Todd Shaw/Too $hort IS THE BAY! He was ahead of his time with an independent mindset. I remember walking to elementary school with my brother listening to Freaky Tales and Dope Fiend Beat with our boom box....our mother would be MORTIFIED if she knew haaaa. Fast forward to his Player's Ball/album release party in Downtown Oakland....I was there! By pure luck, me and my BFF sat with the late great Easy-E and Mrs. Shaw. I still have the photos and my backstage sticker in my photo album. One of the best nights of my life! We won tickets off of KMEL. Oooooh the 80s and 90s were the best times EVER.

All things considered, I agree with just about everything Too Short said -- in particular, what he mentioned about Oakland & violence: as a Child, I spent part of my formative Years in Oakland, living in various Neighborhoods, between 1984, & 1990 -- at the time, I didn't notice how undesirable the living conditions were, for some of the Residents, including myself, in part -- I was totally oblivious to the Violence, Prostitution, Drug Abuse, & Overall Poverty, that was around me -- it wasn't until I got older, that I realized in large part, how dangerous Oakland was & still is, until this Day: in spite of it all, I still visit, occasionally: for what it's worth, Oakland has a special place in my Heart, somewhat.

Too Short had a lot of foresight to recognize he had to get out of Oakland. From a business standpoint, he saw that Atlanta was a new area that he could make his kind of music, get a new audience and extend his career. From a social and personal safety perspective, the streets would have been so wild that some young gangster wouldn't have thought twice about letting off on someone and possibly killing him. It's great to see he understood life but sad to see how many of our people are so quick to kill each other over nothing.

Short and Ant Banks had great chemistry. Short's sound really came alive with that Ant Banks bass. When he moved to Atlanta his sound definitely changed. Similar to when Snoop went to No Limit. It just didn't sound right. Short needed Banks the same way Snoop needed Dre. That's not to knock the producers in Atlanta. Dallas Austin was amazing. But certain vocal styles and beat styles are a better match. Ant Bank's beats were slower with a heavy 808 and thundering bass lines. Short's rhymes were made for those kinds of beats.

I disagree, I think it really helped his career to have southern sounds to bring a broader audience which helped even if it didn’t sound right from your point of view.

Leaving California for other cities and states was the norm back in the 90's especially in LA and Oakland due to thousands of bodies being taken away. Boyz In the Hood and Menace II Society really tell it like it was. Tre and Brandi leaving for Atlanta to go to Spelman and Morehouse. Caine, Ronnie, Sharif, and Stacy leaving to Kansas.

CJ Rich Everybody thinks they are the hardest...I am not saying Oak Park aint hard. But you know there is different levels. compared oak park and it aint no 69 or Brookfield or Murder dubs or Seminary or West Oakland.. I remember some dudes from Sac tried to flex at the Festival at the Lake back in day and got chased out of the Town. Even LA niggas used to they passes revoked. Sac is cool but it but it Aint the Town.. there is nothing like it.

There was a Movement in Atlanta during that time. It was amazing. Not just folks from the Bay. Dudes from New York came through buying building's. Jermain was working with old school rappers like Whodini. Digital Undergroud, Tupac, Arrested Development, Every Black Comedian could be found looking for the party in the party. Everybody was in Atlanta. It was Amazing how Too Shorts house was wide open. I had good times there, at the Hawks games, in the clubs, in the Very Many recording studios. So much good energy and entrepreneurship was in Atlanta.
