Too Many Ukuleles? Never! UAS Is Real
Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome - UAS or Gear Acquisition Syndrome - GAS
How many ukuleles is too many? Can you justify all those ukes? Spending hours drooling of internet ukuleles?
Basically my opinions on owning multiple ukuleles, bass ukuleles and even bass guitars and double basses. A look at some of my ukuleles, ukulele types and other instruments and the pros and cons of UAS.
I am not telling you to go out and buy more ukuleles, however, I am not telling you to not go out and buy more ukuleles!

I have a terrible case of UAS. I’m at the point now when people ask how many I have, my answer is the breakdown, “do you mean tenors, electrics, acoustics...”. Not only are they awesome instruments, I also think they are pieces of art, so some are in my collection because I was just drawn to it as a beautiful instrument. Like you, I think there is a place for less expensive ukuleles even if you have expensive ones. Sometimes I feel bad for how many I have, but I have wide range and love them all, so I get over it. Now I’m watching you play with the electronics and I think there’s another rabbit hole I might go down...

As George Harrison said, "Why have one ukulele when twelve will do?". I own 2 KeAloha sopranos, 1 cigar box soprano, 1 Eleuke peanut solid body soprano, 1 Tanglewood tenor (I love that brand), 1 Lanakai tenor, 1 Lanakai double-course tenor (8 string), 1 Tanglewood baritone, 1 no name brand baritone, 1 Caramel bass uke, oh yes and 1 foldable travel soprano uke on the way. So that's 11 ukes ... one more to get, perhaps a concert? I also have 6 guitars of various sorts electric to steel string acoustic to classical, 1 electric bass, 1 electric keyboard (I can't play that but I've got one!), 7 recorders of all sizes including a small bass recorder, 1 fife, 2 flagolet, and a parsnip up a pear tree!

Absolutely love this comment Tobias, it's like a self help group on this video! 11 ukes, that's an odd number, can't be having that! "1 electric keyboard (I can't play that but I've got one!), 7 recorders of all sizes including a small bass recorder, 1 fife, 2 flagolet, and a parsnip up a pear tree!" LOL. I did actually spit out my cuppa when I read this! Thank You

Love this video Rachel, it's spot on! I have 8 myself including a banjo uke and a stunning Kala baritone ziricote -my most expensive purchase. I also have a clearwater electric and because of this i have pedals, amp etc..My wishlist is a flight pathfinder electric (because i watched your vid!) Ha ha! I also have 4 guitars which i haven't played in a while as the ukes took over! I do love musical instruments and have other various items..drums, harmonica and percussion instruments i've brought home from different countries. It's an enjoyable hobby and definitely not a problem! Here's to the next uke!

Hi Rachel - another good reason for having a wide variety of Ukuleles is that the myriad of songs we play were originally recorded using a wide variety of Guitars, Banjos and Mandolins. I really enjoy picking a Ukulele Model which gives something similar to the original recording. I've also found that with careful choice of instruments to buy - including well looked after second hand ones - you can build up a good collection without a massive outlay - plus if you find you're not playing a particular model very often then you can sell that fairly easily. My current collection is: Tenors - Flight Sophia Soundwave, Flight Phantom, Flight Centurion, Flight Pathfinder, Kala JTE Archtop, Ashbury Resonator, Clearwater semi solid Electric, Baton Rouge 6 String, Baton Rouge Electro Acoustic 8 String, Duke 10 Electro Acoustic Banjolele, Custom Built electric Cigar Box (American Number Plate) Bass - Mahalo Solid Body, Kala Journeyman. I've had some early discussions with a local Guitar Studio to convert the 8 String to have Steel Mandolin Strings tuned in pairs of GCEA.

You have a wonderful collection there Mike and yes completely agree it is nice to have the choice to suit the music or the sound that's needed (plus it's another excuse for more!). I'll often pick up second hand instruments and yes, it's possible to collect a lot very reasonably. I've had some fantastic basses over the years this way too. I'm loving the fact that so many of us have so many instruments, makes us all feel a little better about it I think. Keep well and I'm enjoying your vids.

UAS is definitely a real diagnosis haha! Once you fall in love with the Uke .. only other Ukulele players understand! Rachel, I did look up your Smurf video! Loved it! My late Husband used to collect Garfields. I still have loads of them even after 6 years of his passing. Just to add, I have one Baritone which I rarely play (too big for my small hands), but I love it so it's staying. One Cocobolo Tenor, three Concerts, one Soprano and one Sopranissimo (which I hate haha)

I certainly have more than I need. Since each has it’s own look and voice, it seems reasonable. Most are low-end beginner instruments. Since that’s where my skills are, that’s fine with me. I look forward to getting to the point where my playing is worthy of acquiring a better instrument.

Your playing skills dosen't matter to buy a better instrument. The two major questions are, are you playing every week and are you play longer than a year? When the answer is yes, you are ready for more. And very often a better instrument can massive improve your skills, because some tricks are easier playable on an another instrument. But very important. Go to a good shop and try instruments. Very often the pricy instrumente are not the best in your own opinion. The feeling must be right. So have a lots of fun and find your next love.

