I have to concur. There are thousands of virtuoso shredders and rhythm guitarists who play astounding guitar lines. However for Jones his lines are very intricate but more importantly everything he writes is instantly memorable. If you can write a song and have people immediately. As well get them grooving and enjoy your music. That's the most important aspect of being a musician IMHO.

On a side note, at this juncture I have to at least admit the pure eeriness of the first song released from their past 4 albums have been spot on. Stinkfist - overstimulation from the computing/internet boom. Schism - A very strong divide between humanity just prior to 9/11. Vicarious - By 10,000 Days we were all somehow living vicariously through another. Fear Inoculum - COVID-19 pandemic hits. Obviously we can all somewhat see the path ahead but to write incredible songs about it and have the album released prior to it becoming reality is pretty incredible. Such a badass band in every single way.

@@NickGroves-iv7mx only tempest and pneuma for sure. culling voices, i think, has them. the title track to fear innoculum is mostly orange, invincible is mostly rivera, descending is mostly orange again. i read the liner notes to the album, he thanks orange and rivera on them. he occasionally makes the third amp in his live setup a rivera, but its rarely for more than a show or two. he goes right back to two diezels and his longtime marshall. I'm also hearing EMG pickups on tempest, and on culling voices, who he also thanks in the liner notes. this is a bummer as EMG's kind of dominate over the sound of amplifiers, but the seymour duncan's adam uses rightfully allow the amplifier sound to be heard, and allow for a lot more articulation and difference in volume based on how hard he's picking. EMG's don't really allow for that. i don't hear any diezels anywhere on the entire 10k days album. if there are, joe baressi compressed and eq-ed them to the point to where they no longer sound like diesels. seriously i am fed up with how he's been screwing around with tool's sound.

Tool was one of those bands that brought the bass out of the background and placed it squarely in the foreground. Paul was crucial to that movement. Just listen to Intolerance and the bass is pretty much playing lead. My 20-year-old self at the time hadn't really heard anything like that before. That said, ultimately Paul wasn't a good fit as the band evolved, and Justin has stepped in to help shape the quintessential Tool sound. And I do LOVE Justin's playing. Sometimes I get chills listening to his basslines. In other words, both Paul and Justin are great, but they represent different phases of the band's evolution over the years.

@stopit29644 жыл бұрын
@@godhandvoid9795 paul helped get the band started but it wasn't better songwriting at all. not even sort of, not even kind of. with justin, they pushed EVERY SINGLE AREA of their songwriting to its peak potential: the super heavy side, the super soft side, the super middle eastern side, the super electronic influenced side, the lyrics, the vocals. all four instruments in the band individually got better, and the band chemistry improved. I've seen people like you go on and on about how tool was heavier with paul....uh, not a chance. maynard just screamed more back then. none of the heavy riffs from the paul era are even worth mentioning next to hooker with a penis, ticks and leeches, jambi, and 7empest, to name a few. the soft side expanded more on 10k days, intention, the salival live version of pushit (way more than the original version that they wrote with paul). paul is a great musician but justin smokes him. its just how it is.

Tool, Lollapalooza '97, loudest band I've ever heard, and I've been to more than 50 concerts. It was fucking amazing.

Yep. 97’, the second round of the Aenima tour was hands down the best. Just saw them the other night. They never disappoint. But if you saw them in 97’ you already know. I await the 20 year olds response to why I’m wrong.

as someone who's been playing guitar since 2001, I'm really sick and tired of all the shit that the super prog shred "everything has to be a solo" people giving adam jones shit. they look at the guitar tabs and see a 1 finger power chord in drop d sometimes and think he's not good, but after seeing tool for the first time from close to the front in front of adam, i just wanna say his style is so much more nuanced and his choice in chords is a lot weirder than people realize or can decipher through the gain. the music is so fucking fantastic that even if it was easy to play, it wouldn't matter, but he's doing a lot of little things in the songs that I'm not even sure how to describe (like the almost sweep arpeggio raking he does in the first soft half of invincible, and the pull off roll thing he does on jambi) he REALLY IS one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk this planet. not everything has to be a reverse tapping sweep on an 8 string.

Anyone criticizing Adam cannot and should not be taken seriously. They don't like how he plays? Fine. But to suggest any lack of quality or skill? They can point that finger up their ass and try to do better. Very few alive can!

Wow. Excellent. Saw them at Mohegan Sun in CT a week or so ago. This vid brought me back to my high school days when my boyfriend would drag me dozens of times to the midnight movie to see Rainbow Bridge just so he could study how Hendrix got those sounds out of his guitar. And then we'd go back to his house so he could try them on his own Strat! (I played bass!) So much sound from 4 guys!! LOVE Tool!!

Pureness. Each of them is entirely in the moment. Can you imagine that amount of focus and imagination?
