Too Much Hype for Texas in 2024?, Ole Miss Over-Hyped?, Who Is Under-Hyped This Offseason in SEC?

It is hype season across the SEC and college football, so as we are joined by our buddy Chris Marler, we debut a segment called "Chill The Hell Out", as we talk about teams that folks are maybe TOO high on this offseason. Gordy makes a case for the Texas Longhorns getting too much hype as many pundits are putting them with Georgia as the two best teams in the SEC in 2024. Marler gives his thoughts on the Longhorns as well as they make their debut season in the SEC.
Is Ole Miss getting too much hype this offseason? Are expectations TOO high on Lane Kiffin in 2024 as they're being billed as "Championship or Bust." Marler makes a case for Missouri to perhaps take a step back from last season. Marler also thinks that Alabama could be being over-hyped in 2024, as Kalen DeBoer tries to settle into his new gig and coaching in a brutally tough conference with a very difficult schedule.
Lastly, we take a look at a few teams that may be under-hyped, meaning nobody is talking about them or expecting very much from them. Gordy makes a case for Arkansas, not to be a playoff team, but perhaps to win 8 or 9 games this year with Bobby Petrino and Taylen Green. Marler says he likes Tennessee as a playoff team, led by Nico Iamaleava who is surrounded by offensive weapons. Marler also likes Texas A&M as a team that could be flying under that radar and could surprise this season if Conner Weigman plays well, and Kentucky with all the portal weapons they brought in including QB Brock Vandagriff.

A lot of bad takes on this one. Strong/Herman never won their conference. Or made the playoff. So it's a stretch to compare their experiences with Sark. Also: if the previous season's success has no bearing on the following season, you could make the argument that Georgia and Ohio State will be underwhelming as well.

I’ve evaluated many rosters this spring. I’ve done full breakdowns in my sports groups. Outside of Texas’s secondary they are absolutely loaded roster wise. Great offensive line lead by kelvin banks and 3 other returning starters. Great RB room with ced Baxter watch out for there freshman rb Gibson out of IMG he’s special. Deep WR room Isaiah bond is a beast, then they got all 5 stars and other experienced guys. The defensive line with Ant Hill and Alfred Collins is good they got some backups on the Dline that would be starters at other schools. There linebackers are solid only weakness is the secondary.

@@darnellrtr252 Barron getting hurt in the Bama game was costly, and losing Williams for the first half of the Washington game probably cost them the game, in my opinion (comparing 1st half stats to second half, when he was allowed to return). The secondary was night & day from 1st half to 2nd half. Muhammad is an absolute ball hawk

This logically fallacy of comparing this Texas team to what they did before this group of coaches and players is killing me. It’s either a purposeful bad take for clicks or they just don’t have critical thinking skills. You can argue a harder conference sure but to say historically Texas hasn’t done this or that when the program is led by different people is just a smooth brain take.

What he's getting at is... as talented as Texas was last year, they still weren't able to go undefeated in the Big12. Now, you lose a lot of talent to the draft, which Texas isn't used to doing. And they expect to pick up where they left off and hopefully go 11-1 again. And since there's no precedence of Texas possessing this ability in the Big12. Somehow, they'll all of a sudden possess this ability in the SEC... against tougher opponents. He's not saying that it can't happen. He just needs to be able to see it first. Or in his words, "Chill Out." At least that's what I took away from what he said.

I see your point, but there are a lot of things independent of the coaching staff that absolutely impact the outcomes of games, even though they are inexplicable at best, such as Death Valley at night, or Jordan Hare anytime (add reynolds razorback stadium if you're ole miss)... None of that is at issue here, though. That is. other than these are things that Texas and Oklahoma may have heard about , but have yet to experience. It's the whole premise that the mid teams in the Big 12 are similar to the mid teams in the SEC, which had me wondering what they're smoking. Vanderbilt would be a mid in the Big 12 NOW (and they probably would have won two big twelve titles the last two years James Franklin was there.

