He is 90 here sitting in a wheelchair. He lived to be 94 and is being celebrated now at the 100th anniversary of his birth in Belgium. A long and very successful career. This would have been a night - in 1949 he joined a jam session in Paris with Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach and others! Can you imagine? In 1969, John Barry wrote this theme for the film Midnight Cowboy and of course it was Toots who first played it on the soundtrack. Those lips could whistle wonderfully and he also learned guitar inspired by fellow Belgian Django Reinhardt. Toots was unique in his artistry and will always be remembered for his joy in making music.

I beg to differ! Listen very carefulkly to the soundtract, JOHN BERRY does it again on a you tube almost exactly the same! its spell binding! i think it was his arrangement that was recordered in the movie. but toots did a good job, all be it more improvisingly.
@brucekuehn4031 Жыл бұрын
@@anetajohnson8446 John Barry wrote the plaintive theme, but it’s “Toots” who plays that harmonica. Although finding the names of soloists on film scores can be difficult, reliable web sources give it to him. Strangely, another guy plays harmonica on the soundtrack album. Actual music in a film can be different from the records which were often recorded separately.
@ralphmillais5237 Жыл бұрын
@@brucekuehn4031 Crazy musician union rules here in the UK at that time probably meant that when it came to recording the soundtrack, they had to use a domestically available player. The MU disallowed the use of foreign players, and it was the main reason a lot of the best American Jazz players seldom if ever came to the UK clubs. I believe Tommy Reilly played on the album.

I’m embarrassed and sad that as a harmonica player for 50 + yrs I never knew the music of Toots. I have been stuck on blues harps ( diatonic) and missed out learning chromatic. Now with Stage 4 lung cancer at the age of 67 , I’m listening learning & loving him. At least I’m still here 5 yrs after diagnosed to try to play . I’ll I want to do is meet other musicians and play. Lord hear my prayers, thanks Toots, REST IN SLEEP.

I used to hear my departed mother whistle this tune in the 70s. I didn't know the name of the tune and now more than 40 years later I'm discovering the name. The pianist here is just beautiful on the keys. The chords he uses are divine. Hein van de Geyn on bass is excellent. The drummer is just keeping things together.
