I very often feel overwhelmed when walking into my craft room, but I think that is because I have totally gone overboard with buying and collecting supplies. It has come to the point where I hoard every piece of paper/card I can find and now the whole place is packed to the rafters and I can't find anything. I've recently started sorting through everything and throwing stuff away, but I still don't have control of the space. Sometimes I avoid the room at all costs.

That's exactly my problem... I have a large craft room and even a second one, full of materials and tools and I am completely overwhelmed by the agony of choice. In addition, I always have a lot of ideas and many techniques that I have seen and really want to try. This often ends up with me getting nothing done in the little time I have available. And that always frustrates me a lot. In addition, I always spend more time organizing and re-organizing and re-sorting my stuff than I do crafting...

Please don't throw anything away! Pack it up and donate it to a school, or retirement home, or offer it for free. Many people would love to craft but cannot afford the insanely expensive supplies. You'll make someone else so happy!

Dearest Barbara, Thank you, thank you, thank you for this very special video in response to my comment! I’m honestly a bit embarrassed that I commented that day because I was feeling very low. So many people offered kind suggestions, and then to have you do a junk journal session about what to do when you’re overwhelmed-well, now I’m overwhelmed by your kindness! And I’m fan-girling and doing happy dances because Barbara did a video for me and everyone else who gets overwhelmed! And what a gorgeous collage you made. I am always inspired by how you navigate things when you’re not happy with a result. Persistence! I need more of that. I’ve discovered that I am much more motivated when I’m making a journal specifically for someone else. This past week I’ve been working on a “Paper Tasting Journal” for a friend who doesn’t really like journaling but does love the texture, look, and smell of paper. It’s almost done, and I’ve had so much fun working on it-no mental blocks at all. I think I get overwhelmed most when I’m trying to make a journal or do a spread without someone in mind or when I’m trying to make a journal for myself. Thank you again!

You worked out your solution!! It was in you, just needed coaxing. And wow, you are adventurous... maybe add some essential oil to your dying technique, or add a layer of that crinkly paper in a chocolate box for sound effect and smell or a sheet of used parchment paper ...just have fun Suzy, your friend will love her gift from you!!! 🤗

I know what you’re saying. Somehow making something for my friends is so satisfying. I get the ooohs and aaaws. When I try to make for just myself, I’m always thinking I should focus my energies on someone else’s needs. The crafting community is always there to root us on, even if we’ve never met. We’re not in this alone. When I first started JJ, I skipped by Barbara as I felt she was so beyond my skill level. Then I realized I would be learning from one of best. Take care.

A good practice would be to, when you're watching videos and have ideas popping in your head, keep a notebook with you and jot down the ideas, adding any details so you don't forget them when you go to sit down and create! Another, which I have found myself doing lately because of my creative blocks, would be to sit and make bases for things to add to your journal. Like last night I made bases for "ticket" strips. I've made masterboards out of just whatever I have laying around. I've also made envelopes and tags. All of this is to pile up a stock, and to not worry about decorating until I am ready to do so. And then if an idea pops in my head I can just grab a "base" for whatever I'm thinking of and start doing it. It helps a lot! I hope this helps you to if you're having a creative block! 🥰

I understand how Susie feels. I also go into my craft room and just sit there staring at my desk! I made an art journal. It felt less overwhelming to me. I started by just making backgrounds. A whole junk journal feels like a lot!

This community makes my heart warm. I love you all. To SuzieQ: One thing I enjoy doing when I'm feeling like I'm just not good enough or that my mojo is missing is to pull out 3 or 4 papers I like. It could be music paper, scrap book paper, printables... anything. I try to keep in mind colors that won't fight with each other. I just tear them into stripes, squares, and rectangles and collage them together. Then, I grab out one of my bins of scraps and glue paper onto paper. Ta-daahhh! You've created a master board! After cutting it up, if I'm not in love, gesso the bits that aren't pleasing and maybe stamp where the gesso dimmed the background down. In the end, if I'm not thrilled, i put them away as bases for when I'm feeling it more. My goal isn't really to make anything except bases. But I'm creating and playing with my supplies. You'd be surprised at how rarely I'm not happy worth at least the new tag and journaling card bases I've made. I do hope you start playing without putting pressure on yourself. Even if the master board finds its way into the bin, you've only used a couple of scraps, and you started working out those creative muscles. Hugs, my crafty friend.

