Pole Barn Mistake Fix? | We Messed Up!

BIG Building mistake! Building a pole barn is not always easy. We made a big mistake with our truss measurements. We ordered trusses for an inside measurement of 40'. We should have ordered trusses for an inside measurement of 29' 1" so our trusses would be set on the tops of the post with an outside diameter of 30'. Follow us through this video as we realize what we did wrong. Watch each week and see how we overcome this mistake! We are showing how it is to really build a pole barn ourselves. We make mistakes and show them so hopefully, people can learn from us.

If you are not making mistakes then you are not working. Trying new projects there is always a learning curve. Next time you will know and now that you video this many others will not make this mistake so you are serving all the viewers by giving this knowledge to them. Keep on keeping on Tony.

If you do not set those trusses directly on top of those posts you have completely changed the load rating of that roof. I know you are trying to make it work but it is never too late to stop doing the wrong thing and do the right thing. Ask any engineer or for that matter your code compliance guy in your area. You WILL look back one day and regret not doing this right. It's a lifetime investment. So your whole roof is rated by those screws, not the strength of sitting on top of a 6x6? I'm not trying to criticize just speak from installing hundreds of these.

I understand what you are trying to say, but we have not done anything to be criticized about. You made an assumption without the benefits of knowing everything. The barn roof will be here long after we are gone. It will make sense as the videos go on. Trusses set on headers every day.

Not arguing or criticizing. Half day (or even full day) of fix is the right thing to do. I've lived a lifetime with eyesores and mistakes that would have taken .0001% if the time to correct. But it comes down to...it's your project. At least you're being transparent. Critics are usually hesitant to share in your pain...they just blather instead.

Yes sir. I have some more supports coming, but the overall fix was not bad. I had to put boards up there anyway. I just had to go with two by tens.

Tony, Tonya is a very good operator. She takes her time, I've seen maybe one small goof however she squared it away quickly. And with the pot roast, She's definitely a keeper. "YOU GO GIRL".

A better pole barn should start by following a drawing. I really don’t like unsupported headers.

I am not sure if your comment was meant to be as smug as it sounds, but it comes across as you have never made a mistake while building something. I hope that is not the way you meant it. All you have seen is the header going up. Also, If you are as experienced as you imply, you know things don't always go to drawings. A builder has to adapt, modify and overcome. I have a good deal of engineering experience and I have no concerns with how strong the barn will be. Once you see my solution, you will understand. I wish you the best.

Thank you. I found it setting in a field. It is 51 years old and had been sitting for years. A few new parts with work, and it is pretty reliable. I don't think I would have tried this project without the crane truck. I may go through it at some point just for fun.

You need to thru bolt those headers and maybe add some I believe they are called jack studs under those headers

The GRK screws are rated to hold, but it is not done yet. I have something in mine. 👍

That looks like a cobble job. I would never put wood posts in the ground either. Mine are all rotted off and door headers are sagging down. Its a disaster!

Fast2K protects the post in the ground. They will last a lifetime. I wish you the best.

why couldnt yall of just cut the truss L shaped post anchor and slid them in 5.5 inches on each side and rewelded-was the truss engineered??-could of re engineered aka bush fixed-if it aint gettin inspected its anything goes
