Yes, OMG! Sometimes it is seriously too overwhelming - ESPECIALLY when you are a slow gamer like me! I really take my time with RPGs...so it's hard to keep up! I try to play something new, then something old, etc etc.

For two years I'm working on my games backlog and I haven't finished it yet. I agree, there are "too many" videogames out there if you want to play them all. Good thing is though, being "picky" also means to define your own taste, your niché within. I believe it's great, because we dive deeper into the discussion of what good videogames are, what defines them, why those are special. It opens up the discussion about videogame culture: The themes, do's & don't, topics, leitmotifs, characters etc. I think diversity is a good development, it urges us also to think about purchase games mindful, and not just out of the collector's perspective.

Untouchaable I guess the solution is when there is so much overwhelm, just purely focus on the games that personally give you real enjoyment otherwise you'll just be so overwhelmed you'll not want to play any. Better to really focus on a game you love then just casually play lots.

Yeah but I think it's more down to lack of fanboyism, we usually grow up with 1 console but when you can afford multiple you buy all consoles and all games. There's advantages and disadvantages to having multiple consoles. My advice would be pick one and play that console.

Yeah, I can really relate. I want to be able to play and review *every* RPG eventually, but I think that I'll have to settle. Because while I can keep up that every-two-weeks mad dash for a little while, there's no way I can make up all that lost ground. But I think I'm going to have a hell of a good time trying! I think that the way that I've been pacing myself recently though is by what I can find in the wild, or what I already happen to own. But it's tough, there are so many classics I haven't played, so many games that are getting praise that I can't afford... And then, where's the space for it all? I fear the day I need to consider curating my collection, because right now, I just want to love them all! :)

I was thinking this exact same thing the other day! Not just with new games coming out, but the fact that I can go and buy up all the old school games that I missed out on. Now I feel this artificial pressure to finish them and so I can move on to the next. It definitely takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it.

Too many games isn't a problem in itself but, as someone who wishes I could bend time and space to play every single great game in existence, it is completely overwhelming. I miss the days when the games I really wanted to play would trickle out slowly with enough time for me to complete each one before moving onto another. Last generation I already started to feel the overwhelm and now it is just impossible to keep up. In the last 5 years I've started so many games and never finished them because my attention span is getting lower and lower. The best solution I've found for this modern predicament is to just stick with one (or a few) game(s) at a time and really immerse myself in it until I'm finished with it. That way it feels like the good old days and I enjoy one game without scattering my attention into so many. Just have to give up trying to play them all, discern which ones I REALLY want to play, let some good ones go, and be monogamous with one at a time.

It's like you said - you need to be picky about what you want to buy and what you want to play etc. If you don't collect, it's as simple as that - just find what you really enjoy, and buy a new game when you're done with what you have. For collectors, there's of course going to be 'must-have' titles which you'll want to own, but even myself, I find that I have most of the stuff I really want now, and I'm going for quality over quantity. Because if I tried to collect it all... well, that would be impossible :')

There are so many games that I want to play that I've created a list of just games I CAN'T miss. Even that list is so big, it'll be literally impossible for me to play them all given the rate I play these days. When I play games now, I sort of feel like I need to plow through the story (and not take time exploring) just so I can move onto the next experience the next game offers. You have to continually remind yourself to slow down and as HCG mentioned, be more selective with your time.

I honestly think there are a lot. Really been trying to restrict myself when it comes to buying because not just money, but time and my backlog. I even have some games that I've never even touched once. I definitely don't have the same time I used when I was younger and could just spend all my free time playing games. It's hard where there is a lot you want that's out there, but have to look at it realistically of if you'll play it right away and leave other games behind (again and again), or wait to get it later so that you can focus on your backlog and deal with many of your friends talking about and playing the newest game and you're not.

I don't feel so bad now about only playing like, 4 games a year. I used to think I was kind of missing out by spending so much time enjoying FIFA, NHL, or MLB the show, but it seems that other gamers feel a bit overwhelmed and sometimes try to rush through games to get to the next. So yeah, slow down guys. Maybe not to my level...but yeah.

It's definitely a great time to be a fan of video games. That said, I have to really limit my new game purchases. Lately I have been buying a lot of exclusive OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games, more for collecting than playing. I know that's not a great thing, but it's what I am doing lately. In terms of games I am playing I feel like I am always missing something. I just recently finished the 2013 Tomb Raider (loved it). I have so many games I am planning to get to. I also like to play some multiplayer. Still playing Halo 5, playing Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 and I want to try and play some more Rainbow Six Siege. Plus there are so many games coming out I want to play. Quantum Break just hit, Battleborn is on the way and so is Doom. I only own the One out of the current gen consoles, but I also have a 3DS (in addition to all of my older consoles). My backlog is literally enormous. I could stop buying games for a couple years and I wouldn't be bored. Seriously.

