I just bought this camera a few days ago, and even though I don't have a lens, I watched every second of this video. I never watched a video that had so many self-plugs, and every single one of them was totally warranted. I will be coming back to this video and visiting your website many times.

Extremely good T&C presentation. I just added 6DMII to my Arsenal. Canon provide 2 online manuals (available to download on Canon website). One is 610 pages long (the main manual). The other (for wireless communication) is 170 pages long. This video basically saved you a whole year of reading. Well done to the good guys. And if you haven't yet bought SDP, do so fast.

Tony, I always enjoy you and your wife's videos. Just picked up a 6D Mark II, up from a 70D, which was up from a 20D, from a 35m Pentax ME Super. I am familiar with Canon, and with the 70D, the 6D Mark II was pretty familiar. Your video helped me re-confirm my knowledge of most of its features and help point out whats new for me over the 70d, without having to play with it for days to figure it out. I read a lot on the DR issue with the 6D Mark II. Considering i came from a crop sensor, this is still a huge improvement, all around. And coming from starting out on a 35mm film camera, i tend to set up my photo before i shoot more so then most people, and tend to not need to post edit as much. So my post "corrections" aren't so reliant on the cameras DR abilities. Again, thanks for taking the time to shoot this video, and you still did it, regardless of your less than enthusiastic opinion of the 6D Mark II. I picked up a 70-200 2.8 IS II, and im blown away by this lens and a Full Frame sensor.

I think tutorials like this one is where Tony really shines, his knowledge, good mood, and teaching skills all come together. As a long time teacher myself I would prefer if he also polished out the last remnants of sarcastic remarks (such as the one about the 1980's lcd screen, that's not beneficial to those who already purchased the camera) But, that would be nitpicking, I think Tony excels in his tutorials, it takes a lot to be this good! Bravo!

This is one of the best videos for anyone who bought a Canon 6d MKII. I upgraded and bought some good glass and in the last couple of years some other great cameras have been released. I like the weight of my 6dII and bought a Sony Alpha 7III with a new 24-105 lens and a metabones V for traveling. So I can use two systems and pretty happy. On black Friday got a get deal on a Canon 5DS-R so I can take 50 mega pixel or crop some landscape photos (half price from 2015). Having more options on site allows me to take some time lapse photos with my 6dII, great landscapes with the 5-Dsr and the Sony gives me the option for high dynamic range. With good Lee filters I'm set to take some great large format photos. Looking forward to take some great captures over the New Year period. Have recently updated your digital book, great work. I started with 2X2 format film camera Yoshica-d; have come a ling day in the last 50 years. These You-Tube videos are very informative for buying new gear and finding new ways to capture great photos. Keep up the good work...

Tony, thank you for such a detailed and super informative video on my new 6D MKii. I was using the original 6D and had a pretty good idea already of how to use it, but the information you presented was very helpful. I am a bit surprised at your enthusiasm for this camera since you panned it for it's "lack" of Dynamic Range and 4K video, but for someone who has been photographing for well over 30 years, and just came into the digital age just over two years ago, this camera does just fine for me. I make sure to expose as best as I can in camera anyway so if there are any flaws with the system, I can reduce or eliminate them with slight changes in post. Overall, though, I do appreciate you putting together this video as a companion to your books (I did by SDP by the way, great book!), so I trust what you have said here of course. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

I just bought this camera (it finally got a reasonable price point) as a companion to my venerable 5dMk2. This video was extremely helpful it doing the setup and learning the new features. I had waited for the Canon mirrorless options ... and was unenthused when they came out. I figure by the time Canon markets the camera they could already make today, but won't, I'll be deceased. So, I took a steal of a deal the 6dMk2. Thanks for this tutorial - it was a yeoman's piece of work.

Me as well... having a EOS 70D... I like it because the EF lenses fit on both.. and the battery is the same. IMO, mirrorless is not 'there' yet.... plus the lens incompatibility factor is not an incentive to switch.

