This song has the most time signature and tempo changes of any song I've learned. I can play the notes and i got the timing...getting the effects and tone down on the guitar is downright impossible. starts in 12/4..then 4/4 & 5/8 alternating, then 6/4 for a bit before it switches to 11/8 for a bit, then has a weird shift with 2 bars of 9/8 to 4/4 and back to 9/8 before a single bar of 7/4 to continue with 5/4 for a few bars, a 6/4 rest, and then 11/8 for a while. Then the solo has danney carrey doing a 3/4:5/4 polyrhythym (and brings in a 4/4 halfway thru just for good measure.) all while the guitar does a solo in 5/4 timing. The bass is doing that polyrhythym as well. This song somehow all fits together and is perfectly mathematically sound. A musical masterpiece.

I never understood why people always recommend new listeners of Tool to listen to this song. There's a shit-ton of stuff going on lyrically, rhythmically and harmony wise and unless you're familiar with the general motifs in their music and Maynard's sense of humor, you'll have a really hard time appreciating this song. This is the song you should be listening to after you've heard a couple of albums from Tool, not your 2nd (technically 3rd) song. Much better songs to introduce somebody to Tool are: Jambi, Vicarious, Stinkfist, Aenema, Forty Six & Two or Opiate.

This is one of their more experimental songs. It's better once you know the story behind it. It's almost a comedic track.

Edit: also this song is about someone who has taken DMT and trips the meeting with the Aliens giving him the meaning of life. apparently lots of people have this same trip when taking DMT Vicarious and Lateralus are my favourite tracks can't wait for your reactions

I believe Jambi would be something that would resonate more with the vibe that got you into The Grudge, Jim. On Rosetta Stoned, if you want to dive deeper, I suggest hopping over to the johnkew channel. I find it easier to see all the complexities in the song when I'm watching him play. His second channel, johnkewdrums, has a 20-minute analysis of the time signatures when he was studying to do the cover. He has one about The Grudge as well.

Just a shame about some of the lyrics, a few mistakes. "like the time Dave floated away" as in Space Odyssey And "Bob help me" near the end, in the typical placement of "God".

Tool flat out says in a interview that their music isn’t something you can just tap your feet to. They want you to experience their music . Most of their music will put you into a hypnotic state of mind and send you on a journey if you let it. I suggest Aenima . Very hypnotic trance kinda track. And you will be in a different place in you mind.

Keep going man! You're in for a ride. A brief primer: Opiate/Undertow: Established their unique blend of crunchy/heavy guitars, primal intensity and intelligent lyrics and concepts. Songs of note: Opiate, Prison Sex, Bottom, Sober, Undertow, Flood Aenima: Maintained the crunchy heaviness and intensity, but evolved a step further. Songs became a little more complex both structurally and conceptually, a little deeper emotionally, and longer in length. More melodies were incorporated, interesting/weird segues were introduced, and overall, everything sounded just a little bit more mature and epic. Songs of note: Stinkfist, Eulogy, H., 46 & 2...well, shit. Just listen to the whole album. Lateralus: The next step in Tool's evolution. While still deep, raw, and emotional, this time it felt less angsty and angry, and more about positivity and self-improvement/enlightenment. Song concepts explored different emotional states of being a human: holding a grudge, staying patient in the midst of adversity, communicating to save a relationship, being grateful to be alive and staying present, exploring outwardly to discover and enrich your life, etc. The whole thing had a little more of an Eastern feel. Alex Grey's artwork was introduced (as you saw on The Grudge). Almost like an out-of-body experience more than listening to a music album. A complete epic, and IMHO, Tool at their best. Songs of note: The Grudge, The Patient, Parabol/Parabola, Lateralus, Disposition/Reflection/Triad 10,000 Days: Seemed to build off the Lateralus sound, while revisiting some of the elements in their back catalogue ("The Pot" had a bit of a "Prison Sex" vibe, for example. And "Rosetta Stoned" was reminiscent of "Third Eye" off the Aenima album.) To me, this felt like more of a side-step than a progression in their evolution, but still a very solid release - highlighted by the lead singer's Magnum Opus to his late mother, "10,000 Days/Wings for Marie." Probably the one you'll get the most requests on simply because it's the most recent. Songs of note: Vicarious, Jambi, 10,000 Days/Wings for Marie, The Pot Cheers!

Currently learning this on bass. I love the epic nature of the song and operatic vocals contrasted with rediculous lyrics.

