In an interview with Danny Carey, DC said that this song is about a friend of theirs that tripped on acid/DMT and told them some elaborate story about being abducted by men with brief cases, etc.. Maynard found it amusing and it inspired this song

This song is one of tools best songs in my opinion. It has EVERYTHING we like from tool, excellent musicianship, witty humour, and some form of message that lies just under the surface that you kind of need to dig a bit to find. This is definitely one of the most complicated songs theyve written musically too, but its so well written it doesnt even feel that complex. It flows perfectly even though its packed to the brim with polymeter and polyrhythm. Just an absolute work of art and to me its one of the crown jewels of this band.

This song is 100% about full-blown astral travel during a high dose psychedelic experience and the Messianic delusion that can often accompany such experiences. Poking fun at the Leary/McKenna types who think they found the answers by getting high all the time.

This particular song just has insane depth , musically , emotionally and lyrically , and i mean beyond the obvious usage of drugs , its so much about the psychology and a reaction of someone trying to find some meaning or truth behind it and how much those thoughts can reveal to you insecurities or strengths and the list keeps on going. When i first heard of this song , I thought to myself this is literally the closest to someone can verbally explain the madness that is tripping , tip-toeing on that makes sense but it doesn't. You can vicariously experience the trip.

Josh Moore I mean even in 7empest he’s hyper conserved and doesn’t do anything crazy. Never breaks out into shredding, which is good for Tool. Just saying, a standout guitar song for Tool isn’t as intense as your average power metal showpiece. Not a criticism, just an observation.

Loved the review! Epistemology is my favorite too Vin! Its a deadhead thing. Us Dudes like me, we talk metaphysics, axiology, and epistemology all the time. Philosophy is the favorite subject of us psychonaughts as we call ourselves. When you experience altered states of consciousness to the levels we do, it raises endless questions and we sit around theorizing about the nature of life. You get deep into subjects like chaos theory and determinism for example which seems oddly familiar to God and Free Will if you think about it. Multiverse theory... All kinds of absolutely fascinating thought experiments you run by each other. That's that deadhead chemistry. 😝 we love it! Are we going deep within or are we travelling outside ourselves? That's another talking point you can spend days discussing. One take away is most people, not all but most come away with a distinct and very real feeling of an eternal soul. A sense of purpose beyond this life. Then we discuss it with each other. It is a BLAST! Anyway, thanks again for everything you have done for me. I talk too much 😄 so I'll stop now. Love you guys Tim

@@timothyeubanks32100 well brother, cousin, brother/cousin (I do come from KY after all), it's never too late to start! There is a whole universe of music, art, culture and magic to discover within the Deadhead world if you so desire! I'm not one of those guys that's gonna give you dates and stadiums and years to check out the live shows. There are just too many. All I can say is that it's truly worth the time to check out Grateful Dead and if it clicks, it clicks! Definitely not for everyone. It is however impossible to deny the impact they had on forging the psychedelic community's very existence and that is something a psychonaut must at least respect. And like anything else, there are good and bad people who love the band. The music is what really matters. All the other stuff is just extra ;) Anywho, I always loved that reference in Rosetta Stoned (2 actually)

This is one of my favorite tool songs......an absolute masterpiece of time signature changes and drumming. Danny really really flexes on this one. Watch john kew (KZfaqr) cover this on the drums.

He’s talking about an acid trip gone wrong, out in the desert by Nellis Air Force Base, which contains Area 51. He says “it must’ve been the dead head chemistry, the blotter got right on top of me.” Dead head chemistry is a reference to LSD and how Grateful Dead fans, also referred to as Dead heads, would manufacture and use LSD quite often. A blotter is the “tiny stamps” that are used to dose LSD.

The irony Sori thinking you must believe in something like Aliens and you would have to be crazy but god sure no problem:)

rx7dude2006 not ironic one bit. Makes perfect sense actually. A god existing is the only logical conclusion to the question of where did everything come from. Take the Big Bang theory for example. Where did that original pinpoint of matter come from? What makes more sense? That a single dot of matter has existed for a prior eternity or a god existed for an eternity?

Capitaomac1 there is no logical answer to that other than to say if there really is a god, one true real god, why would anything need to create it or come before it. My point is that a god existing for eternity makes more sense than some tiny ball of matter existing for eternity.

@@billbrasky1288 well, why? Why is it easier to believe in a self made entity before a tiny matter particle reacting to something in the void?

Vin was right AND Sori was right. The song is about a trip on hallucinogenic drugs (LSD = Blame "Albert" Hoffman), where the protagonist was tripping, but believed he had been abducted by aliens...or maybe really was, which would've REALLY been a hell of a trip.

This song is all about a DMT trip based on a true story outside of Area 51. This is supposedly a story that was recounted to Maynard. Shitting the bed is another way to say I fucked up or you screwed up. It's not literally shitting the bed. The beginning of Lost Keys is the tripper being taken to a hospital and recounting the story to a Doctor(Maynard)
