I want to do that with my smoking champ I'm afraid of voiding the warranty, though. I do have a meat and ambient probe,in the meantime. Thanks 4 the video!

I did the modifacation like you had done,,,, along with the temp gauges. Do you like lump charcoal better than regular Kingsford charc.

Hi Frank! Awesome! I'm glad it's working out for you. As for Lump vs Kingsford, it really depends. I've done many slow and low cooks using nothing but kingsford charcoal and it works great, much easier to manage temp, but less flavor. If I'm going to burn wood, I either start with a bed of lump to get things going or I'll just use wood only. I rarely do long cooks with lump only. If I'm doing low temp barbequing directly over the coals but with coals set low, like I do in my Oklahoma Joe's Judge, I go with lump coal. For grilling at high temp, I typically go with Kingsford Charcoal. It's something you gotta experiment with to see what works best for the situation but I really do use all about equally. I hope that helps!

Would it be okay to use the lava lock around the gauge on the inside of the grill hood.

I just bought a temp gauge. It's a little different, but has a similar shape. Do you think it'd be okay to just make a small drill hole for the probe, instead of making a wide hole for the bigger part closer to the gauge?

You can certainly give it a try. I'm wondering how you'd secure the probe. Is it threaded? Or would you leave it loose?

@@TonyToneBBQ I had to take another look at it. I guess mine goes from probe to threaded a little more than halfway up, but the threaded part is only a little bigger than the probe, whereas yours there's more of a difference. For some reason I was picturing a third component, but now I see that you only drilled as big as the threaded part, which is what I'll have to do. I'm pretty new to grilling, so my question was also a 'How do these temp gauges work?' kind of thing lol. Wasn't sure if [what I was referring to as] the probe was the only thing that needed to be exposed to the heat, or if it was necessary to get closer, so to speak. But yea, I should be good now. I'm pretty much going to do what you did, but adjust for the minor differences of the temp gauge. Thanks!
