EXO used to have 12 members,4 of which were chinese Tao,Luhan,Kris wu,and Lay Them and couple other members made up exo-m (mandarin sub unit) until they decided to continue as exo-k because tao,luhan,and kris wu left sm entertainment and filed lawsuits due to mistreatment but lay stayed but shortly after decided to start his solo career and since china and korea dont have the best relations he decided to spend most of his time in china promoting his solo work which is why he hasnt really been active with exo since around 2018. I was actually not at all into K-pop but one year back I started listening to exo songs along with the songs of various bands. I'm shocked by everything they did and how they sounded and started fan girling over them. Then I got to that they were actually invited several times by the billboards way before bts. Their songs were on the top of the world records above the various American singers. But the thing is their company policies the SM entertainment never promoted neither allowed them to go to billboards due to their various reasons which kinda like gave the first chance to bts to go to billboards. As a fan of Tao and Lay, you may want to check out an earlier guide or at least one or 2 of the EXO-M versions. They have done well with their solo careers. The concept at the beginning was an interesting idea and NCT is trying something similar. I think it shows that good music can be in any language. As always I would be interested to see who becomes your bias.

each exo comeback they release two versions of the mv- korean and mandarin one, back in the days the mandarin version was done and promoted by exo-m members but since the members' departure exo has been releasin both versions as one unit of 9 people. Its the same song but just sang by different people in different language. The sub-units that were shown in the video consist of the members that are currently in the group, its a form of activity existing outside of exo with their own unique sounds and their own albums and concerts etc. The members still remain as part of exo though and they dont affect group activities. cbx for example happened because Chen Baekhyun and Xiumin felt that when exo wasnt promoting they had too much time on their hands so they were like "Hey why dont we create a unit to do smth about it and not stay bored" (it was mentioned in one of cbx's show; crazy what can you do when you're talented right😂) Exo-sc are actually coming back on july 13 with their second album!! They droping 3 mvs (like whaat???) plus they were casually spoiling their songs today on a vlive and were like "should we just drop an mv for this if we've already played the whole song??" and legit 3minutes later the mv was out lmao (its for one of the b-sides not the title track) ANYWAYS i feel like I've drifted from topic The military is mandatory for every male in korea and it lasts for around 2years for idols (normal citizens have it longer), after the service is completed they comeback to their groups. In the guide there was mentioned that Baekhyun is leader of SuperM while Kai is its member. SuperM is a hybrid group made by SM consisting of members from different SM groups: EXO, nct, wayV and SHINee ('m sayin this cus you've said you're going to rewatch the guide and i didnt want you to get too confused)

sub units are basically just different music endeavors that a smaller amount of group members participate in. for example, red velvet’s irene and seulgi, Jus2 which is composed of yugyeom and jb from got7. nct also has a bunch of subunits like nct127 and nct dream. it’s kinda common for kpop idols to be put in multiple subunits or groups.

Ok imma try to help with stage name pronunciation real quick lol: Suho is correct. Sehun = Seh-hoon Baekhyun = Bae-kyun (no kyOON. The U makes the same sound as “sun”.) Lay was correct. Kai= not “kay”, or “kay-E” lol, just..the way u expect it to sound, with the strong “I” sound like when u say “I love candy” so: “K-eye”. Chanyeol = Chawn-ya’ll Xiumin = Shoe-min Chen was correct. And so was D.O. (Just Dee-Oh) Hope that helps clear things up a bit! 👍🏼 We all had to learn at some point so you’re good haha. (And the video also forgot to mention that Kai is also good friends with Jimin from BTS 😌. So basically-he, Taemin, and Jimin form a holy trinity of dance gods lol)

EXO on Knowing Bros is just about the funniest thing I have ever seen. Both appearances are PRICELESS comedy. Knowing Bros is a skit/entertainment show where the hosts pretend to be students in a classroom. Every week celebrities come in as "transfer students". They do a goofy combination of interviews, games, quizzes, and performances. EXO episodes are available on You Tube with English subs. FYI Hee-chul from SuperJunior is one of the regulars. Also a must-watch is Chen's episode of "Studio Music Hall". This is a really cool show where (again) Hee-chul invites his favorite artists to perform live in a studio with a live band. There is also a famous song-writer and a music critic on the host panel. It's just a mind-blowing performance. You can find an English sub on KZfaq of this, too.

It's not an exaggeration when I say that Exo has the best vocal line in kpop. Baekhyun, D.O. and Chen are the best main vocalists in Kpop and Kai is one of the best if not the best dancer kpop has ever had (Lay too)

The main song throughout the video is Butterfly Effect by EXO (from their Obsession album). Most of the songs showcasing each member are solo songs in some way, *except* Wind of Change that Chanyeol covered, Growl which was shown during D.O.'s section but is an EXO song, Closer To You shown during Sehun's section is by the EXO-SC subunit, and Gravity also shown during Sehun's section is an EXO song. (Besides those exceptions,) some are official solo work, some are STATION songs, and some are solo stages for their concerts. Technically, currently Lay, Chen, Baekhyun, and Suho are the members who have had official solo debuts. The names of the songs are in the upper left-hand corner of the video, if you didn't notice. "Levi X Kai" isn't a song, though; that's more of a reference to the original video. Remember that name order is changed in Korean. So, when you said Doh is D.O.'s first name, it's actually his surname/last name. Center means he is usually in the center or front during choreography. EXO-K and EXO-M were more so subgroups in the way of splitting the full group into two, one for each language and market. The subunits CBX and SC are more along the lines of fixed units that have their own music separate from EXO. EXO-K and EXO-M released the same music, just under the two subgroups, again, one for each language and market. K for Korean. M for Mandarin. The 3 former members of EXO are Chinese, so it was closer to an even split, unlike now. After those members left, the subgroup concept was abandoned, HOWEVER, EXO still releases everything in both Korean and Mandarin. Not all groups have subunits and from your reaction I'm guessing you don't follow any groups that do. Like I said before, subunits are units that have their own music separate from the full group. In all cases that I'm aware of (, NCT being the only exception I can think of,) the full group debuted first and then later on in their careers subunits may be formed. Not necessarily, but it's somewhat common. Usually subunits still have the full group name as part of the subunit name somehow, which is what EXO does and which certainly makes it easier for you. CBX and SC are just the first initials of the members in those subunits. Subunits can vary in terms of the number of members and specific members themselves. EXO so far does not have members that overlap in subunits, although 2 members are a part of SuperM. I typed all of this before you got to the history section of the video, but I'm still going to post it anyway for further explanation and clarification. Mandatory military enlistment is for 21 months, so after at least that amount of time members usually return to group activities. Of course, it also depends on if other members are enlisted at the time and other such things for what those activities include. But yes, after their enlistment Xiumin, D.O., and now Suho will continue with EXO. Not sure if I commented before, but I subscribed after watching your Obsession reaction. I listen to a lot of groups, but EXO is by far my ult group! :)

"Subunits" are a big part of K-pop. By having just a few members put out a record, it allows them to be showcased better. So, you might ask "Why not just make smaller groups to begin with?" Good question. If three guys are in a group and they all go to the military in the same year, basically they're over. A bigger group can continue to tour and put out music with subunits and remaining members as they rotate into and out of the military. Another reason is easy to understand by just looking at a single song performance. Look at all the work they do. If only 2 or 3 people had to share all the effort needed to do all that singing and dancing, they would be totally wiped out halfway into a concert. When seven, eight or nine people take turns, they can execute bigger dance moves and sing more powerfully because people have time to rest while someone else takes the spotlight.