I am an artist so the only things I like are creative/artistic. Fine art, literature, movies, games and music. Games are are pretty young art form compared to other genres. Imagine catching up to 5000 year of literature and music, and a hundred + years of movies. That is one reason why I don't try to collect all things, only the things I really like I will buy very cheap from Amazon. Still got so much old art to check out, while new things get released every single day. Basically in art I think there's too much saturation. Too much bad art/products get made and less good quality ones. Because it's all subjective and you can't stop someone from letting them express themselves creatively. Like with youtube, too many useless videos and a couple nice ones. So just got to search realy good to find those few pearls. Sometimes I wish I could stop time for a second and say 'stop creating things for some years so I have time to catch up'. But discovering great new things is always a great feeling. That feeling of 'wow I never heard or seen that before!'.

For me personally, this isn't the fastest and most overwhelming time in gaming. I'm more into multi-player games, and I'm happy there always seems to be some indie game or something every couple weeks, but it's been a while since there's been one major release or so many releases that I could have friends over for hours and still have something we need to play. It always feels like when friends come over, there's always one small indie thing I have to try with them, and after that it's "What do you want to play now?" "I don't know... ummm..." It's a shame that the Wii U doesn't have that many games. There needs to be a Nintendo Land 2.

Good question mate. I don't think there are too many games. I think it's just we have the money to buy them these days. Back as a kid there were still hundreds of game sto choose from but we only got them at xmas and birthdays. So when we got a game we played it to death. These days I get a game, and if it's not totally gripping it will last a couple of days, or weeks, and then you move on. I don't think we put the time in any more. Also, games are built to be completed these days. Old school games were damn impossible to beat ha ha! ;)

I think the concept of too many games is a double edged sword. The fact that there are too many games available is good with regards to keeping the market and diverse and besides a little bit competition will help an industry instead of hinder it. Your absolutely right, people just need to be a little bit picky when it comes to buying their games because its unfathomable to think you can play everything that gets released in this day and age. I'm kind of held back buying new released this year. I haven't bought anything in 2016 and at the rate we're going it looks like star ocean 5 and final fantasy XV may be the only titles I may buy this year. Hopefully even with the mass amount of games being released people will have the mentality that quality>quantity but I certainly hope we don't reach a point where the market becomes too saturated that it ultimately harms the video game industry.

I'm sure theres a language that has a word for the specific feeling you have when you walk into a library, see all the books and realise no human, let alone you, will read all of them in their lifetime. I guess the Japanese word Tsundoku covers that ... but its also the oppressive feeling of realising how short your life is, too. I want to embrace all of life, know everything, know everyone and yet it is impossible, and we have to make choices. Its like standing at the edge of an AT field and realising the human instrumentality project is on the other side, and knowing neither side is the right one.

What you said in the beginning will make this video relevant forever. More games than ever before indeed. Time Management and personal preference mixed with a bit of motivation a massive backlog can be worked through. Daunting at times but fun as hell. I like to pass the controller with a friend to test all my new titles and we can rip it apart and give it our own stamp of approval or trade it in. I bought suikoden 2 this summer for a very good price. But I'm okay not jumping on it immediately. Its there when I'm ready and always will be. I can easily take a week off and watch space related shows and get lost in them without feeling bad. Buy for life not for the week. And when 80 year old finally throws in Ocarina of TIme for the first time ever it will still be just as fun as if you were 20 doing the same thing.

Completely agree. Also, games are on average a lot longer than they used to be. There's also the problem where you wanna play the newest game in a series but feel the need to play all the entries before to really understand everything. Like, Yakuza 5 looks really cool but I'm probably never gonna play it because i would feel the need to play 1-4 first.

so funny that you are mentioning it johny. from gamer perspective that enjoy gaming from NES era, i find recent games are good in term of visual presentation but lacking depth in their gameplay and fun factor. for example assassin creed, shadow of mordor are the same identical type of games with different packaging. it plays the same way with little gimmicks here and there. that is when gaming world becoming oversaturated with visually good games but lacking any depth. fortunately there are still games with outstanding quality in both visual and indepth gameplay such as Souls series and Bloodborne. however such series becoming scarce and scarce as fun games such as Im@s series would never left japan shore. because of that i believe there is nothing wrong for us gamers to be picky as we need to play games that we truly like instead following hype train that were created by advertisers and narketing gimmicks.

There are so many games I want to play coming out, but I just don't have time to play them. I can afford them and I can afford multiple systems, but it comes down to time and patience. I'm finding that a lot of games are the same or they're pushing for the big open world and I just don't have the time for that. When I get home from work, I'm tired and I just want to watch a movie and go to bed, or sometimes after work I play pool and have a beer with my friends/coworkers. I have no idea how people with a full time job, a spouse, young children and a social life can even do it (I am forever in awe of anybody who manages this).

