The creators of Toonami decided to make TOM’s sitting posture reminiscent of a child ready to go for a walk, and they gave TOM a simple walking animation which made him an adorable presence. The Toonami creators had to increase TOM’s size and add blue heat dissipation parts to his torso and feet, which resulted in TOM appearing chubby and cute. The blue stuff on his feet appear as though TOM was wearing fluffy boots.

I'm so glad this video is up, I'm 29 y/o, and have had the 1st Tom dying scene living in my head rent free since I was like 6 or 7. I've had no context to what was going on, just robot and lava creature. Today I found closure, and can't thank you enough for this video helping me figure out what I've been living with,😂 big TY!

See, when I was younger, I'd always have cable for a few months and then my parents would cancel the subscription willy-nilly for budget reasons. So one summer I'd first discover Toonami, then the following year get accustomed to it's format. I didn't have cable in 2000, and when I got it back in 2001, I saw TOM 2 and a somewhat changed decor. I was like "Dafuq happened here?" All my friends could tell me: "TOM died." And I was like, "Who dafuq is TOM?" Glad this clears that up. #Nostalgia

I remember watching this in the early 00's, this was I type of TV I still appreciate. What other network made a host, but put him in short videos in conflict, killing him, then reviving anew. Now 20 years later I come back, and realize we, we unhappy few, are in a generation of our own.

I recorded this on VHS when it happened. Nearly cried with I missed the fourth installment. Never thought I'd see the whole thing.

When i was younger i never really put two and two together of just how horrific Toms death was, and it took me rewatching it 20 years later to fully appreciate it. Toms voice goes from confident and heroic, to desperate and terrified in a matter of seconds after that laser blast fails. You can even see his hand being decayed as he desperately raises it up before being dissolved, almost like he can feel pain. It's over in seconds but for tom that had to be a miserable experience. This was ballsy back then to show on a kids network even for a robot

It was a huge relief that Tom can just be uploaded into a new body. Just like the robots in Futurama. When their robot body becomes obsolete, they just get uploaded into a newer body, and the old one gets recycled.
