The Canon R5 Mark II launches in just a few days on July 17 - and Tony Northrup (via CanonRumors.com) has the leaked specs! Well, hopefully they're accurate specs.
Here's what we think the R5 Mark II will look like. CanonRumors expects the price to be $3,999 (sdp.io/R52):
45 Megapixels
12 FPS stills with the mechanical shutter or 30 FPS stills with the electronic shutter
up to 8K at 60 FPS video (probably raw internal)
Eye-controlled autofocus point selection, like the Canon R3
No EVF blackout
Improved PixelShift for high-megapixel images
Some illuminated buttons
Autofocus to -8 EV
Better battery life
Shutter speed faster than 1/8000" with the electronic shutter
up to 16 stops of dynamic range... WHAT?? I talk about this a lot in the video
New IBIS modes.

I’m looking forward to some of the subtle enhancements seen in Canon’s recent offerings - improved battery life, no 30min record limit, reduced rolling shutter, the ability to select slower burst shooting (R5 in electronic shutter is either Single shot or full 20fps, nothing in between!), maybe a quicker way to switch between photo & video like the switch on R6 ii. I agree that for cameras to succeed in today’s market, the wireless connectivity needs to get MUCH faster and the app connection needs to be way more stable!

It’s a shame that a 2024 $4000 camera is not smart. I want computational photography capabilities that rival the iPhone 15 Pro’s. Particularly the ability to blend 100s of images pre and post clicking the shutter, masking in and out portions of each image to produce a single RAW with insane DR. No excuse for not having that in 2024 in any camera. I also want an iOS operating system in addition to all the smart features that you mentioned.

I want all the other aspects he mentioned, security, wifi that doesn’t suck, encryption, menu usability enhancements, before an additional 10 frames per second and slightly better autofocus. He’s mentioned this over and over and is correct. Why can’t we lock our camera, even something as simple as a button combo to unlock would be very welcome. Id be happy with power on, and hitting FN1 3 times and ok on the back 1 to unlock or whatever combo we want, ability to register the camera serial with the manufacturer and a authentication to unlock it if we forget what the combo was leaving it on a shelf for 6 months. This gear is very expensive and it’s insane we don’t have security aspects to prevent theft at this point.

Re the possibility of 16 stops with software - how is this "smartphone technology never before offered by Canon" different from the HDR mode on my 70D from 2013 where 3 different exposures are captured as fast as possible and combined in camera ? I am sure it is basically bracketing. But older cameras couldn't do those really high burst rates so you would have to either use a tripod or align them in post. I guess what Canon is doing here is using electronic shutter to get a burst of lossy images of different exposures and stacking them. Canon sensors generally aren't known to have ISO invariance so using really high ISO and dropping it down to normal would benefit them even more. Another option would just to take a bunch of underexposed images at really high shutter speeds to recover highlights, and add up the shadows to get a normal exposure. A third option, I heard Canon has the ability to expose each pixel for different lengths, but I doubt this will look good if there is any motion blur going on.

Not worth the upgrade for me. I’ve told people the current R5 competes with the Sony A1 and Sony people are offended. As someone who loves Sony as well, I tell people NOT to be offended just to know that most of you won’t notice the difference and neither will your clients at 45 vs 50 megapixels. Same is said for the Z9 and Z8. No one can tell the difference. You can’t tell the difference between stacked sensor vs non-stacked. And if you want to talk about rolling shutter, flicker and other things, just use the mechanical shutter and it eliminates that issue (and yes reduces the frame rate but no one cares). So these minor changes don’t mean anything to me. I might still get it because I need to update my back up camera and I could make this my primary and my current R5 my backup. But other than that, all these updates are non factors for me. And the R1 seems great, but the only thing that would interest me is if it’s 16 bit color depth.

About that Dynamic Range figure of 16? Almost certainly that's 'Video' dynamic range, not 'Still Image' dynamic range! The difference... Posted Still Image dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:1, where the black/shadow image data and noise data reach parity; i.e. image data and noise data are equal. Conversely, Posted Video dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:2, where the black/shadow noise data is *2 times* the image data. The reason?... In video we normally view a stream of image frames, and the human eye/brain interprets this as continuous. The effect is that the frames somewhat blur together, which helps to reduce the visual appearance of noise; we just don't perceive the noisiness as much. That's why video dynamic range is generally expressed as better than still image dynamic range on the same camera and in the same conditions.

4:33 Also they misuse the term EV. It should be LV. LV measures the light. EV is just the combination of the shutter speed and the aperture. With ISO 100 you should expose a specific LV value with the same EV value.
@Nanookian
@Nanookian Ай бұрын
See I’m not sure. Tony mentioned it’s a bad measure because of different lenses but I think that’s the point. It can do -8ev based on how much light the lens is gathering. Meaning it can work in darker environments if you have a faster lens. The measurement for effective AF is relative to the lens. Hence EV measurement and not LV.

6:04 A pixel doesn't store light. The well capacity is a measure of how much charge can be stored, which only indirectly is a measure of how much light a pixel has "captured." Consult your favorite solid-state physics or modern semiconductor devices textbook for a fuller discussion.
@michaels3003
@michaels3003 Ай бұрын
The pixel does not exist in the physical world. Values of four photo sensors (RGGB) are combined (computationally) to create a pixel data set in the file. So "pixel" is a name of a group of four light sensors plus their color filters.