Being able to tune out all the expectations & finished projects gives me the clarity & freedom I need to create. I also agree with the strategy mentioned in another comment of making for others. It does spread tremendous joy from ourselves to other people. Even a handmade card can really brighten someone's day!

Suzyq2463, I could have written your comment!! It's frightening, and comforting, to hear how much you sound like me! I have spent YEARS collecting a shameful amount of craft supplies and have used VERY little! And everything I make, I end up hating! I have taken HUNDREDS of screenshots of things other people have done & swear I'm going to try it, but I never do! And when I go to try again, I even get overwhelmed by all my choices in my pictures, so I try to make something up...and then I hate it!! ARGH!!!😡It's SO FRUSTRATING and DEFEATING! I think where I'm at right now is that I should pick something out of my pictures that looks pretty easy & try to copy it exactly and see how I feel about it. Barbara, this was addressed during last year's Dephemerember and you said you felt there was nothing wrong with copying until we find our own way. Maybe you could make a video about re-creating someone else's small project, like a tag. I'm sure there are those of us that WANT to be creative, but just don't have the gene others have.🤷😢 (I am also fighting poor health, so that doesn't help either.) If anyone new to crafting is looking at this, PLEASE go VERY easy on the supplies at first! Start with a few basics! Junk jouraling was created from the idea of making something out of trash, but has turned into another giant exercise in consumerism & shopping problems! I don't feel comfortable with who I've become. If I enjoyed playing with all of it that would be another story! Barbara! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR BRAVE EXPLORATION OF THESE TOUGH ISSUES!! ❤❤❤

Thank you @margaretcomella3318 It's good to know I'm not alone. I too wonder if I'm just lacking the creative DNA others have. But, really, that's the perfectionist in me. I want to be good at things immediately! Barbara has been doing junk journals for years--I only began this journey a little over a year ago, although I was bookbinding before that. For me, the best motivation is if I'm making a journal for someone else. Then it seems easy, somehow, because I have direction. I also need to learn to persist, even when I'm not happy with how a spread is going.

@@suzyq2463 I heard someone on YT say that collage isn't a talent, but it's a skill that we learn over time, trial and error. That means we don't need to be an artist, but to be dedicated to learning, failing, and honing a new craft. I find that to be a very positive outlook! ❤

I agree, yet I also think there is nothing wrong with trashing a project. I love the stubborn fighter you showed here Barbara, but that is definitely not me...or what I want to experience in my art room. After a couple of tries on the paper bag, I heard "quit" inside of me...or covering the whole bag with paper or fabric...or simply trying a different project and leaving this page for another day. But having said all of that, I have to say it was too artsy for me to begin with. It was still like a journal spread in an art journal and it overwhelmed me. I like the idea of starting with a bird, but I would not feel confident about gesso, paints, etc. I like the idea of starting with the bird & just making a tag. Hugs to ALL! And thank you Barbara for your desire to help! ❤

Not gonna lie...part way through I thought for heaven's sake stop; you're making it too light, too dark, covering up what you put down, etc. But this is absolutely stunning! It's a metaphor for the conundrum you are addressing. We can feel overwhelmed and keep trying and know that anything can be brought to another level. I absolutely adore that dear bird, your style, and your work. You have such great suggestions! Like so many here, I too feel overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of stuff; at some point, it does become too much. I'm going to commit to buying less, using more, and finishing one project at a time. Thank you!