In that case I suffer from PAS, Pet Aquasition Syndrome. 😂 I could open a small Zoo. I absolutely love taking care of all my animals including the cleaning. As long as it's not hurting anyone and you enjoy whatever it is you collect, I think it's ok. Starting my own ukulele collection over here, I've only been playing for 10 months and soon to have my 3rd ukulele - a Flight Centurion tenor. My first one that was a cheap and cheerful Kmise I don't play as I actually find it harder to play than my Ortega. I found that the sound was way better on the Ortega which had encouraged me to play more and I've never looked back since.

I know I don't wanna go overboard/keep looking.. there's a temptation/curiosity to still see what's out there after you bought, wondering was it the right choice, is there something better.. I think having hoarder relatives makes me want to avoid the trap of having more. Its a good thing I'm not interested in bass (the rubber strings look weird too lol), or spruce/soft tops (bright sounding/riskier for damage) or buying only for it's looks, or special features (like long necks or extra strings), or variants like banjoleles (don't like the sound), or baritone - i've got 2 guitars already so that'll do (but looks likely I'll sell one). I've revised my remark to not exclude gloss after playing a lovely Fender in a shop. I kept going back to play it. I look to stay on the less expensive/used end & haggle here n there but hopefully not offend. I have 2.5 ukes. A concert, a tenor, & a plastic soprano co-owned with my 10 yo. She also has a wooden soprano of her own. That's supposed to be the maximum overall but, honestly, I'm not 100% satisfied in that I did want an electric tenor and seriously eyed the Aklot. My nerves just couldn't handle the possibility of a fragile, freighted instrument getting damaged or lost in transit and dealing with the hassle later. So I bought a second-hand acoustic locally (thought to forgo the electric), wanting it to have sufficiently different sound properties to make it worth owning an extra instrument. Otherwise I'd rather have only one (well two including a travel uke). It could also be comparing/testing them out until you're happy. As I was traveling to get my second, I had this idea of buying the components to make my daughter's soprano electric (saw a DIY video). Not game to try it on my other, better quality instruments. But regardless that her used uke only cost me $5 (if she shows real interest, I'll look for a better one), I don't wanna screw it up..its just a thought for now. Either that or an inexpensive used electric (but that means another uke which I'm not keen on the idea of. Besides, if you have a favoured one you play most of the time, the others kinda go to waste & you'd feel you have to play them to get use out of them?). About UAS in general, at what point does it become this UAS.
@UkuleleWales
@UkuleleWales 2 жыл бұрын
I think it is very much a personal thing when it comes to instruments. I know many people who are absolutely fine and hapy just owning one, but then I also know many who have more. I think the main thing is to enjoy the instrument(s) you have. In terms of how many count as UAS, again a very individual thing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though.

Love this video, I was saying (about 10 ukes back) to someone about UAS and he said well I have guitars that are 5k and more and the piano he has 20k. So yes ukes are cheap in relation. I have about 20 ukes plus 4 guitars and a tenor guitar and electro tenor on order(YOUR FAULT!) also a ubass and BASS guitar. I started off with soprano moving up the sizes...concert,tenor...baritone...now bass and tenor guitar. Funnily enough my cheaper ukes I prefere. Not really gelled with my cocobollo. I cushion the blow with my wife by always treating her as well...so I always add some money knowing I’ve got to treat her lol. Cases are also a problem I had a cupboard full of cases and gig bags which I’ve had to move to the loft now as most of my ukes are now on the wall in my bedroom...still can’t understand how the wife agreed to that 😂

Fun video. I'm primarily a guitar player, and I've got no problem with gas (not that I don't have it, but rather that I don't see it as a problem). I've got an ever-growing collection and each is a joy to play. For some reason though--maybe because I played a number of inexpensive ukes that were horrible--once I started playing my good uke, that's all I wanted to play (in terms of ukes). What's more, I didn't *want* to love that uke due to a horrible experience with the company. And yet here I am. I certainly wish I could be a uke collector instead, because as you mentioned, it is more reasonable in terms of cost.

I think the secret is greed management. Ask yourself why do I want this? For example just got a bass Ukulele why when I have an electric bass I don't play. Reason I don't play encumbrance, I have to unpack the amp, I can't play it at night with about calls to turn it down. the dog attacks me because of the sound.(hard to dodge when plugged into an amp.) The list goes on. The bass ukulele solved most of those issues.

Very intresting to see I'm not alone. The last Uke I bought was a Kmise Bratone with GCEA Aquilla strings. My Tanglewood baritone is gCEA (note the lowercase "g", that indicates high-G tuning whereas uppercase "G" indicates the low-G tuning) and I must say I really prefer the DGBE or dGBE tuning. The baritone when tuned gCEA is too much like a tenor.

@christian_blass 3 жыл бұрын
@@tobiasware Yes you are right, but it doesn't matter. When it goes to Baritone the DGBE is the only way. The Aqullia Baritone strings in the gCEA do not sound like Baritone und for a Tenor Sound not crisp enought and very muddy. I think it is time to learn Baritone. Hope for tutorial by Uke Wales.

@@christian_blass I agree, however, coming from a guitar background, baritone uke holds no mysteries for me as its tuning is just the top four strings of a guitar anyway. I really took to uke after realising it was just the top four strings of a guitar with a capo on the 5th fret.
