In July 2018 I made a video titled, "Don't buy a drone": • Don't buy a drone . It made sense at the time - drone laws had become completely draconian and drone technology was still very buggy. In the 16 months since I published that video, MUCH has changed. DJI's lobbyists have successfully loosened drone laws in both Canada and the US. In the US, you can now automatically get approval to fly in controlled airspace, even if you're an amateur without your Part 107! The DJI Go app now is must less restrictive and lets you fly closer to airports (it used to completely prevent you from taking off). Drones like the Mavic 2 Zoom (my favorite) have also become smaller, quieter, and less expensive. Whether you shoot stills or video, a drone might now be the very best value for a camera.

Even though they’ve changed the restrictions on where you can fly, giving users greater opportunities, one thing has not changed. If you plan on using any of your images for commercial purposes, you need a license. That applies to photos and videos you’re selling directly, or taking photos of things you’re going to sell (a house, for instance). Even applies to taking an aerial photo of your business (even your church! 😐) and putting that photo on your website or Facebook page, etc... any commercial use of the photo. This info came to me from an instructor that teaches a course to help people pass the FAA exam.

If anyone is on a budget and can’t afford dji here’s a few good alternatives: 1) husban zino (normal or pro) 4k gps drone, cheapest good 4k drone on the market. The pro version just came out and can fly a little further. 2) fimi x8 se. better camera than the zino, costs a little bit more but still under the $500 mark. I believe it’s the exact same Sony camera and gimbal that’s in the mavic 1. But half the price. The mavic has front forward sensors but that’s all and they don’t work in lots of the different modes so is it worth twice the price of the fimi I don’t think so. 3) autel evo. The famous orange drone. Beautiful drone, works great, often compared to the mavic 2 as the best alternative. Not quite as good as a mavic 2 but better than a mavic 1 easily. Could call it a 1.75 if you wanted to. It does shoot 4k 60fps probably it’s biggest selling feature other than the no fly zone issue thing all dji drones have. 4) mavic mini. Ok this one is dji but I’m throwing it on the budget friendly list bc that’s what it is. And the 249g opens up some fun legal gray areas. Will have to wait and see how the courts rule but theoretically might be able to fly it in a lot of new places. Only big downside I can think of is it’s not 4k. At best isles 2.7k. But for hobbyists or KZfaq that maybe enough. Honorable mentions: parrot anafi, and mavic air

Great video Tony . I can also add to another positive aspect of this Mavic 2 Zoom . I have repaired some of these units and the gimbal design is just awesome . Very robust with what I believe to be a built in point of failure . A good point of failure . The gimbal plate will fail before the gimbal . The replacement part cost only $50.0 as opposed to the Gimabl and Camera assembly costing upwards of $350.0 . Thank you DJI ! Not to mention that unadvertised pan feature . Way to step to the plate DJI .

Years ago I used ladders and pole cams to get shots but now a flying camera 10x better. Sometime you only need to fly at 20ft to achieve a significant improvement in composition. Often I send it up just to get the lay of the land like a periscope, especially to find Fall colors. Send it over a calm lake for a reflection shot and you will be sold.

So, I took my Mavic Mini out for its maiden flight today and everything that Tony says from 8:55 rings true. I haven't had something make me smile this much in a while. It's quite astonishing when you think about it, considering that there isn't much of a learning curve (not for the Mavic Mini anyway) and how cheap it is.

Actually you were somewhat able to “change the relationship between your foreground and background” with the phantom 4 pro photo mode, just move back and crop in! It’s not optimal, but it will give you a more compressed look between the foreground and background. Move in close and fill the frame will make the background look somewhat far from the foreground, but use that extra resolution and crop from a distance for compression... same thing applies with video, switch the 4K HQ on the Mavic 2 pro - it ends up being a similar look, but it doesn’t go as wide as the Zoom in full fov.

I have been watching your videos for the last couple years as I’ve gotten back into still photography. They have helped me immeasurably. I’m now planning to buy my first drone (well, second - my first was a cheap Costco drone that I stuck in a tree the 3rd time out - lesson learned). I’ve decided to not buy another cheepy and save for one that will meet my needs - mainly, a good camera. Which drone are you recommending right now for someone in my situation that wants a drone that will meet my needs for a while, but won’t break the bank (e.g. under $1000)? Also, what specks are the most important to you as an aerial photographer (drone, camera). Thanks!

Glad to hear the laws are getting more lenient. Also agree that drone footage adds a lot of production value. However, not every photographer needs one. You have to consider how often you'll actually use it, and what ROI you'll get from the investment of the equipment, training, and so on. You can always subcontract out that portion of a job to someone who specializes in drone work.

They will make some silent drones in the future, the design is already there, with owl wings. Owls are completely silent when they fly due to very intricate wing design with tiny feathers. It has been patented for computer fans, and is already marketed, dunno if they can make it for drones. The technology is here, it's just 3D printing with a higher precision, but the patent may be blocking the transfer of technology to drones.

Woah, woah, woah... Recreational pilots were always able to fly within 5 miles of an airport. All you had to do was call the tower. They would take down your registration number, your location, highest altitude you planned to fly at, start time, and stop time, and phone number. Now it's more restrictive, as the LAANC vendors won't let you fly above certain altitudes (below 400 feet), whereas before you could, and now you can't talk with ATCT to override those restrictions.

Yeah, I feel like some compromise can be reached. I flew my Mavic 2 at a wedding recently, and kept enough distance that the guests couldn't hear it, and still got some good shots. I feel like if drone operators are considerate, they could absolutely be used in a way that didn't bother other park visitors or wildlife. How about the update regime on DJI Drones, has that changed? Or do you need to update before each flight if you have not flown in a week or two?

FWIW I always fire up the drone the night before I plan to use it, make sure that it's up to date, and that it still flies. Never start an update right before you need to use it, though... sometimes updates break stuff.

Tony a usefull note, the 249gram will also apply in the EU next year, although I do think it will apply to drones without a camera.

Well, the more drone manufacturer 's that arise the lower the prices which I think will directly motivate enthusiast to finally take the plunge and purchase one.
