This film - "Kiss Me, Kate" - is terrific fun from start to finish, but this is my favorite part. If you haven't seen it, you should! Really a great classic musical comedy.
@robertwiegman14 жыл бұрын
R. Scougal I agree. It should be rated 4 stars all over the place but typically only gets 3.5. That's just baloney. It and Silk Stockings are two of the best that are underrated. Kiss Me Kate is better than Meet Me in St. Louis, The Music Man, etc.

My grandma always hated that they never showed her feet at 3:00. She said at her live performances she was known for moving her feet that fast and moving slowly and willowy above the waist at the same time, and it was a shame they didn't do a full body shot of that there!
@RToni7 жыл бұрын
I think everytime the same when I see that scene. I want see the her feet/shoes
@AxelQC7 жыл бұрын
That's why she dances on the furniture.
@jackanthony9766 жыл бұрын
I think one reason they didn't do a full body shot at 3.00 is because MGM knew they were making one of the first films shot in 3-D and so that were trying to have Ann seem as though she was dancing right into the camera and right into the audience hence the facial close up. I saw the film in 3-D in a movie theatre and it did seem that she was heading right into your lap with her fan at this part of the number starting at 3:00. It was awesome. However, without the 3-D version it doesn't make any sense to not show her feet.
@laurenjamieson84115 жыл бұрын
I agree. They should have shown the full body shot.
@Zoras884 жыл бұрын
Well you also have to realize that no one wanted to see sweaty feet. It was too darn hot for them to show her tapdancing skills that close.

Flawless talent from Ann Miller, Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel. Keenan Wynn, with the glorious spoof by Cole Porter " The Taming of the Shrew". How could it be better? Matchless dance sequeneces with Bob Fosse and Hermes Pan and the Daliesque scenes and costumes made this the best Broaway musical ever (except for Oklahoma) Pirates of Penzance, an equally glorious musical, went from Central Park to Hollywood.

I think Kiss Me Kate is at the top of movie musicals. Doesn't run out of steam like so many other movies. Cole Porter wrote a thoroughly entertaining play and Howard Keel did an excellent job carrying the movie. This and Silk Stockings are underrated.

Her spinning and navigation of the small space cluttered with furniture to knock over, the coffee table and narrow ledge and arm of the couch she balances and hot-foots across -puts to shame any modern-day 'star' performer who can still find a way to wipe out, step off the ledge of a vast wide stage space - or trip on stairs - this puts 'em all to shame. The talent of this golden era makes ours look pathetic.

and another thing musst be said compare with movies/musicals and choreography compared to those classic... today it would be a few steps one move... CUT - another camera Angle... back then... they have long sequences /choreography without any cut.
@jackjules75528 ай бұрын
It wasn't easy. According to Ann, many retakes were required for this number as Ann did manage to knock over or hit a piece of furniture or hit someone accidentally. Ann even managed to get her tap shoe ""accidentally" caught in Kathryn Grayson's wig, causing Miss Grayson's wig to go flying across the room during the take.

It's interesting to know that when she was 13 she became a showgirl at a jazz bar due to the fact she looked older than her age (she said she was 18). She's so tantalising to watch, you can see her experience and talent shine through. One hot momma indeed.

This was actually filmed in 3D. Not that cheesy red-green 3D like Bwana-Devil, but polarization separation, like in the film "Gravity". You cannot get that on (most) TVs. The bit where Ann is dancing on the coffee table in front of three mirrors has to be seen in 3D to be appreciated. Also, where she throws a garter directly at the camera. The whole film is full of bits, like fire breathers and jugglers, that need to be seen in 3D to be appreciated. Because it was filmed using polarization separation, either reel, left or right, makes a perfectly good 2D reel.

@esmeephillips58883 жыл бұрын
You know about her claim to have invented panty hose? On 'I've Got to Hear That Beat' (in 'Small Town Girl') Busby Berkeley would not let her stop when her feet bled because she would have to change her stockings. They were the most important part of her wardrobe and needed precision adjustment, which he said would take too much time.

Now imagine this on a big screen in 3D ! Ann is 30 feet tall and appears to jump out of the screen at you as she dances around on the furniture. The 3D prints are hard to find (most in bad shape) and there are very few old movie theaters that show revivals unless you are lucky enough to live in a big city. And Ann was at her absolute best (was she ever really bad?) .
