And I don’t want to be that arm chair mechanic either, but by spaying a dump load in before cranking will this not kill the battery faster 🤷‍♂️ You have a massive load on the battery/started when it’s trying to fire on the wrong stroke, like pre ignition. I don’t use either much but when I do I try spray as close to the head as I can and spray squirts when cranking,
@kerryharrell8821
@kerryharrell8821 Жыл бұрын
spraying through the filter works fine, it also prevents the motor from taking too much ether at once and blowing up. I've been driving truck for 30 years and that's how you start old school truck diesels when really cold. stand on the running board of your old pete with ether in one hand and ignition in the other, crank while spraying the air filter. thankfully I didn't have to do it often, but no one is going to disassemble the air filter on a semi when it's 20 below zero Fahrenheit

@@highostablegarage bro who would be stupid enough to remove a grid heater?! 😂 also the ford obviously needs live support lol . that’s it’s whole purpose of a grid heater is to heat up the air for starting , also I did remove mine, and posted a video about it, then put it back on, all it does is kill your batteries , mine still started right up though without it after 5 seconds
@jlh55
@jlh55 Жыл бұрын
Keep a handheld propane bottle torch and take the breath lid off and put some heat right down the intake and get some heat and hot air in the engine, for engines without glow plugs, there are many cold start tricks, after years of starting diesels without a place to plug the block heater in and no glow plugs, we've let them trucks run day and night on locations without a generator or any a/c to plug them in
@highostablegarage

I’ve heard that before, no uncommon for the old trucks to have a million idle hours haha 😂
@jlh55
@jlh55 Жыл бұрын
@@highostablegarage well when I was rigging up in the patch we'd leave our rig up trucks running on location, because those trucks had to go from before daylight to after dark, getting those big rigs moved and rigged back up, and another reason I've seen those trucks brakes frozen up and if you get lucky and get it running you can't move it with all the brakes frozen, so we'd leave them run with the brakes off those heavy trucks weren't going to roll away on those gravel locations we blocked them anyway, and we put alcohol in the air tanks to keep the lines from freezing up

Why don't you go to change out the glow plugs since that truck looks like it's an IDI most likely a 7.3 or 6.9 IDI they're very easy to change and then you can bypass the glow plug controller and do a push button to preheat it for 10 to 20 seconds that's what I do online either if you read the visor tells you Full Throttle or anything below 20° half dot or anything below 60 or 70 and you may want to go ahead and put two new batteries on it cuz that thing's cranking real slow that's part of reason why it won't start

I mean i guess even though starting fluid combusts easier than diesel or gas since it has a much lower octane rating that either fuel, It’s still considered a cold start because of the other variables you mentioned. Honestly, and i could be wrong but i believe Diesel is quite a bit lower octane than gas so perhaps it’s a similar octane rating to starting fluid? To be honest, though, I would say it’s more impressive to see a diesel engine being cold started vs a gas engine especially when it’s old enough to not have glow plugs. Also, I don’t know the specifics, but I would have to think since diesels are compression ignition, when its really cold out its that much harder to get the fuel to combust vs just having a spark to cause combustion in a gas engine. I’m assuming that has something to do with the density of the fuel and the air? If you crank a carbureted gas engine too long, it could flood, I’m not saying you flooded it cause obviously it fired off a couple times, but if you just kept cranking it assuming the starter wouldn’t burn up and you have enough battery juice would it eventually start? maybe even it was turning over slowly also?

6.9s had an issue with the block heaters cracking the blocks, depending on your casting number plugging it in can ruin the engine, I’m not sure the number on this engine so I’ve never risked it

@@highostablegarage Lots of room under the hood you can use a recirculating coolant heater. Easy to install & takes much less time to heat up than a conventional block heater. If the glow plugs are good that truck would start easily with a recirculating heater.

I’m pretty sure the oil has nothing to do with it as the oil in the pan doesn’t come into direct contact to anything rotating besides the pump which won’t lug down the whole engine, also the film of oil on everything from the last time it ran really wouldn’t either, the batteries are most likely just freezing. On another note I’m betting if you actually used the glow plugs it would’ve fired right off, I had one of those old fords, it was a powerstroke not an idi but that doesn’t change my point that if the glow plug controller doesn’t work it’s a simple matter of wiring a button on the interior to the solenoid, literally exactly the same as the process with the button you have for the starter, if memory serves it even the same part, but anyway just hold the glow plug button for like 30 seconds before starting it and then there you go.

The pump is gear drive, same principle and drinking water or a triple thick milkshake through a straw, resistance to flow can be a crazy drag when cold

@venialgaming4295 Жыл бұрын
@@highostablegarage Yes but my point was the starter has enough of a mechanical advantage for it to not take effect, for example do you notice any power increase when moving to thinner oils or vise versa? I doubt it because when the oil pump put into more stressful situations like thicker oil or higher rpm they produce more pressure, they don't lug down the engine to a anywhere near noticeable degree. And besides my bigger point was fix your glow plugs if they're broken, it'll make everything easier.