For me, I think the biggest difference from the original 6D to the 6D Mark II(besides the articulated rear screen) is the AF system. Canon has added a new button located next to the shutter button to cycle through the various AF modes, and these modes can be added or removed via Menu, C.Fn II: Autofocus, page/subsection 8. I have only enabled Spot AF, 1 pt AF, and Zone AF. I have found the Large Zone AF and Auto selection AF to be useless. By only enabling certain modes, it is much quicker to cycle between the ones you use the most via this new AF selection button. Thanks for the video :-)

I am thinking the same - I have couple L lenses that really cannot perform fully on the APS body. According to DXOmark I would get almost double P-MP out of them on a 6D (they don't have the 6D2 yet). I know I could get better results by jumping brand but I am lazy. And I could get a used 5D3 but I love the tilt screen. So while I feel like this camera is a disappointment for what it could (should) have been, it still makes sense for me and my situation. Maybe I'll rent it for couple weeks to see and then make the decision.
@pianofinger
@pianofinger 7 жыл бұрын
Jan Strojil as a another commenter said my lenses are really shining now. I traded out a few apc lenses to afford what I wanted. So I have the Tamron 24-70 G2 as well as the 70-200 G2 and of course the cheap nifty 50. I love the quality that I am getting out of the camera. My focus speed is way better than before with my 50mm. This camera has made it hard to go back to an apsc camera. The difference really has been like night and day for low light shooting. Because of the dr issue i have also been made to shoot with the proper exposure which has only made me a better shooter.
@JanStrojil
@JanStrojil 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. One thing that is holding me back is the fact that all the focus points seem to be crammed in the middle. How much of an issue is that? I mostly shoot with the center one, but I do like to use the outliers for off center pictures of my kids.

Thanks Tony and Chelsea for taking the time to explain this for us, it's very much appreciated. I have watched many of your videos and they are now my "go to" so thumbs up. Your style and presentation skills are what helps set you apart, from the knowledge of course, but many experts make lousy teachers. I do own the 6DM2 having moved up from the 80D so I appreciate the honest comments about the camera. If I wanted a fully-featured full-frame camera and could afford it, yes, the 5DM4 of course, but as someone moving into full-frame censors this is a beautiful segway and allows me to use the better quality glass I've acquired and reap those benefits. So once again, thanks to you both and keep up the great work! Cheers from Aus. :)

In bulb timer settings they should also have an available option to have at the very least a 2 second delay to cut down on shake. Now the only way I can come up with a shutter delay is to go to the hassle of attaching an intervalometer.

thank you guys for this video. I have recently upgraded from a 60D to the 6DMKII and I love it. I was very shaken by your previous review and all the internet chatter about this camera. quite frankly I own the 6d2, love they way it performs, (again coming from a 60D here) but I still view it with great skepticism which is unfortunate for the money spent. as an amateur I was not willing to got through selling my canon kit and jumping brands because over the years I have bought good glass in prep for the full frame upgrade when it came. I'm looking forward to using this camera as an amateur and if I make the jump to pro I feel it will hold its own until I can afford a mk4 or to buy an 850 and lenses. as alway I appreciate what you guys do as educators love the book and look forward to more content.