This song is actually part 2 of a 2 part song. The previous song on the album 10,000 Days, "Lost Key (Blame Hoffman)", is the introduction to "Rosetta Stoned." The song itself is from the perspective of a person on an "trip". The beginning is him being able to vividly describe what he experienced during the beginning stages of the trip. As the timing signatures and pace of the song change, so do the characters attitudes towards himself and his current reality. The part of the song where he mentions "$#!% the bed..." has a double meaning. In some older cultures, the phrase "s*** the bed" is in reference to forgetting to do something, or "dropping the ball" so to speak. But due to the persons current reality, one or more of the instances it is in a literal sense. I suggest listening to both songs together for a broader experience on this song. It's nice to see someone discovering this band and these songs for the first time.

'Right in two' is an incredible tool song with poignant lyrics to boot

When I saw them preform this song live it sounded so different. Maynard sounded like he was rapping the entire first couple of minutes. It was confusing but in retrospect it was very amazing

That was a pretty intense choice for only your second song. You should probably check out their more accessible songs like The Pot and 46&2.

Not that they ever fall short, but the bass lines on this album are all especially good. I think I read somewhere that when they were writing Justin had a lot of stuff he brought to the table first this time around.

Jumped right into the deep end from the start. This is one of their songs that, to understand it well, you have to take weeks to digest each part, break it down, especially Danny Carey’s polyrhythms. If you look at it as each part, and realize that Carey is playing 3 different time signatures at once, then you’ll understand how phenomenal of a song this one is

The song is take on Bill Manspeaker going out to see the integratron in Landers California. When he went to Tool's rehearsal spot, He told crazy elaborate stories with fear in his voice about being abducted by aliens, talking about U.F.O's, and jumping all over while kind of being "scatter brained" trying to explain it. This all quoted by Danny Carey and members on a KZfaq clip. Maynard then wrote a song about his way he interpreted the encounter. My view: The song was Maynard's take of the whole ordeal which seems to hint a little sarcasm at someone's psychobabble rhetoric and or prophet like persona of quite possibly a hallucinogenic induced experience

This was on their setlist last year on their 2023 Fall Tour. First time seeing them live. Maynard still has the same endurance. (Fun Fact: Danny's Bass Drum's are so low and loud live it almost restarts your heartbeat to his rhythmic time signatures.)

For a new Tool fan, this would be one of the last songs I would recommend. This one takes a number of listens to really appreciate along with a lot of the 10,000 days songs. Have to review 46&2, Jimmy, Pushit, Eulogy, Lateralus, TIcks and Leeches, Jambi, Vicarious....too many to list really. It's really interesting to see them being discovered for the first time by so many. Truly one of the most unique an talented bands you will ever here. So different, bands cannot even copy them.

dont worry man, you jumped head first into the deep end on this one. This is one of those songs that takes some working up to. I would suggest something like 46&2, Stinkfist, Jambi, etc...the more "radio friendly" stuff to start off. Then I would take it album by album. They evolve A LOT from album to album. Their attitude, complexity, and sound all change drastically as they go on. Their music really is a very good representation of their state of mind at specific points in their life, and grows as they do. Although sometimes they do just like to fuck with the audience a bit lol.

From a lifelong Tool fan. Listen to the albums in their entirety. They are not meant to be broken up. Enjoy and spiral out!

I think you'd be surprised how much melody is actually in this once you listen to it a few more times. Especially in the bass part and percussion!

My favorite part is Justin and Danny from 7:04 to 8:14! My current overall favorite part of any tool song... I say 'current' because they've been my favorite band since the mid-90s and my favorite song rotates all the time.

Enjoy tool, there is a Lot of good songs, when you finish the album lateralus you can then listen Ænima and 10,000 days, and then with undertow and opiate, but I recommend you that order because of your reaction with the grugde and rosetta stoned.

This song is one of the greatest creations in music (aside from other Tool songs lmao, I agree that this one isn't quite as good as others), but it contains indepth story, comedy, tragedy, spontaneous intricate design and flawless execution, and delivers what it's trying to deliver in such a profound way. Sucks that you didn't listen to the intro "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman), but so glad you got the chance to experience it!

Listen to 9:56 again before judging the melody of this song, this climax is epic. That said, the song is written with an emphasis on rhythm, that's probably why the melodic section hits so hard. God damn, shit the bed.