Gosh how will anyone anyone outside of LsU have a decent line 🙄Head coach, D coordinator are there still. They consulted some of the best to find a developer. It’s hilarious that y’all complain about d line prospects moving on and it affecting us. But then talk about Quinn as he won’t have another year in the program. Again, haters will be haters.

Lifelong Rebel fan here. Why do people place so much emphasis on the past?? What happened 15 years ago or last season just doesn't matter. Teams win when they are loaded with talent and have good coaching. Period. Doesn't matter that a team 7 years ago performed poorly in this or that stadium. Most of these young men don't even know what happened. Every season is a new start. As for Judkins: Yes. by all means he's a talent. But we don't have to replace him. We just have to replace his production. And IMO we will. Bentley had a larger ypc than Q last year, and Parrish is an excellent back. Heck, OM has a walk on that could start for many non-SEC teams. The biggest wildcard is Dart. He absolutely MUST stay healthy or all of this is out the window. With his willingness to truck LBs and CBs I have my concerns about that.

We have a winning record against every SEC team except Vandy. In the last 4 years, we're 2-2 against the top SEC teams, Georgia & Alabama, in years when one or the other of the two teams won the SEC. Outside of Georgia and Alabama, Texas has the highest rated average recruitment class in the SEC for the past 4 years. If Texas loses to any team in the SEC, it will be by 1 score. Texas will blowout a fair number of SEC opponents this year given the explosive players they have on offense. Good luck to the SEC homers. Texas is a talented team.

My take on Alabama is I’m not worried about the offense. Deboer will have our offense looking very polished beyond what people think. I need to see if our new defensive scheme works good enough to be a bend but don’t break defense. On the schedule outside of a few teams most of the teams we play have just as much roster turnover as we do. I’m worried about mizzou and Oklahoma more than Tennessee and lsu. Tennessee defense is all new players and lsu has a pocket passer and who knows if their defense will be any good this year. RTR

I'm a Texas fan bro..I have real life spread offense syndrome due to Mike Leach and the big 12..Bama will not skip a beat..If anything they will become more of a match up problem..With the athletes on campus in that offense...Only problem you MIGHT have is scoring too fast..But then again look at how you recruit defensively..It's a freak show two deep...Plus Deboer is recruiting lights out...

@@franknitti100 You familiar with Aerosmith and their smash hit "Dream On?" SEC has EIGHT defenses that held opponents to under 25 PPG. xii had FOUR. The difference in talent between the 2 conference is as wide as the grand canyon. Check out the '24 composite roster rankings for the two conferences. Vandy has a better roster than most of the xii. VANDY. TCU is #1 for the xii at 31. Every SEC team is mid 20's or better except vandy at 42. Anything else I can help you with?

Texas DID (if you ever follow them) replace most of the talent they lost in the draft through the portal! The receivers they got including 5 star Wingo, and Collins might be be better than who left. Granted the DL and Db's will need maturing, but I have no worries about the offense.

I'm a Texas fan, I want them to win every game, but, I do agree a little bit with Gordy in that, I think everyone needs to pump the brakes a little.. We've had great teams and big expectations before and we didn't live up to the hype. Now, having said that I do believe something is different under coach Sarkisian.. He does have a great culture in the locker room. He ha been recruiting really good talent and he has some great assistant coaches to work with. I hate that slogan "Texas is back"! Let's wait and see how they play, not just this year, but the next 3 years for me. It's already tough to be a Longhorns fan when Everyone hates us and wants us to lose.. 😅 Let's be humble, keep the Texas is back stuff quiet, and prove it on the field! HOOK EM 🤘

@@LockedOnSEC 1. Brooks missed the final 4.5 games last year and the running game was fine 2. Baxter should be improved as he was only a true freshman 3. It’s not just Baxter at running back. Jaydon Blue is a total dual threat back and is the fastest running back in the NCAA (this can be verified as he hit the highest top speed of any RB last season). They will likely split touches evenly so to discount the impact of Blue is completely ignorant.