Regarding video quality: I checked the settings was limited to 50fps or 25fps until I found in a completely unrelated place in the menu system that switched movie recording from PAL to NTSC. Then 60 (or 59.9) fps and 30 (29.9) fps are available. Regarding your 6Dmk2 review: I checked DXOMark for the dynamic range of this camera and the 7Dmk2 & 750D. They are all within 0.1EV of each other, with the 750D at 12EV, the 6Dmk2 at 11.9 and the 7Dmk2 at 11.8. So there isn't a lot between them. I have used the 7Dmk2 extensively over the last year or so, which is capable of some superb images, so the dynamic range can't be that bad. Could be better perhaps but OK-ish, and maybe you'd expect the newer 6Dmk2 to wipe the floor with the other two, but then there'd be no point in anyone buying the 5Dmk4! I also love the Olympus Micro 4/3 system, but given that ISO 200 is more like 800 on full frame (I've been reading your Buying Guide!) I find it hard to understand why you'd recommend the OMD EM1mk2 to beginners. Yeah you can fudge it into giving noiseless 80MP images but only if absolutely nothing moves during the image stacking process. The dynamic range of the EM-1mk2 is 12.8EV but surely the noise at higher ISOs than 200 compared to full frame or APS-C kind of negates the higher dynamic range, as recovered shadows will be noisier. In the long run, the huge range of Canon/Sigma/Tamron lenses esp the pro ones, count in favour of buying full frame. And the 6Dmk2 is cheaper than a new D850 and has the touchscreen tilty-flippy screen and Wi-Fi/GPS that are lacking on the D750 (which I would consider the 6Dmk2's nearest competitor.)

Hi, a little new to this. Was wondering if you could tell me what settings I should use for video, for the best results on this camera. Thanks!

Thank you Tony! I know this camera gets some bad reviews, but I get outstanding pictures with my EF lenses. I got it on sale for less than $1000 brand new. I know that I probably should be heading towards mirrorless, but I like a camera that is NOT so much like a computer and feels solid in my hands. Of course, I own more than one camera ( a mirrorless) and do not take this along for travel.

Thanks for this very detailed review. After my experiences talking with people, there is no question that they should watch these kinds of videos as part of their pre-buying research. DSLR's can be very expensive, and people should do more homework to prevent buyer's remorse that results from a lack of thinking when it comes to personal needs. Expensive learning. I was in the market for a full frame like the Mark II, and Tony is right that there are shortcomings to this body (ie: dynamic range). That's why it's not a $3,000.000 DSLR. The price of the Mark II has come down quite a bit as a result of many negative reviews, and there are several promotions going on to clear initial inventories. At some point, I would expect an expedited replacement (Mark III) with some upgrades - but if this body keeps going down in price, it will become a good buy. Canon, from a marketing standpoint, had to be careful in positioning the features of this camera vs its 5D full frame - obviously you don't want an entry level full frame eating into the 5D category and its high profit margins. But Nikon isn't waiting, either. With camera body upgrades coming fast and furious, many current, original 6D owners have decided to wait for the next 6D version, as their existing older bodies are doing just fine and producing great pictures because: they read the owner's manual thoroughly a couple times; they practised using the camera's many features to understand how they work; they perfected their techniques knowing how best to use the features, and; they focused on the results rather than just the technology. If you don't really need an entry level full frame all that urgently, wait for the inevitable price declines to get the best pricing. In the meantime, use some of your $$ for the better long term investment - L series lenses. Your 6D (whatever version) will love them !!

ISO Range setting at 57:00 - Useful because they say that the camera has poor dynamic range below 300 (actually 320). So set the minimal to ISO 300, and then you don't have to think about it.

OK, I am a little late to the 6D Mark II but I just bought a new one to play with as a diversion from the Nikon D850. Only have a 50mm f1.4 lens and am going to try to keep it that way but the digital back was pretty new to me and your video was simply excellent to get me up to speed ( I hate reading the manuals). Thanks as always for such great content.

Enjoyed these tips. Made some value add setting adjustments that I was unfamiliar with. Wish I had a larger glass budget. But I suppose most of us do. I just bought the Mark II in 2021 to give you an idea of this hobbyists hardware budget. A really nice upgrade from my 10yr old rebel which produced some decent images. Thank you for sharing.

Nice tutorial Tony. I had this camera for two weeks. Sold it because I was unsatisfied with IQ. I had better results with my old 5D mkII. AF points were cramped in the middle of the frame and really didn't make good use of them. It's good beginner FF camera though.