So beautiful! I just love the steps that you took to get this gorgeous collage. I’ve learned two things about myself-one, stop bringing so much to the table. It’s overwhelming because I want to add one of everything to the project. gather what I need, and try using what I already have. And the second one is a very recent realization, like you, I need to have a clutter-free, clear desk. When I am overwhelmed at looking at my desk, there’s no way I’m going to be able to think clear enough to create. Thank you for all your beautiful inspirations! Hugs ❤️🤗

I'm sorry you have been struggling with your mental health, it is no easy feat to try to live every day life when you are feeling that way. Try to view your supplies and the time you spend creating as an investment in yourself, you are NOT selfish for dedicating some time, energy and money in yourself; it actually can help you focus better on your other activities and responsabilities if you let yourself flow, it doesn't matter if you dedicated 5 minutes to creating something or an hour. Does anyone ever create for others? I am always busy making things for my elderly pen pals! They love getting things in the mail! I also to to Facebook and grab a name on a happy mail space and create a cute pocket to fill with goodies. Many comments are about people being overwhelmed with tons of products. Maybe focus on giving things away. I saw a post where a woman had virtually nothing but yet said she was happy to share. After messaging her I found out she had MS, lived in a care facility with no family around an😂d depended on staff to give her magazines and junk mail. I took a priority mail box and filled it with stuff! What joy that brought me!

Thank you so much. Your tips really touched on exactly why I end up walking out of my craftroom and go pout. Today I did pick something small - Using circle punches to make some flowers - check, then I went and got the scallop circle punches - which then put me in a tail spin to find the “right” centers for the scallop flowers and my desk ended up stacked so high with “supplies”. I truly believe if I follow your 3 hints, I will be more successful. I will be writing them on an index card and posting in on my board by my desk to remind me. Too many choices is what is making me overwhelmed along with all the “clutter” I’m creating. Blessings and I sincerely hope the others who are struggling will embrace. Your hints. Watching you on this project reminded me if I’m not happy with what I’m making, I can only make 1 change at a time, not pull 5 things to try. Good luck all!

Margrete Miller said in one of her videos that not every page is going to be your favorite and that’s okay. This stuck with me-when a page is going off track I finish it and tell myself it doesn’t have to be a favorite. Often, when I look at it later I like it and don’t remember what my dissatisfaction was. I think it is less overwhelming to have a couple little baskets or trays with papers and supplies on my desk and limit myself to using those instead of giving myself free rein to hunt through all my stuff.

I so agree with the "start small". I have found full journal pages are almost always completely overwhelming to me so I’ve started making small journals. Very small. And I’m trying to follow your videos of doing lots of small things on the pages as I actually build the journal i.e. sewing something on the page or adding loads of sprays to diff pages. Something else that recently helped me get into my paper supplies again was using them to up-cycle a small box that had little drawers. I made a different tiny collage on each drawer but all in the same color scheme. All these fabulous supplies we have don’t always have to go in a specific thing like a journal but just by playing with them in different projects gets me motivated to go back to playing with journals. As always, I’m eternally grateful for you!! Much love!! 💕

Thank you Barbara for the encouragement. I just got back home to Atlantic Canada from 2.5 months travelling in a campervan around Florida. I was all excited to 1) finish Dephemerember, and 2) take all my "newly acquired" skilled from the above and get started on making a new journal. Unfortunately, I've spent the last 2 days drawing a blank, feeling overwhelmed, and struggling to get motivated. I can totally related to the woman in your video. But like you said, just focus on the baby steps, and reduce my choices - sound advice - thank you!

Baby girl, this is absolutely gorgeous!! Incredibleness from "nothing". The palm tree parts that hubby provided is perfection! I do believe that what you were doing with gluing the book pages down then peeling them off is called decollage. I've done layers upon layers and made some awesome backgrounds! Hugs angel, MomK 🤗❤️🌵❤️🤗

Susie, thank you for being so candid, I have the EXACT same problem...seriously, exactly!! I've almost considered just selling it all. It took me 2 yrs to make one jj😢. But I've decided to hang in there. One other person seen my jj and now she wants one and so does a other person also. I think that's awesome but I'm absolutely paralized..ugh.

23:15 the song thrush bird egg looks very similar to the American robin's egg. As a matter of fact that color blue is known as 'robin's egg blue". And the bird in your collage is similar to the American robin, too. 🥚

Also, I loved how encouraging you are to Susie (and everyone else who sometimes feels overwhelmed by all the possibilities - myself included). It really chimed with me that you said it sometimes is best to limit the choices in order to overcome the creative slump.

