In honor of the great Toots Thielemans, here are his performances and chats with Dave on Late Night:
1. August 11, 1982: Toots performs "Sophisticated Lady" and chats with Dave. He then plays "Bluesette" with the band during the commercial break. Upgraded here from a better video source.
2a. July 13, 1983 Rehearsal/British profile; Steve Khan subs for Hiram Bullock, and Neil Jason for Will Lee. Video borrowed, with gratitude, from here: • Paul Shaffer with Toot...
2b. July 13, 1983 (aired July 27, 1983): Toots performs "I Do It For Your Love" then chats with Dave. Plus the band plays "Bluesette" (without Toots) during the break. Another upgrade from a better video source.
3. May 9, 1984: Toots performs "Bluesette."
4. August 19, 1985: Toots performs "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" and then chats too briefly with Dave.
[August 27, 1992: Toots sat in with the band throughout the show, but there were no full performances on-air, so it's not included here.]

Great video footage of my favorite Harmonica player Toots Thielemans! His playing influenced me to take up the Chromatic Harmonica! My Dad-Ralph Frederico Jr. also a musician and original member of "The Virtues" 1959 Gold record song "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" met Toots many years ago in Philadelphia, PA. I never got the opportunity to meet Toots. So sad he is gone but will never be forgotten. A true legacy. As Quincy Jones said of Toots "His (Toots) playing is somewhere between a tear and a smile" "R.I.P. Toots and Dad".

Toots is a treasure I met him almost 20 years ago at the Catalina Bar and Grill were he not only sounded great he was a very sweet person and a great sense of humor and on a side note I went to Steve Kahn’s website dropped him a thank you note and within 24 hours he responded back with the kindest note. Not only great musicians But even better people. God bless you Both.

I saw him live in SanDiego knew ive never get to see him again he was 87,Im so bleesed i got to see him before he passed.Was a restaurant so i was like 10 feeet away from him RIP

When I hear Toots I always get chicken skin. I regret not going to a concert of him which was about 45 minutes from my hometown. Later he passed away. There’s no one who can copy them. He was unique like we all are of our own. Fortunately we are blessed with our Hermine Deurloo from the Netherlands. She made an album named “Riverbeast” and I was there during her short Riverbeast tour with the Big Apple band which the famous American Steve Gadd played drums on the album and during the tour. It was magical.

..thanks for this upload, Don ! ..especially for including the "jam session" of the band, from 21:12 - 23:13 ! (..I'm guessing that was Steve Khan on guitar....I saw a face around 10:02, and it looked like Steve...) ..I first became familiar with Toots through his haunting performance of the 'Midnight Cowboy' theme, then through his haunting performance of 'Nice To Be Around' from 'Cinderella Liberty' (featuring Marsha Mason and James Caan)... ..and, I know I've heard 'Bluesette' before....but I'm not sure when/where/nor how (..movie..? ..television..? radio..?) ..plus, I never knew the title of that song until I saw your upload.. ..I was in a 'jazzy' mood tonight, and you came through ! ..Thanks again, Don ! 😎

Toots was so modest, he did not like talking about himself, this made it difficult to interview him. He worked on THE 1972 FILM THE GETAWAY WITH COMPOSER QUINCY JONES, AND CARY GRANT'S LAST FILM WALK DON'T RUN WHICH THE MUSIC WAS WRITTEN BY THE GREAT QUINCY JONES.

No homage is enough for Toots. Maybe for how he was as a person. Apparently warm, happy and humble. A great person and friend musicians say. But as a musician and about his virtuosity, never enough. His secret is his knowledge of harmony. And the chromatic harmonica is a single note kind of instrument. Maybe from his guitar skills. One story by the humble Toots is that he met Louis Armstrong ( omigod ) near Bird's place and calledbthe young Toots as the bop guy.
