Steve goes through a DIY friendly approach to a check engine light and poor performance. The PCM is reporting a lean condition P0171and is adding as much fuel as it can. All that extra fuel is causing misfires and noxious exhaust.
We test the air/fuel ratio sensor, which was the cause of the problem and replace it.

Thanks for this video! I unfortunatley am not car handy at all. I have an 2004 (113k) and it smells like this for a few years now. I even took it to a shop because it was soooo gassy smelling and they told me it was fine, so I left it alone. But I know something is not right. I will have to find myself a better shop. Aside from the gas smell my Highlander haas been wonderful, but it needs some special attention now because I have slacked on all my maintenance for years. Thanks again for all your good advice!

So my wife's RX300 has the same 1MZFE v6 and a P0171 but unlike yours, both banks long and short term trims are nearlly identically increased 19% short and 52% long. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Check that the MAF sensor is reading correctly. If so, look for a vacuum leak. Probably around the intake manifold area.

Electronics are weird. My assumption is that moving it around made it ‘work’. Kinda like when you bang on the dash to get the fuel gauge to ‘work’.

Noticed that after you swap the o2 sensors, the long term FT reading from Bank2 didn’t change. Does bank 2 suppose get 50% fuel trim reading due to bad sensor?
@ToolDemos
@ToolDemos 2 жыл бұрын
I saw what you’re talking about and honestly can’t say for sure why that happened. My two theories on that are either programming or physical. It could be that the computer is programmed to correct over fueling more quickly than under fueling. Maybe to save the catalytic converter. On the other hand, it could’ve been the fact that I was handling that bad sensor and caused it to come back to life temporarily. Sometimes that happens with electrical devices if you tap on them a broken connection could be repaired for a short time.

This 2003 Toyota has the same sensors for the downstream and upstream. my 2002 Toyota has the same sensors and when I tried to replace them the A1auto shop and Auto Zone has two different sensors for my Toyota. They insist that I am wrong, I removed both the downstream and upstream and showed it to them and they said that according to VIN number Iam wrong. What do I do?
@ToolDemos
@ToolDemos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Omar. I wonder if this is just a communication issue. The Highlander has 2 upstream sensors and 1 downstream. The upstream sensors are screwed into the exhaust manifold, one on each side of the engine. The downstream is attached to the pipe, just after the catalytic converter. They all kinda look the same, but upstream sensors are air/fuel ratio sensors, it’s the one I replaced in the video, and are pretty expensive. The downstream sensor is a simple O2 sensor and is pretty cheap. Did that help?
@adamwoodworth5758
@adamwoodworth5758 Жыл бұрын
I'm going to try this....Sadly I have to start with cheap parts. If it lasts a little while will try and save up for better. Stupid question why not use cheap ones, can you clean ones you have or get rebuild. Thanks Oh and by watching several videos learned that's an a/f or air fuel ratio sensor...Not a oxygen sensor...very different but almost exact Looking part. And I can't even find a cheap one of those 😢
@ToolDemos
@ToolDemos Жыл бұрын
They are all very expensive. The cheaper ones will tend to send a signal that the computer does not like or understand and you will end up with the same problem. A good one like Denso will send a signal that the computer is expecting to see. Try rockauto.com that’s where I bought mine and the prices were much better.

What about if you change all the o2 sensors and the problem seems to get worse? Any ideas?
@ToolDemos
@ToolDemos 2 жыл бұрын
At this point, Vance you need to look at live data to see what the ECU is seeing. If you have a scanner, look at your fuel trims; they are the biggest clue to what your engine is doing. Compare that data to O2 sensor and MAP/MAF data. All of these are sensors record the way your engine is breathing.
