Improving the success of collected Yamadori Part 2

I have been using this technique now for over ten years and I have finally decided to share what I have learned in these videos. The technique is known as ‘sweating’ and is used extensively in arboretorial circles. I use for the following species: Cratageus, Prunus, and most of the Rosaceae family, do not use on evergreen species.
I collect trees with as much root as possible, but I have put roots on trees that have not had any.
Follow this procedure and your success rate in establishing your freshly collected yamadori will improve immeasurably.
Collect as much root as possible
Clear as much mountain soil but do not wash the roots
Use the soil mix as shown below
Clean cut the major roots as close to the trunk without spoiling the nebari
Place the tree in the smallest container possible
Ensure that the tree is well packed in the container
Wire the tree securely in the pot
Make sure that the cut branches are clean and NOT SEALED
Saturate the soil
Pile fresh sphagnum moss on the surface of the container
Wrap the whole tree in a VERY large black plastic bag
Place in a sunny position as the tree MUST GET HOT
Humidity in the bag must be high at all times, mist spray daily
After two or three weeks new buds will appear particularly around the cuts
Ensure that they do not touch the sides of the bag.
When the new shoots reach 5cm or 2” remove from the bag and protect from cold and wind, mist spray daily and keep out of direct sunlight.
Keep watch for the new shoots hardening off, then you can feed with a very diluted solution; do not work the tree for the first 12 months.
Good luck, please do not copy the text, and share the link freely.

Thanks Tony! I have a question: if it's in the garage then there's no light at all getting through-- will it still bud then? Also, what do you think is the optimum temperature for inside the bag, roughly? If I leave it outdoors here in Madrid it will cook the tree and roots so I will have to find the right place to keep it (and yes my partner won't forgive me if it's in the house or on the patio 😉

I did this immediately after watching a little while back and iv had somewhat success..Just wandering when it’s ok to remove the bag? I keep getting lots of lovely growth with the bag on but it goes brown and shrivels when I remove it. Do I need to wait till the growth is strong?

Sounds like a great technique. Do you know if this would work for European oaks? Though I'm a bit afraid to apply it since the bench on my balcony gets quite a bit of wind and the bag might break the branches.

Hey, hope you noticed yourself as its been months since you asked. If click read more in Tony's description under the video he writes "When the new shoots reach 5cm or 2” remove from the bag and protect from cold and wind, mist spray daily and keep out of direct sunlight." So it stays in the bag for as long as it takes the new shoots to reach 5cm.

Hi Tony, thanks for your video. I have two questions. 1. Would you recommend this “bag” technique on pine trees? 2 . I have colected several pine trees a month ago. Potted them pretty much as you described in your first video. Kept them in shade mostly. Is it to late to apply “bag’ technique now? Thank you

What fungicide or treatment are you using? how to do with these moisture-sensitive species? Thank you!

@@TonyTickle Yes, I do this very day, but the disease don't stop. Prunus are sensitive to a lot of problems when the air is to humid. For some spicies, this technic seems difficult without the help of the appropriate fungicide. But I really don't know which one to choose. If you have any products names, i would be glad! Sorry for my english! 😉

That's all good but... how long should a yamadori tree stay in the bag? What is the aftercare when You remove it from that bag? Isn't is a problem if a tree has a small amount of roots during collection? Last year I treated one of my collected hawt horns in that manner, it "sweated" beautifully giving a lots of fresh, green leaves but when I took it out after 2-3 weeks I kept in the same place (warm, sunny, dry) and it died in 3-4 months. I think I should've kept it in high humidity environment and that was the crucial part of aftercare. Nevertheless - it works wonders, but I am not sure if natural methods aren't better for a health and sustainable growth of a tree? best regards!
@tobiaszdansky4544
@tobiaszdansky4544 3 жыл бұрын
Late reply, but... With this technique it's important with baby steps. You can also start with a thick black bag. Then when buds start to open you replace the black bag with a transparent bag, letting sunlight in. But not direct sunlight. When you remove that bag you still want to keep it out of strong sun.

@@TonyTickle I think I understood what you mean. It surprises me a little, since light is normally also a factor in plant growth. But a bonsai friend of mine did it like you did and it worked for him too. Thank you for responding to my comment again. I am 60 years old and had my last English lesson in 1977 so it is not so easy to understand everything that was said. In any case, I find your method interesting. I would never have had the idea of working with a black cover. All the best from Germany.