Thank you for addressing this topic!! I too feel it. I was into gaming before and there were a lot of games. Way too many too, but I was able to enjoy them, complete them to 100%, or 130% or 200% (cos u know plenty of games have side quests, optional bosses, secret items, weapons and armor 😃) I think that since the 2010s or even since 2007 or 2008, I just been overwhelming. I still played games, but I was noticing I wasnt completing them, just playing them for fun. I had more fun being hyped for the games online, in gamestop etc and going to Walmart or Gamestop and buying it, looking at the cool box art than actually playing it. In the last 6 years or so Ive had so many physical and digital games that I haven't beat or even started. Some are still sealed. Also tons of games I downloaded from the PSN, Nintendo Shop, Steam, games on PS3, PS4, PS Vita, DS, 3DS, Switch. It makes me feel guilty and gives me anxiety when I go to my room. Ive gotten off gaming but occasionally back into it. But most of the time I just watch reviews and playthroughs on YT. I will probably try and get rid of most my games especially the ones I dont play. There's so many games both good and bad. So little time. I think Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo shouldnt let just anyone come up with a new game but hire people who give it a rating. Would prevent a lot of shovelware from being released. Less games. We should stop consuming so many games. Companies should make remakes, ports, remasters etc of games which I seen they have been doing in the 2010s...but yeah also slow down on releasing new games. Or stop it...the PS2, DS, Wii, and PS4. .each of these consoles alone have enough games to keep a person busy for many lifetimes. If we're strictly talking about the home console market, the overall output has been shrinking with every generation. Publishers/developers can only make so many games per console generation now due to the need of more manpower in order to make AAA games today. What you're seeing today is the result of 40+ years worth of knowledge. We've learned a lot about what good game design is and what the market wants. In other words, you're seeing less trash thus making the quality stuff stand out more.

it's the perfect amount for people that are patient to wait, and probably overwelming for people that want games on release date... games went on sale when i was young too but i couldn't imagine getting so many games so cheap just by waiting or receiving games monthly through a subscription service when i was young (and had much more time to play).

The problem I have is that I not only have to beat all the games I have in my Backlog, but also get all the Achievements since I play on Xbox. The past two months I've completed (all achievements) the following: - Assassin's Creed 3 (Xbox 360) - Assassin's Creed Liberation HD (Xbox 360) - Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (Xbox 360) - Assassin's Creed Rogue (Xbox 360) - Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China I have already completed AC1, AC2, ACB, ACR, AC4 Black Flag (Xbox One Edition), AC Unity. I still need to complete: - Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India - Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia - Assassin's Creed: Ezio Collection - Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered - Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered - Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Assassin's Creed Origins - Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Assassin's Creed Valhalla (not yet released) So, this is the backlog for Assassin's Creed only, and only for the Xbox. I still need to complete all Gears, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effects, Dragon Age, CoD, Battlefields, Sekiro, GTA (from San Andreas to 5), Fallout 4, and way more. This is only for the Xbox as I said. So... this is the massive backlog I have and each franchise includes all Remasters or Xbox 360 & Xbox One Editions, therefore I beat some games more than two times due to Achievements or different editions. Like Halo for example, besides beating and completing it once on their own version I still lack the MCC, which requires to bear every game more than twice each for the Playlists and LASO runs, which are insane on their own, or the Seriously Achievements from the Gears franchise, where each Achievement would take me more than a week but the latest ones more than 3 months of 24/7 gaming time EACH. Since I don't only beat them, but hunt ALL the achievements, even if they are worth 0 GS. So far I have completed 28 games in total, including Fallout 3, NV, Dragon Age Inquisition, Titanfall, Halo Reach, Halo 4 and others. I know even if I had 1 year to play nonstop it would be not enough.

I think another part of the problem can be the increasing length of games-- games on average used to run about 8-12 hours, with longer RPGs being 20-40 hours. Now, 20-40 hours for most AAA games is the norm, with RPG's like Skyrim and Witcher clocking in at 80-100 hours. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think shorter games can be better-- developers are usually padding out their games with filler to hit those longer gameplay times.

Its the best period of all time, hands down. People say 2004 was the best year but this is the best period, so many games to choose from in the last couple of years, and so many of them are amazing. The only problem is that there are so many games and lots of them dont get the sales they deserve, so we have lots of failures, but we also have great succeses. But yeah you have to be carefull and spent your money wisely. 980+ games on steam here, lol, but most of them are from bundles, so many games i want to play and i dont have the time, i can complete like 50 games a year, i will never finish them all, hell i will never try them all. "never spent more than 20$ for a PC game" :P

In regards to that PeterDor video he posted, where $60 games turn into $20 games a few months down the road. The only games I buy day one are the ones I know that will retain their value. So that's pretty much Nintendo titles and JRPGs. While I do have a huge backlog of current gen and past gen games, I keep them sealed right up until I play them. A sealed game is worth more, so if I do decide that I won't play it, I am nearly always guaranteed a good buck.