The anti-theft sounds like a great idea on paper, and maybe it needs to start someplace, but how would it work in practice? You buy a new camera with some anti-theft device - some thief comes up and grabs it (or takes it from your car, whatever) then they run away. When they get home they open up the camera bag, realize they can't sell it, and throw it in the dumpster. You still don't have a camera and have to buy another one. Yes, it is nice to know that your images will not show up someplace but you are still going have the hassle of police reports, insurance claims, ordering a new camera etc. So... yes we need to get the ball rolling, but until all of the other non-anti-theft cameras are off the street EVERY camera is a target to get stolen. Maybe we could just focus on making it harder to sell stolen cameras?

Planning to upgrade to an R5mk2 from my R6 once the R5-2 is available. Agree on most of the usability features, but if they do add internal memory I hope they don't remove the 2nd card slot. If there's a problem with a memory card its easy to swap to another card... if there's a problem with internal memory, thats likely to be an expensive repair. Also if you fill up the internal memory you can't swap it out to a "new card" if you're storing photos redundantly. I do wish they'd add security features though... would definitely pay for that, heck they could make it a subscription service like lojack or something...

I disagree only in one point Tony: The suggestion for a fast internal memory, although it sounds great as an option, and it could be very useful if you’d forget to bring any card with you, it’s also a long term reliabilty issue. Flash memories wearout over time, and they tend to fail. You out of all people experienced it quite some times already and advocated that in your videos multiple times. If that would happen to the internal memory of the camera, it could render the camera usless. It would also be a quite expensive repair, compared to replacing a failed external CF Express or SD. It could also mean not having your camera as a professional for the time it’d need to be repaired. I’m guessing that’s the main reason most manufacturers avoid putting these kind of flash memories internally in their cameras. Other than that, I’m excited to see what’s going to be new in the R5 II, but I’m sticking with my R5 regardless. I bought it in January, knowing that the price drop was due to the II coming out soon, and at that time it was even rumored for that to be in May instead of July.

Except for a few specialists who spend half their day fighting for their royalties, nobody actually makes money for photography anymore. The only real revenue is from being a reviewer of equipment that everyone wants but nobody needs. Wedding photographers work for less than minimum wage if you calculate their actual hours and equipment costs. With so much high quality images for free and so many free hobby photographers, it is virtually impossible to start a traditional photography business. Plus cell phone images are amazing and the best camera is the one you have on you. The irony is that you now make a living reviewing equipment that does not earn a living.

What is canon planning on the video cameras? With Olympics in July maybe some of the prototypes will be used there. I am sure Chelsea and your daughter need a trip to Paris to see the Olympics, and you could go there to brush up on your French.

Tony, I agree, for 99+% of the photographers, the ever increasing mega pixel count is no longer very important, same with the crazy high frame rates. I think the manufacturers need to invest more to improve the other things that make photography a joyful experience. Larger, higher res, higher dynamic range (more immersive) EVF, and better LCD display. Continue to improve eye focus, which potentially allows faster and more intuitive AF point selection. Longer battery life Maybe employ M.2 (2230 or 2240) SSD technology in place of the 2nd memory card. Far cheaper AND faster memory. Maybe even develop a housing for using M.2 storage for both slots, in place of these very expensive storage media that are ONLY used on high-end cameras. Ability for the registered owner to remotely track, disable, and maybe even brick the camera, anytime the stolen camera is detectable on the Internet, to help deter future thief. Computational photography, ability to automatically stack images for dark scenes, improve resolution, etc. A larger, heavier, $4,000 camera + $3,000 of lenses should be able to easily outperform an

No, Nope, no, no way, not going to buy it. USB c 100 Mbps transfer speed to external Pcie drive is ages old speed but cameras can't even do that well. Wireless to a laptop or wireless external drive at even higher speeds should be the norm. Transferring to the cloud has proven to be a very bad thing given the theft of property rights the big media corps are doing. You should know encryption won't work unless the encryption is at camera level and then sent out. Then the data or media would have to stay unusable without your private key that would then have to decrypt locally on your hardware to keep them from stealing it all once it hits the cloud for storage, or you work on it using their remote services. ALSO - $5000 for a camera body is outrageous, especially knowing what kind of full editing PC or dog forbid a Mac we can get, so we don't have to use remote "cloud" servers to do the work, again giving full party control to big media commiting theft of private works. I mean where have you been sir? Your head is way up your own cloud service.

There are two commonly used DR measurements. One being what we actually get to use in the real world. He’s using that number against the wrong metric. He should be comparing 16-14 or so, not 11.85 or whatever.

The R5 has less than 12 stops DR? That’s disappointing, I believe my ancient EOS-20D had around 11 stops. I assumed nowadays such cameras standardized around 14/15 stops 🤷‍♂️ camera manufacturers continue to be dinosaurs with their lack of integration of smartphone like features. It’s like they have their heads in the sand, what’s the matter with them!?

With all the continued rumors still waiting for the announcement to determine if I will update my current R5 or just add the R5 II so I have two Canon RF mount bodies to use. I also own Sony and an A1 and A7RV but I don’t shoot video so not sure I want to continue to buy into RF mount without some significant differentiation in some way. Too bad no dual CFexpress type B. So my stills benchmark are the A1 and A7RV right now so what will it do better? Thank you and take care.

I'm looking to get an A7RV as my first mirrorless, coming from Canon DSLRs. I mostly want to continue using my EF lenses and the options Sony mount opens up for future lenses. How do you like the A7RV vs the R5?
@stevenwaldstein2249
@stevenwaldstein2249 Ай бұрын
@@MisterLongShot_Official The Canon EOS R5 and Sony A7RV are both fine cameras but the Sony and now the excellent 3rd party lens manufacturers offer a wider variety of lenses at many price points and can be more affordable. Color wise with Cobalt imaging software I can produce very similar colors for RAW images but the A7RV will have higher resolution for landscape and architecture and the Canon R5 is very nice for event shooting at 45 Mpixels. Just my opinion and experience. Take care.