@@NewYearsMixDDS2012 Yes, RB is one of the least of Texas' worries. I think most of Texas issues are on defense. Will the D line and secondary be good enough? The secondary should be better but that was Texas' Achilles heel last year. The D line will not be as good, but Texas might of had the best D line in country last year. I think Texas will be fine in both areas but will have to outscore some opponents. Texas needs to get a little better on Defense. I am a Texas fan.

Losing Murphy and Sweat hurts the interior D line, fortunately the edge position got hugely upgraded. Should have a much improved pass rush, I just hope the drop off in run defense isn’t too much. Secondary worries me. I think they have great players, but it’s the only position coach I’m not sold on. Brooks regresses at his time at Texas. I definitely feel you on the concerns there

LSU has MORE national titles this century than any other school besides the only other one I mentioned besides LSU. LSU has just as many as the ENTIRE big. MORE than the OLD xii and MORE than the entire LEFT coast. SEC has FOUR teams with MULTI national titles THIS CENTURY. If that's mediocre then what's your thoughts on the rest of the entire college football world OUTSIDE the SEC? It's been SEC VS SEC in at least TWO title games maybe ever THREE times.

The SEC has *four* different *multiple championship winners* in the past twenty years - no other conference came *remotely close* to that sort of depth, with one apiece (B10: OSU, ACC: Clemson, Pac: USC)

Both commentators spoke from facts regarding who tejas lost last year, and whom they are bringing in as replacements. tejas, lost a lot of talent last year. Ewers is quite elite with Sark calling the plays in the huddle. Top tier oline. Stop talking past decade. Sark developed 5-7 to CFP3 in three years with a great staff and they are churning top five classes every year. People really need to be worried about Longhorn future.

It is interesting they keep commenting on the last 10 years or since 2010. What about the 10 years before that? What about Bama from 1997- 2007? They had 3 10-win seasons and 4 losing seasons. And a couple of others in which they were barely above .500. Every team has bad streaks. And sure none of the many standout receivers Texas will have in 2024 could gel with Ewers. Some of have already played with him at Texas but they could all not have chemistry. And even though they have talent on the D-line they do not have as much as last year and maybe the talented players they have do not work out and the same for the secondary. But that is true for Georgia also. Nothing says the players filling in for what they lost will automatically be good enough. But the reason why Texas and Georgia are so hyped is that they have very good talent (most of it tested talent) on all sides of the ball. These teams do not seem to have large weak areas compared to other teams. Maybe Texas will choke. I do not think they will run the SEC in football. Texas probably will win the most overall NCs like it has. There should be no drop off there. But in football Texas should be in competition or good most years. Winning the SEC is now just tougher than it was before OU and Texas joined and it was tough before. But these guys are not good at analysis.

That's it, LSU had that one off year where they won it all and Florida going even further back. Playing Vandy, Miss St, Arkansas, Kentucky, S. Carolina, etc. etc. is the same as playing Kansas, Iowa St, Texas tech, K-State.

Texas wasn't able to face that level of quality and go undefeated... so even by your own logic, if they were equal, Texas would still struggle. Your logic against the SEC also falls short. You claim the SEC "has a big head because of Alabama and recently Georgia." But ever since there was a postseason to crown a National Champion (known as the BCS), the SEC has been the best. So even if you took Alabama & Georgia out, the SEC would still have more championships than any other conference, and with more teams. Without Bama & UGA, the SEC would have 7 titles with 4 different teams. The B1G has 3 with 2 teams, the ACC has 5 (giving them Miami) with 3 teams, the Big12 has 2 with 2 teams, and the Pac12 has 2 with 1 team. So even without the top 2, it's still the best conference. But that's still not an apples to apples comparison! Let's take the top 2 away from every conference and truly compare what the rest of the SEC is compared to everyone else. Only the ACC would have a title with Miami, but they weren't in the ACC then, I was just being generous. No matter how you chop it up, there's no comparison! And you can't take Bama or UGA out.