Its a great problem to have. I think the main problem we have is that we feel behind compared to how it used to be. Since so there's a lot of games coming out at once and we want to experience all the good one, you would hear about this great game from a friend or online and you just want to play it now even though you're currently play 2 or 3 different titles. When I really really started to get into video games was around the N64 time and you made me remember that I also was able to recall release dates for every game coming out. Tough to do that now.

I guess I could also say there are too many movies, too many books, too many tv shows, too much music to listen too, etc. Just play one game at a time. Beat that, then move on to the next thing. I don't juggle games, and I can't see how anyone could. If you have to miss out on something, then just come back to it at another time. You also don't have to play everything that comes out. I stay away from anything that's online and multiplayer only and just focus on single player.

No, there are not too many games. I think the big problem with game companies and the precarious problem of creating things is that they're too set on making money or least getting enough money to not go under instead of trying to focus on the creation process. I also think that the levels of talent and the transition from idea to work is a huge gap to cross are huge stumbling blocks that don't get enough consideration. Got a whole lot of people out there with ideas, but not enough people willing to put in the fight to turn such ideas into anything. I don't think it is ruining the hobby. Enough for different types of people to play different kinds of games. The constant buy, buy, buy mentality is being pushed to breaking. Wow, wrote that before I actually started watching:p You have to know yourself better and make a decision on what you think will enjoy. There's nothing wrong with it. I do have an issue when people try to guilt me or say I'm missing out because I don't get the same games, but like you said, so much stuff out there it is not possible to play it all. Hell, I barely play games now because I am reading a bunch, writing a story, and trying to make my own game. I think the thing to remember is to be tolerate of other people who choose to play other games and not demand other people to spend their time playing something I want them to play. I am mature enough to accept that people have different tastes and that I'll stick to only a handful of games at a time, because there is so much.

Interesting video Johnny, but I think you are looking at this from the wrong point of view. The real issue here is not about the games, but the fact that the number of gamers has increased massively during the years. Gaming has become more and more popular (and accepted) as a hobby, so more and more companies will make more and more games (is not that they've suddenly realised that it's a profitable market...). Also, think about the impact that internet had on gaming: as a source of information (so I don't understand what you mean by "being picky"...if it's like choosing carefully between a good or a bad game, I don't think we have that problem anymore because of internet), but also in terms of accessibility! The fact that there is a constantly increasing number of gamers willing to buy more games is the only reason why we are getting "too many" games - as you say (if we are going to stop buying games, trust me that we will not having as many). If the problem is "there are too many games and I don't have the time to keep up", that's a very different story that has nothing to do with the market being saturised :D

I agree, there are just too many games and not enough money or time to get and or play them. I have a lot of PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360 games in my collection that I have started and haven't finished yet. I have current gen games that I haven't gotten around completing either. I am very picky when it comes to games, but there have been a lot of games coming out that are what I like. There are a ton of bad games out there too, but those are easy to spot and avoid. It does lead to a very over saturated market though. However, to me the most annoying thing about gaming these days is all the games that are released that are not finished and or very buggy. I miss the old days of quality over quantity.

It's just funny how fast your game collection can add up. I have so many games, that I seriously worry if I will ever have time to play them all. Mathematically, I don't think I will be able to. Even if I live to be 120. And then I'm looking forward to various new PS4 games, Dragon Quest games on 3DS, anxious about what VR is going to do in the next few years, am excited about numerous indie games, arghh. It is a good thing I decided to bow out once console games go fully digital. I only do Steam and GOG for digital.

Jesus, i've been having this feeling for the past 2 years. I find this problem even worse for younger people like me! (15 years of age here) I love games from all decades, genres and especially rpgs.... so the task of playing all the classics from the 90' like Chrono trigger to games like Final Fantasy X from the 2000's at the same time when people like Atlus and square STILL are pumping new titles on handhelds AND mainline consoles is a very taxing job! AND INCLUDING SCHOOL ALSO ON THAT! You're lucky to Johnny to have had the time to experience all these games in the past, I must say! So I suppose it is really a must to be picky nowadays in this massive industry.

I have to agree, it does feel like that there are way too many video games. Many companies just keep posting them out for the market, and how time passes by so we get occupied with other, in a way more important things. There are several more times video games on the market than I can manage to keep up with the backlog.

People complain about short linear games like The Order 1886, but to be honest I kinda liked it, mainly because it was quick and to the point, there are SO many open world games these days and even sequels to games that aren't usually open world end up getting sequels that are open world (like MGS, Mirrors edge, etc.)