Hello Barbara, First of all, I'd like to say thank you for sharing this video, which is very helpful. I also love the end result, it is absolutely beautiful! I also had this frustrating feeling of not knowing how to get a page filled. Then I saw a video where the artist started from the focal point and created a background around it. It helped me a lot. And as you said, limiting the choices of supplies or images, really makes it easier. I like to work from a theme (a season or the seaside or a forest walk, the moon,...) or an emotion (love, gratitude, sadness ...). Sometimes even a quote. I say to myself: how would you like to express this, in terms of colours ? And once I'm there, ideas start to pop up. Sometimes, this can take more than 1 day. Then you have a fresh look to what you have created so far and it makes it easy to continue. This is truly a very useful video, so thanks again, Barbara ! And we love you too ❤

When I can't create I enjoy watching your videos for inspiration, one time you said in a video ''If the only thing you do on your page is stick something down and nothing else, that is okay.'' I think the idea of just 'showing up' to the journal is so important, I also enjoy just looking through my journal pages to see what I have been doing in it and I usually find something I can play within it. If that doesn't work the other thing I do is work outside the journal, making little ephemera pieces or little paper clusters and stitched pieces to build up my stash, this can feel a bit less overwhelming than working directly in the journal. Thank you for a wonderful video and another beautiful page.

Thanks so much Barbara! I think all creative people get stuck sometimes. The fact you have a craft room / space and supplies means you must be drawn to being creative, but maybe are too tired or weary of soul to draw anything out? (This happens to me) The way I get over that is to go and be somewhere that refreshes me, look at something natural! Even a park or garden, a beautiful sky or cloudscape. Then use that as your inspiration. Something to get you started. Another good motivator is to make something for someone else, a notebook, or little folder with something they might use, some happy mail or something like that. Try it! And don’t give up 😆🦋

Years ago, I heard a saying which goes something along the lines of 'Don't compare - don't despair'. I think of this whenever I find myself thinking 'that's not good enough'. And now I'm learning to use the ideas gleaned from other videos as 'starting points' from which I will 'go for a wander' - without worrying about where I end up. 🧡💚🤎

No no no Barbara, it is Brayed Furlap. I need to hear you say it!! I think there should be a color made that is called that just so we can hear you say it! About the creative block: it seems that it is caused more by our own thoughts and expectations than by an actual lack of creativity. I hope Suzy will be kind to herself so she can simply enjoy the creative process again. 🍀💖

Yes, I agree - often it's our own thoughts that trip us up. We have expectations of where we 'should' arrive, so we don't even start. That's why 'baby steps' can be helpful. In my case, I have soooo many ideas, I'm sometimes can't decide which one is 'right'. However, I'm learning that starting, and heading off in whatever direction is ok. I go for 'wanders' and see where I end up - often with surprising results. 😉And yes - Barbara's use of Brayed Furlap is totally endearing, and it's one of my favourite colours - along with Morrest Foss.🧡💚🤎

…/hug My heart breaks for you both. I’ve been stuck in a world of lack of motivation for months now. Not desire, I have the desire & like you, I have a large craft area & loads of supplies & even heaps of ideas, I just can’t get started. So lately I’ve started sneaking up on creating. Instead of sitting down to create, I just sprayed a few new spray stains that I bought, on a piece of paper then walked away & let it dry. When I went past my desk again, I did a little more spraying & so on until I was happy with it. Now I’m going to do a bit of stamping, then I’ll eventually paint some letters & tear them up & I’ll have a cool alphabet. Yeah it’s taken me a week but I’m getting those little bursts of happy when I do something. And I’m also going easy on myself. It’s not because I’m lazy, I’m just battling a very annoying, severe depression, so I just need to be a bit kind to me for now until I get myself back. And in the meantime, it’s ok to take a break. It doesn’t mean you have to quit forever. Or sneak up on crafting until the bug bites & puts you back in your chair happily. Or make it a social thing & try a local art/craft group to get some joy back. And be kind to yourselves 💕
