2 Years into ownership and I thought it was finally time to take my E46 M3 to the dyno. I'm curious to find out if after 20 years and 173K miles, there would be any significant power loss. I won't lie, I feel somewhat uncomfortable taking such a car to get pushed to it's limit at the dyno, but oh well. The goal is to find out how much power the car makes years later and to hopefully not break anything after a few pulls. The result? Very questionable!

e90 335i - n54, n55 after 2010 f30 335i - n55 only, pwg then ewg after 2014, 2014/15 MY also has less issues f30 340i - b58 only if you're looking at an f30 335i, i'd recommend finding one after 2014.

Sport mode does not increase power. It only alters the throttle mapping. Power differences between first and second runs fall within the margin of error/natural variation. 👍

@@joeyh3511 When you press the pedal down 10%, in normal mode it responds like it was pushed 10% - in sport mode it tells the engine computer you pushed it down 20% It does not change anything about the engine tune - it does not alter timing, VANOS maps, or anything else. Later M engines (S85 notably, which went from 400hp to 500hp in M mode) did this, but the S54 did not

These driving machines don't have a "PCV valve" They have what BMW calls an "oil separator" the separator in this particular vehicle is integrated into the valve/rocker cover with a plastic vent line from there to the intake. On high mileage vehicles like this one...more than likely the system may be a bit clogged causing some oil to enter the intake system. Cover removal and proper cleaning may resolve this issue. Love these machines a pure drivers car. One or 2 roll in my shop a month from just maintenance to major repairs. One thing thou...the customer is always willing to spend the $$ to repair them.

That smoke is probably just blow by, maybe a catch can will help? Doesn’t explain why it only smokes on decel though. Either way keep us updated, good video!

A good clean example of a manual M3 here in the US I'd around 25k-35k, a convertible SMG is going for around 18k+

I wish I still had my e60 535xi. Word to the wise to n54 owners , don't leave your oil filter housing gasket leaking ,not even a little bit. It'll eventually shred your serpentine belt, and get sucked into the front crank seal and you'll end up losing oil pressure and in turn destroys the engine . When it happened to me back in 2014 ,nobody knew that this was a common problem yet . Not even the dealership. Quoted me at 10k to fix it . I still owed 10k on it as well so I let them repo it ,even though I do regret it to this day .

Get a leak down test. Your car should be making 300rwhp with zero smoke. My 2005 model still does. No blow by. No oil consumption. I have ALWAYS let the oil temp warm up to a full 190 F before exceeding 3K RPM. I am sure that has helped a great deal. I have NO idea what you are talking about. Your exhaust combo has zero rasp. Sounds as good as it can get with the S54. Much better than mine. I need better mid pipe resonators.

@@VehicleVirals Oh, right. The OEM mid pipe is truly horrible. You have the THE BEST sounding muffler for the S54 and the headers with no cats. The mid pipe you want is quite expensive and is hard to find since it is out of production. BUY ONE and your exhaust note will be rasp free and sound very much like a Ferrari from 6K RPM to red line. Borla mid pipe. Close to a grand with shipping. BUY ONE!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eN98iMaKt9iVl5s.html exhaust You may have to reach out to buy one on the used market. Use your contacts. Trust me on this. It would make your S54 sound better than any other exhaust combination.

Dont know your mid pipes but your car has almost zero rasp compared to stock. Its all in the midpipes. RE El Diablo muffler is the best overall choice for tone too. My AA Mustang dyno tuned E46 M3 makes 301 to the wheels. I have seen them close to 400 recently with cutting edge tunes and Karbonius CSL airboxes made from cf. My S54 does not smoke even a little or burn a drop of oil in between 4500 mile oil changes. 110K miles. Super snug rings still, I guess. I am a huge fan of letting oil temp get to 190 before going over 3k RPM. I am certain this has helped the motor greatly.

Closer to 400 with a stroker kit is my guess. I might have found what the issue is as far as smoke. Don't think it's anything serious.

@@VehicleVirals What was it? About 375 with out touching the bottom end. Intake, exhaust, and exotic tune only! Very expensive for modest gains. But there are plenty people who have done it. Usually using the Karbonious. Some tunes even come out of Dubai!