These two fools don’t realize that Texas couldn’t recruit offensive and defensive linemen until it was announced they were moving g to the SEC. Since that announcement look at the difference in the offensive and defensive lines. That’s the difference. Texas has always recruited skill position player, but not linemen. Texas not playing a Big12 schedule is beneficial for the Longhorns. Texas is still trying to secure their secondary, the only proven QB they play all year is Carson Beck. The Big12 was full of offensive minds and competent QBs. Texas one weakness may not be tested at all with this SEC Schedule.

Yes, I was a little bummed last year when I saw Texas was playing Washington and not Michigan. Texas matched up much better against Michigan and Alabama last year. Washington's strength was Texas' weakness.

There is always a chance at a step backwards or neutral. One good year happens a lot. UT comes with a swag they are tops but since it has been a while last year would prime a lot of hype quickly. I think a neutral year, similar to last minus 5% for whatever that means is probably accurate.

Cause last time I checked most recent one was with Colt in 2008 if you only count conference play cause Texas lost the natty that year but last time Texas was perfect was with Vince and that was only one season. Marler at least gave a reasonable take on Ole Miss. Gordy just went off the rails with past events very unrelated to evaluating THIS Ole Miss team. Ulysses Bentley performed better than Judkins individually per carry last year; Judkins just got a lot more carries, partially because he demanded more carries. Bentley's speed makes him more of a homerun hitter. Judkins was NOT the main reason for Ole Miss' good season last year and is not a huge loss--that's just a tired, less educated national take.

I believe the lower teams, even Vanderbilt, will be better. These teams may not be all 6 and 6. Some will be better on the field than in the standings. OU and Texas will have adjustments. Mizzou first came had success because the league at that time was dowm. As a Mizzou fan I'll take it. Theleague is way tougher now.

They wanted Texas to walk into the secsec and get their hat handed to them, and they suspect it's not going to go that way. That makes them sad. Now, I'm a Texas fan, and there is a possibility it goes a little sideways and we get left out of the playoffs. Our strength was up the middle defense last year. Those guys are all gone. You don't replace 2 AA DTs and a ConfDPOY MLB easily. If the middle of your defense is elite, it makes the rest of the defense's job much easier; and when it's bad, it makes the rest of the defense's job much harder. There's your path, haters. The level of attrition is something that will be foreign to them. Take TX & OU's draft numbers away, and that's the level of typical NFL talent they're used to facing every week. Now compare that to the level of SEC talent. There will be a learning curve. Texas needs to imagine playing Oklahoma level talent or better in most weeks. 4 or 5 teams might not meet that criteria, and all but 1 are on their schedule. Arkansas is one of those teams, but I remember Sark's last game against Arkansas. The bottom line is, as talented as they are, they still weren't able to go undefeated in the Big12. So it'll be fun to watch regardless, and if those teams are weak enough to get ran through... then that's something they'll have to live with.

Hell Nah. OU stays in the top 8 or so of recruiting and has for decades. Yall act like the whole SEC is Alabama and Georgia talented rosters which it is not. OU is usually the best team tx plays. @jiohdee I'll assume you know what attrition means. Because it's simple math after we have that common ground. You struggled to go undefeated in a conference where you were typically the top dog in that conference, swapping between you and TX. Now, you'll be entering into a situation where you'll be facing more talented teams than previously on a weekly basis. Not a one-off. You're leaving a conference where 2 teams recruited well, and you only had to play one of them annually. To one where half the conference recruits well, and where 95% - 98% recruited better than your previous conference. This is why I brought up attrition and made the statement I made. There will be a learning curve, and how long that is is up to OU.
