@David Hannigan what people don't get about tool is the brilliance of the song construction. Yes, they will go all in on a riff for multiple measures but there is a purpose to it. It's sets the stage for the music to become atmospheric when Maynard sings, so the vocals and the message stand out. I understand that some people have that "ADD" quality to them and need to jump to that next thing immediately. Tool just isn't the band for them.

This is even more important, in that Justin, Adam, and Danny write the songs completely free of a vocal part. Once they are complete, Maynard lays over a melody. As a separate process, it would be even easier to overshadow.

I gotta tell you, I've seen every comedy special of Bill Hicks's and I don't see the similarities. I don't see how this could be about Hicks at all. On the contrary, I've heard L. Ron Hubbard's name brought up which would make sense. Especially since they've mentioned L. Ron Hubbard in 2 other songs.

Seems a little angry to be about Hicks...someone they clearly respect and agree with. "Would you die for me? Don't you fuckin' lie!" They would never talk to the late, great Bill Hicks this way. L. Ron makes much more sense to me...or maybe even the big J.C.?

Yeah, I think this Hubbard thing is a hysteria spread by Tool fans for whatever reason. And if the song was made just to bash a specific messiah, it would resonate more about David Koresh than Hubbard, especially 'cause the band started to write this song right after the Waco siege. As you pointed out, Eulogy may be talking more about the dissipation of the ego. Maynard also uses the idea of crucifying his own ego in other Tool songs like Part of Me, Bottom and Reflection. AEnima's clearly a very jungian inspired album, a "psychospiritual" bridge to Lateralus, so we have to understand towards those concepts too.