My honest guess was 292hp and 238tq I was so close. Also my E46 330Ci has 13% drivetrain loss I don't think you're accurate expecting 20% from your M3. 20% is more AWD cars, they say FWD is usually 10-12% and RWD is 13-14%. All depends on the age of the car and the design of the parts and everything but there's def not 20% loss on an M3. Your crank is prob putting in 327hp not 347.

Well my E46 M3 is at 200,000 miles, but I had a dyno probably 10,000 miles ago. My car is almost exactly stock aside from being lowered, having a k&n air filter not intake just the air filter, and having a Cat-Back. I still have the stock exhaust system with cats before the cat back and my intake is still stock also. I have to find the dino graph, but I believe the numbers were almost exactly the same.

Probably valve seals the smoke, same problem on my e90. Part costs cheap but labour will get ya. All it is doing burning oil can tell also by the colour of the smoke, nothing major.

Love watching your channel! Funny thing is I have a 335 coupe and was modding it pretty much when you were doing yours then I ended up getting an e46 m3 for $3k pretty much when you got yours except mine has a little bit higher miles. I’m in Canada, I got mine with 308,000km got 315,000k on it now and it’s running hard with evolve tune and active autowerk headers

@@coryheat1025 I’ve known the owner for a long time, I wasn’t shopping for the car it kind of fell in my hands and I couldn’t pass up. It needed a vanos rebuild, and the chain guide was broken, I also had to do the valve shims. Body was a bit rough but not bad so I ended up doing a full underbody restoration like @redishmotorsports in the uk does and painting the whole car

@@coryheat1025 didn’t miss a step when I was doing it. Literally stripped the whole underbody bare painted it and powder coated everything. New bolts new bushings new clutches in the diff. I probably could have bought one with lower km by the end of it but my car is now immaculate. One day I’ll do an engine rebuild

It could be the oil separator in the valve cover or the little PCV valve that connects from the oil pan to the intake box that's dirty and sticking open, it happen to me before, cleaned it with some SeaFoam intake cleaner, and it didn't stick anymore.

I can almost guarantee that’s your CCV Oil Separation Unit, Most likely it’s faulty/clogged and the oil is getting into your intake manifold and eventually cylinders and burning out exhaust. Oil catch can should solve the problem.

If I was you I would have the vanos checked out. It may be time for a rebuild. I rebuilt mine my self. It's a simple and straightforward process. With that many miles on your car best to safe then sorry. I do most of my own work on my e46 m3.btw you can have a look at my channel. And the shirt is dope.i had to cop one.

I will never understand why people in the US doesnt messure the drivetrain losses and just guessing wild numbers :D I mean you got the dyno why you messure only the wheel power and not the losses to get the real number and instead just guessing how much it maybe is .... strange.

So what is the cause of the smoke plume after your run. That's not blow-by. No way. I'd be surprised if it actually is. That much smoke. That's a lot. Especially under full throttle.

Might just be blow by. Only smoked under deceleration.

Typically an engine suffering from blow-by will smoke when the RPMs are low. Then when throttle is applied the oil build up is burnt and you get smoke. But under load. Say full throttle. There really isn't chance for that to happen. So much fuel is going into the cylinder head that any oil that gets past the rings is also burnt. You might see a small cloud. But not a big cloud. It could be blow-by. But I doubt it.

Maybe a tiny bit, it made good power. 333 is what they make at the crank, plus Christian has ~20hp in mods/tune. Add ~20% drivetrain loss, and you get 282HP. That's about right.

@@dukedub It really depends, varries from car to car, drivetrain to drivetrain. Could also have mods that reduce the drivetrain power loss. Some people say 10-15%, some say 20-25%. I just did 20%. AWD definitely has the most, I'd say in that 20-25% range. FWD with the least probably 10-15%, and RWD is somewhere in the middle.

Not sure, this was my first time doing it so it's not like I have a lot of experience. I do have the traction light on continuously which wasn't there before. But I'm not sure if that's related to the cluster change or something else.
