I was 20. Hard to believe that it's already been 14 years. Today's high school kids would barely remember it, but 2000 was a great year for Toonami, with the U.S. TV debuts of Tenchi, Gundam Wing, Blue Submarine No. 6, Sailor Moon S (the first new episodes released in two years), and the beginning of the Cell Saga in DBZ. Also shown were reruns of Batman: The Animated Series, Reboot, and Ronin Warriors. Weekday afternoons in the late 90s & early 00s were great. I'd veg out in front of the tube on my days off and watch Toonami for three hours straight, and on work days I'd set my VCR to record it to watch when I got home (it was the pre-DVR days). The combination of Toonami and the old Cartoon Cartoons resulted in what was truly the Golden Age of Cartoon Network.

TheDarkSangheili I actually remember this show. I remember coming home from Montessori school (pre-K) and watch TV shows like Rurroni Kenshin, Mobile Suit Gundam (and other Gundam shows), Inyuyasha, Samurai Champloo, and others. This was Toonami at it's best.

I remember seeing this promo as a kid and even at that age thinking "Wow, this looks like the sexiest thing ever!" Having just watched the original 7 episodes of the OVA, I can safely say that it is the ultimate male wish fulfillment fantasy, not just because all the girls in it are beautiful, but because they're all really memorable, likable characters.

The best summer of my life, easily. Thirteen years old, not too young to be constantly tied to my parents and having no freedom, but not too old to have adult stresses and responsibilities. A lot of cool stuff happened that summer. I graduated eighth grade, and had no idea what high school was going to throw at me, three different oceanside vacations, camping trips, visits to state parks, pool parties. But then when it seemed like I was just sitting inside and there was nothing else to do, there was Toonami, and I was actually way more hyped for this show than I was any of the vacations I went on. I remember this ad played over and over, the show being teased literally for weeks before premiering. I was obsessed with DBZ at the time, and season three had just wrapped up, leaving us wanting more, with nothing new to watch. No streaming services, no DVD rips, no Crunchy Roll. What? A new anime is coming to the US? Nothing could have been more exciting. The most hilarious thing about this ad and the Toonami intro for the show is how action packed it makes the series seem, which is partially based in reality, but also played up big time to capture the 14-year-old DBZ demographic. I remember being really hyped because most of the female characters looked like DBZ characters with the huge, spiky, bright and colorful hair, but everything looked shinier and newer than anything from the world of Dragon Ball. And then that iconic shot of Ayeka and Ryoko fighting over Tenchi on top of the roof of the Masaki house made it seem like it wasn't going to be just mindless fighting, and the characters were going to spend their summer in the woods, just like I was. I always loved how it looks like someone with a camera on a crane is actually flying over them. Maybe this was going to be a more "mature" show than DBZ, but the art style still gave me a DBZ vibe, even though it seemed like something new and different. I remember in the TV series (not the OVA), there was an episode where Tenchi takes Sasami around a local summer fair or carnival, and watching that at 5:30 in the summer evening just seemed to fit so well. Super chill, not really dark and edgy or full of deep symbolism like Evangelion or something. Just capturing little life moments in animation. I'll never forget those times, when life moved much slower and you didn't have to constantly check your cell phone or answer work emails or mindlessly scroll through random stuff on the Internet. Maybe one day I can turn off all electronics, take some time off, go for a walk through the summer woods, and then come home to an episode or two of this show for old time's sake.
@thecardboardboxl3922 Жыл бұрын
That sounded amazing! Have you gotten around to taking a walk yet?
@gadpivs Жыл бұрын
@@thecardboardboxl3922 I've walked around my childhood town a bit, but not the woods specifically this summer. But I always manage to each summer once in a while. The time hasn't been right to do that at a specific time and then pair with watching anime haha.
@iekk55ippo379 ай бұрын
Yea i was 15 and felt the same: pretty new anime at that time in the world of dbz and sailor moon. It was amazing. The crazy thing is that it still holds up today, maybe even still surpassing some new anime in terms of design, animation, concept, and variety. To this day, i don't think any anime has played a bigger part in my life than this.

Weird how they merged clips from Tenchi Ryo-Ohki(OVA), Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo for this promo. None of these series actually had any relation to each other, besides having the same main cast of characters.
@SlimD71610 жыл бұрын
They did that because it's basically a promo for all three series since they showed all three one after another.
@dereknight8615 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Hell in the old days they used to put in footage of the first three DBZ movies as if they were part of the Anime series. EVEN THE FREAKING THEME SONG FOR CARTOON NETWORK DID THIS!
@koopakape4 жыл бұрын
@@dereknight861 Yeah... cuz it showcased high octane action with a great variety of characters, to show the series' strengths while conveniently hiding the fact that most battles were dozens of episodes long against the same handful of opponents with mountains of buildup :P Plus that stuff was all for the Ocean dub that only went the the first half of the namek saga, so they didn't have a huge amount of action content to even pick from other than the long fights against the saiyans (which were full of main characters dying) and early Namek stuff like Vegeta ruthlessly killing dudes and Krilling/Gohan getting brutalized
@TheFivegoodemperors3 жыл бұрын
They always advertised all the Tenchi shows as a continuation even though they were all essentially independent of one another. It was way confusing to go from the original 12 episodes to Universe or Tokyo and not know why they contradicted. Probably had to do with cartoon network getting all the rights to air them at the same time.
