannett News (publisher of USAToday). i added an F1n to the bag and carried 5 lenses (all f2 or faster except the 200 f2.8) and then left for the Air Force where they tried getting me to shoot with a Nikon F3. the next was the canon F1. you mentioned it was updated in 1981 and was virtually identical. you show the F1n but there are HUGE differences between the two. the original has the mechanical self timer lever and a fixed penta-prism housing without a hot (or cold) shoe. the F1n introduced Aperture Preferred automation with the interchangeable AE finder, Shutter Speed Priority with any of the several different winders/drives and used a combination mechanical/electrical shutter. i know that this is a moot point for this particular video, and maybe more detail oriented than what your intended audience is but i thought these were glossed over. ive enjoyed your videos so far, so keep at it! cheers

I bought my first canon SLR FT (ql) in a paris flea market for Rs 500(today less than 10$) with an FL 50/1.4. I still have it and it still works flawlessly though its fallen on mountainsides etc. Never had to service it over all the decades. Canon also concentrated a lot on the development of different lenses and actually the history of their lens design and versatility is why many of us still stay with canon. They are able to make very good lenses in both expensive and very reasonably priced categories. Hence they improve their camera models incrementally but know how to pair their lenses.

Hi Tony, Chelsea, A note from Black Magic sales about the new 4K Video Assist... The new Video Assist 4K by Black Magic brightness spec (not on the website): ----Thank you for contacting us. The display for the Video Assist 4K is 350 NITS. We don't include a sun hood with the unit but there may be third party manufacturers making some for it. I don't think a hood is necessary, but it's all up to the user. Best regards, Veronica Salas Technical Support Representative Blackmagic Design Inc. That's not a lot of brightness. LG

Love the old Canon FD Lenses. They have their problems, but you gotta love that you can get a 1.8 lens for under 50 bucks that has really great bokeh. Some of the highest quality images you can get on a budget!

~ Great podcast, thanks .... surprised the "workhorse" A1 didn't get a mention tho, this superb camera introduced me to Canon and photography in 1981. It function flawlessly for 25 yrs, especially with Kodachrome ... :)) Yep, I am that old.
