This was a monster hit for Levi Stubbs and the 4 Tops in 1966. It went to #1 on Billboard, Record World and R&B hit charts. They were something special in the 1960's. They were just one of the groups that help to propel Motown into and international music powerhouse and record producing company. They [4 Tops] are worth going down the rabbit hole.

I dig how the sax solo keeps the song rooted in rock and roll. When you're ready for more from The Four Tops, check out "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Bernadette" among their many other hits.

‘Bernadette, ‘ Baby I need your loving,’ were Masterpieces. 👍🏼I remember as a child thinking, how both their version and Johnny Rivers, were perfectly done. ‘I can’t Help Myself,’ was in 1965, Mel and Shawn.

Everybody has their favorite, and i agree that Levi was phenomenal, and i also put David Ruffin and Paul Williams of the Temptations with him, three beautiful lead vocalists.

@@user-sm2ql7nq4l Second, in my opinion, was David Ruffin of The Temptations, but he did not possess Levi's range. The 4 Tops were together for around 45 years. The members never changed. Can't say that about a lot of groups.

The Four Tops had lots of hits such as "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "Baby I Need Your Loving", "Ask the Lonely", "It's the Same Old Song", "Standing in the Shadows of Love" & "Bernadette" etc. The Temptations had a similar style & also had lots of great songs.

Levi was a natural baritone so singing this high was a strain for him, thus the "cry" in his voice. He told Barry Gordy of Motown, he wanted to sing in a lower register, but Gordy said not to change because the ladies loved that "cry". The ladies also loved his looks as he was a fine looking man.

Only death could separate the four tops ,no better lead than the late great Levi Stubbs . The song is from the mid 1960’s Motown records was re - released around 1970 in the U.K on EMI Tamla Motown U.K. label & a hit . Group members = Lead Levi Stubbs / Renaldo ‘Obie ‘ Benson / Lawrence Payton / & Abdul ‘Duke ‘ Fakir all born in Detroit USA . & started off singing Jazz songs & standards in mid 1950 ‘s ,by the time they joined Motown in 1963 they had become The Four Tops . Main man at Motown Berry Gordy. put them with Holland / Dozier Holland . Writers & producers & the hits began . Only Fakir now survives ,& still performs with new members ,sometimes on tour with the last original Temptations member Otis Williams & his current line up of Temptations.