It is in no way about... well... what you described... ya'know, not every fucking Tool song is about Maynard's "QUEST" for enlightenment"... oh wait... actually NONE of them are... particularly because Maynard is not (nor is anyone else in the band) *"enlightened"*...he'd be the first one to say as much... (ESPECIALLY in a room full of fucking Tool fans)... and he'd be saying it the loudest (with a beautiful voice as well, lol!)... His songs aren't about reaching elightenment, like some Tool fan's might desperately proclaim and believe... if anything, the closest thing to that sentiment would be that many Tool songs are about introspection on a particular subject or aspect of Maynard's self, or life, or an experience... or a sort of personal meditation on such archetypal motifs as saaayyy... a grudge, or a communication breakdown with a loved one, or our need to vicariously experience violence and suffering, or the birth of his son, or a traumatic episode in his childhood, or his anger, hatred, and frustration with Los Angeles, or a psychedelic trip, or an unhealthy relationship with a spouse, or the death of his mother, or addiction, or closely-conscious inspection of his shadow-self, or his deep, deep (yes, pun intended, lol!) appreciation for anal sex because it's four degrees warmer than the vagina, or perhaps coming to a realization about how beautiful, and fleeting, and precious, and boundless, and ephemeral, and delicate, and exciting this existance is as this being, this conciousness, alive in this temporary corporeal form, and how we should be aware of that fact and thankful for it... And yes, obviously I am talking about Parabol/Parabola when I said that... which in my opinion, is probably the very closest Tool has ever gotten to echoing the idea, or sentiment in your comment... But it's still not about being enlightened or even a quest for enlightenment... its just what I said it was... a simple acknowledgment of realizing how precious and "holy" our existence in this otherwise temporary material shell, and how our true self, all which we should hold as truly important is the eternal self, the spark of consciousness that exists within that shell... even that's not enlightenment... that's a simple truth to anyone who is even a little bit "woke" when it comes to these matters. I'm fully aware of that fact and concept, and not only agree with it conceptually but have felt it as this deeply *real* and intangible, but palpable... *something*... feeling... whatever you wanna call it... but in no way is that enlightenment, and in no way am I enlightened. I'd have to say the Tool songs that come the very closest to being about what you're thinking about as "enlightenment" would have to be, of course, Parabol/Parabola as stated above, "Lateralus", "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" (but more specifically "Reflection"), "46&2", and I guess you could say "Third Eye"... And I'd say none of these are actually about Maynard *being enlightened*... they're about deep introspection and deep meditation into one's self and psyche... but that's all... "Parabol/Parabola" I've already touched on... 2 of those songs are about very close, serious, and meditation and introspection with the specific motive and intention to confront the "shadow-self", or the "dark-side" of one's psyche and persona, in order to pull out kernels of truth about one's self, and in turn grow from what you've learned from within... which is "46&2", and "Reflection" (and honestly, to a lesser extent, Third Eye, because some aspects of that song are about confronting the shadow-self... and specifically in the context of a very intense psychedelic experience)... Now Lateralus, I'd say is like a tie with "Parabol/Parabola" for being closest to this concept of enlightenment... But even "Lateralus" isn't about enlightenment... and CERTAINLY not about Maynard himself being enlightened... it's about raising your level of consciousness, and being more "woke" in general... and basically finding the desire to learn more about your consciousness and your self and your psyche, and a connection to spirituality of some sort... a connection with some sort of mysticism or esoteric knowledge or occult knowledge... or whatever it is that grabs hold of the individual to dig deeper into that connection with the spiritual and elevate you above the prospect of just being another mindless robot, just another vapid, empty, soulless individual with no depth to their spirit and their consciousness and their awareness... Its just about starting out at square one and finding whatever it is that piques your interest into the great beyond and following that thread to wherever it takes you and being open to whatever path it takes you on, as long as it raises your level of consciousness or your appreciation for what I mentioned in talking about "Parabol/Parabola"... (And honestly, I personally think that Lateralus is about all that, but in connection and conjunction with the psychedelic experience... but that could just be my personal interpretation of it in context of my own experience)... but it still isn't about Maynard becoming "enlightened"... You may actually think "that's totally becoming enlightened, what you described there"... but no... no it isn't... not at all... becoming more conscious in general is a HUGE fucking LEAP from achieving enlightenment... the average person will NEVER reach enlightenment... if it is even TRULY attainable by someone in the modern world, connected to this modern infrastructure and modern society, and not holed up in some monastery, meditating with a bunch of monks 18 hours a day, every day for their whole life... I seriously doubt it is possible for someone like you, or me, or Maynard at all... Keep in mind, that actual "enlightenment" is becoming FULLY aware... it's reaching NIRVANA... it's not opening your third eye... it's not having an intense and introspective trip... it's not truly deep introspection... its... fucking... ENLIGHTENMENT... and in my opinion its a word that's thrown around WAY too lightly... And I'm not sure if that's what you're doing... throwing that word around too lightly, or truly think that Maynard is actually an enlightened individual. By the way... all that aside, even whether Maynard is enlightened or not, this song STILL is nowhere NEAR being about a conversation between Maynard and his ego... and is in no way projecting the characterization of this voice on the pulpit, this martyr on the cross, this man who'd die for you, as being some sort of personification of some aspect of his self... ego... or any other sense... It is actually about true false prophets who actually try to lead people as some sort of Messiah, and is a scathing indictment of that type of person and how they pretty much are just dirt... But either way... Maynard isn't on a quest for enlightenment... he's not enlightened... and his music isn't about how fucking awesome and enlightened he is. Its deep, it's introspective, it's meditative, it's psychological... but it's not about how enlightened he is. Honestly, the funny thing is, in a way... YOU are MAKING this song about Maynard the way you're talking about him being enlightened... because in a way he's has unwittingly and unintentionally become this sort of prophet figure for legions of Tool fans who literally think he's this holy being, sort of messiah or prophet, merely because he writes beautiful, deep, and conscious lyrics that stand so far apart from his contemporaries and peers... That there's a whole giant subset of his fans who actually believe he's this messiah-like figure... I'm sure it annoyed the FUCK out of him forever, but I'd imagine he now finds it pretty hilarious... but in the end, by becoming this unwitting prophet, people who think he's this enlightened being have shoehorned him into the role of the subject of this song... lofnl... I find that hilarious... and honestly, I think he'd find that deliciously ironic and a fucking hoot to boot! lofnl! P.S. Maynard said that is not about one particular figure, but more about the idea of a man standing up and preaching lying to everyone. It's not about Jesus Christ, it's more about all those preachers (including L. Ron Hubbard) in the US and especially in California (remember that the Ænima album deals a lot with California and L.A. in the 90s).
